Does anyone have any experience with BeOS? I remember a few years ago looking at it as an alternative to Windows 98... then I got XP. I still prefer UNIX/Linux over Windows, but I do have 2 machines (my laptop and our old desktop) at home that still run Windows. Either way... anyone that's ever used BeOS, what are your thoughts?

I remember trying it years ago

it did not detect all my hardware, but that was then.

Linux has progressed so much farther.

The ones I have tried work great.

Yes, I'm a huge Linux fan as well. However, I do have a Pentium MMX 200MHz box, and aparently that's where BeOS shines. Maybe I should just go out and find a copy to try myself.

Be was acquired by Palm back in 2001, if I recall correctly, likely in order for Palm to incorporate some of the BeOS technology into future handhelds.

I ran BeOS 4.5 on a system for awhile back when Be was around and it was a nice OS for older systems. There is an open-source OS called Haiku that has been in development as an open-source version of BeOS (but I don't really know it's status).

I'm not sure if BeOS is still available anywhere, but you could try BeBits.

There is also Zeta. I've checked out SkyOS before (never used it just was surfing around on the webpage) and thought it looked pretty neat. I don't wish to pay to become a beta tester though.
