Hi,

I'm just learning the back-end of web publishing and lots of things are a mystery to me, so I'd appreciate your guidance.

I'm about to upload my first web page. I use frontpage and was considering publishing from there. Then I saw this warning in cpanel:

FrontPage Extensions

Warning: It is recommended that you DO NOT install FrontPage Extensions on your account unless you intend to publish your site directly from the FrontPage application.

Uninstalling the extensions from the main domain will uninstall the extensions from all subdomains and addon domains. Uninstalling will also remove all .htaccess files in your web root (public_html). You must have the extensions installed on the main domain before they can be installed on any subdomains or addon domains.

Installing or uninstalling FrontPage Extensions will result in the loss of all .htaccess files in your web area. Any directories you have protected with WebProtect will become unprotected until you reprotect them.

1. Do I need to be concerned about that?

2. If I once publish via Frontpage, does that mean I can't upload via an FTP account?

3. Are there any situations where you wouldn't want to (or couldn't) publish from FrontPage?

4. What's the best way to deal with file uploading in general?

By the way, FP extensions are already installed in my cpanel. Thanks for your suggestions.

Best Regards,

Michael M.

No - the warning is just advising that you should not install FrontPage Extensions unless you intend to use them (which you are).

No - you can publish from FrontPage and upload via FTP however you see fit.

3. Are there any situations where you wouldn't want to (or couldn't) publish from FrontPage?

I'm not sure about this one, as I don't use FrontPage to publish my site. One thing that comes to mind is that you may have some files that you need to upload to the server, but aren't a part of any page you've built with FrontPage. I imagine you'd need to FTP files like that to the server.

4. What's the best way to deal with file uploading in general?

I use FTP to upload my files, but that certainly not the only way. Whatever works best for you is probably the best way. :)

Hi David,

Thanks for your help. That's good to know. The warning sounded a bit ominous but your answer puts that to rest. I appreciate your fast reply.
