Patricia Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 Hi everyone, this is my first post here. i've browsed around a bit and i think this has a great family feel to it. keep up the great job! i've recently picked up a year contract with TCH and i couldn't be happier. I have searched high and low for a well thought out chat script that has many features but doesn't give the server load as some do (flash chat for example, it is outstanding, cheap (script) but requires alot of resources of which cannot be met via shared hosting, and the bandwidth requirements are unbelievable ie: 1758Kbytes/hour per user) i was wondering if anyone has any suggestions other then phpmychat in which it has lots of options but isn't as server heavy as say irc chats, and high end ones like Flash chat? thanks! j2k4b Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 I used a program called myichat. I don't think they are in business anymore but it was a small program and didn't use alot of bandwidth. You have to becareful with chat programs. You can easily go bandwidth crazy. I hope this helps. Quote

Patricia Posted April 26, 2005 Author Posted April 26, 2005 (edited) Well for anyone interested still about chat programs i think i've found the best one out there that uses the smallest amount of resources.. it's called voodoo chat. http://www.vochat.com for instance, "616 simultaneous users online (with new C++ voc-daemon, which was eating 1-3% of Pentium 4 2.4GHz and 18Mbytes of memory for that number of visitors)" is this considered fair use? as well as the bandwidth, per month for even that amount of users is well below my alloted monthly limit.. A question though. the daemon in which allows it to be faster, and use less resources, needs to be "turned on" and or compiled via root, which i do not have, is it possible to open a ticket and request this? To use C++ version, you have to compile it first. Go to the data/daemon directory and run command make If everything is ok, in several seconds you'll get the executable file called 'daemon'. Note: you have to use GNU version of make utility. On some systems (i.e. on FreeBSD) you have to type 'gmake' instead of 'make'. Just run it with ./daemon You can also use 'daemon_admin.pl' script to start/stop daemon, but don't forget to change the line which starts the daemon. By default 'make' compiles daemon only with Files-engine support. But it also accept parameters: MYSQL=1 -- compile daemon with MySQL-engine support SHM=1 -- with SysV Shared Memory-engine support MOD_VOC=1 -- with mod_voc support For example, if you need the daemon with MySQL engine and mod_voc support, run make MYSQL=1 MOD_VOC=1 Sorry if i'm nagging or if this is against the rules here at TCH i'm new to this kind of thing. . i'm just very interested in this chat room Patricia Quote

You'd have to submit a ticket to the Help Desk and ask them if they would be willing to do this for you (no guarantee that they will). Quote

Patricia Posted April 28, 2005 Author Posted April 28, 2005 (edited) Hi Don, i tried it but i don't think i gave it a fair chance.. but i do want to say that i opened up a ticket, and i was helped by two very helpful staff here at TCH. although they weren't able to help me, they certainly tried, and that means so much more to me then just a simple no. i really believe that they at least checked it out for me to understand my situation. and that is what i think exemplifies great customer service.. thanks a bunch! now to find me a chat script i will take a peak at phpmychat again as well Edited April 28, 2005 by Patricia Quote
