mike Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 Hey gang! I believe it is illegal to load my xp home, that's installed on my pc, onto my laptop. At least that's how it looks in the EULA . Am I correct? What if my current pc blew up or something and I just built another? Sounds like I am unable, legally, to reinstall my xp on THAT pc either. Quote
Guest helpbytes Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 (edited) I believe it is illegal to load my xp home, that's installed on my pc, onto my laptop. It is illegal yes, the license is for one computer only. It will fail at activation because you're already using the installation key. What if my current pc blew up or something and I just built another? Sounds like I am unable, legally, to reinstall my xp on THAT pc either. If that PC is no longer, it is legal to install your copy onto the new PC, however, it will fail, because the key has already been used, and it's not the same computer (the hardware profile is totally different). You will therefore need to opt for the phone authorization, and tell them, that although none of their business, you bought a new PC. When I added new hardware, cd writer and more ram, i had to reactivate, it said i'd made many changes and it needed toupdate this. Edit: If a certain period (120 days according to a site) goes and you dont re-activate XP, the key may be used again? The above assumes its not an OEM copy, in which case its bound to the hardware you purchased it with. I've had one Windows 98 copy on 3 computers, but only on one at any one time, as i have gone through 3 computers, but Win98 didn't need the activation rubbish. Edited April 6, 2005 by helpbytes Quote
