DJ_BK Posted July 11, 2005 Posted July 11, 2005 (edited) Hi all of you, i´m new to the community. My name is Filipe, i´m 19yo and i´m from Portugal. I´ve just uploaded via FTP my website, but the server is running very slow... i have 2Mbit connection, and i download files at +/-210Kb/s i ulpoaded a file to test the bandwidth and i downloaded it at 30Kb/s That´s not normal is it?... My server is nº 74. The site is opening slowly compared to where i had it hosted previously (www.djbk2.no.sapo.pt). by the way: how do i get the password to gain access to the "costumers only" area? i apreciate some help. Sorry for some english errors. Thanks! Edited July 12, 2005 by DJ_BK Quote
TCH-Don Posted July 12, 2005 Posted July 12, 2005 Welcome to the forum Filipe it may be a routing problem between you and the server. But you can open a help ticket (link at top of page) to ask if there is a problem. moving to the CPanel and Site Maintenance forum for forum organization. Quote
TCH-Don Posted July 12, 2005 Posted July 12, 2005 You can send a PM to a staff member (in red) for the password to the family forum. They will need your domain name and account name. Quote
TCH-Rob Posted July 12, 2005 Posted July 12, 2005 Filipe, Let me try and explain routing a little further as some people do not completely understand how it works. As I understand it, where you were hosting was in Portugal where you are. Now your server is in the United States. The trip you have to take from your computer has become a bit farther. Just like a trip you take on a road, this trip passes through some traffic intersections. At these intersections are routers that direct traffic like a traffic policeman. If we take this example, you will have to pass more traffic policemen on a trip from Portugal to the United States than you would just going around the corner in your own town. When you get to each of these policemen, they will ask where you are going and provide you with the best possible route to your destination. This means that the farther you go the more stops you have to make. Add to this the number of other cars on the road and even the condition of the road, is it well kept and does it have more lanes, and you can see that things can slow down from time to time. More traffic means that you have to wait longer to get to the policeman and poor road conditions mean you cannot drive as fast as a smooth road even though you have a fast car. Let us not forget that if there was an accident on the road ahead that it may be closed and you have to take a longer route. Add all of these together and your trip can seem to come to a standstill. While running a trace-route can assist you in finding where the slowdown might be, often the only thing one can do is wait it out as it will eventually improve. Hopefully, I have not complicated things more and I would like to welcome you to the forums. Quote
DJ_BK Posted July 12, 2005 Author Posted July 12, 2005 I understand that, by the way, i´m studying Cumputer Engeneering and i´ve learned how the Networks work. But, if that was a general problem, your other sites that you host will be slow as mine, but only mine has that problem... for example, a friend of mine just downloaded the test file at 7.2Kb/s (he has 2Mbit connection). I´m defenetly unhappy with this... Because i have downloaded thousands os files, and browser through international websites and its very fast and i download at the maximum speed of my connection. Try downloading this file and tell me if you can use the total capacity of your connection. LINK in normal conditions i would download it at 210Kb/s average, i just downloaded it at 11Kb/s average... Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted July 12, 2005 Posted July 12, 2005 I just tried downloading that file and the speed was between 122-211 kb/sec. Quote
rlambdon Posted July 12, 2005 Posted July 12, 2005 I just downloaded that file at over 500KB/s - Maxing out my 5 Mbit connection. Quote
DJ_BK Posted July 12, 2005 Author Posted July 12, 2005 It sure is because of the routing course... To Portugal it is very slow, it´s not rentable for me to have my site hosted in the US... Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted July 12, 2005 Posted July 12, 2005 I´m in Sweden, Filipe. So the way it takes from Portugal to the US vs Sweden shouldn´t matter much as I understand. However, TCH have a server in the UK too so perhaps a ticket to the helpdesk asking them if the UK server would make a difference will help. Quote
DJ_BK Posted July 12, 2005 Author Posted July 12, 2005 i believe that could be a solution! Thanks, i´ll submit a ticket asking that Quote
TCH-Don Posted July 12, 2005 Posted July 12, 2005 Good Idea Thomas! Filipe, I hope that will help. Too late now, but I downloaded the fila at 280k which is my top speed for a 2 meg connection. Quote
TCH-Rob Posted July 12, 2005 Posted July 12, 2005 Filipe, I was not questioning your knowledge in any way. I do know that there are some people out there that may be reading and wonder what a routing issue actually is. Please do not think that I was implying that you did not know what it meant. Quote

I hope the transfer to UK server results in satisfaction for me! I´ll be a proud member of this community Quote
DJ_BK Posted July 13, 2005 Author Posted July 13, 2005 PROBLEM SOLVED!! now i´m happy UK is just up ahead here from Portugal, its very fast now! Thank you all for the help and support! by the way, the website is still being developed, i´m working on it right now, but if you want you may take a look: Quote
DJ_BK Posted July 13, 2005 Author Posted July 13, 2005 avoiding opening another thread: Do you install phpbb mods or do i have install them by myself?... It would be great if your could install them for me Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted July 14, 2005 Posted July 14, 2005 You need to install them yourself. But you can ask questions in the scripting forum if you need help. Quote
