TCH-Thomas Posted December 31, 2004 Posted December 31, 2004 I connected a mp3 player (Jens of sweden) to my computer today via usb. Nothing happened. It did not show up in explorer. In control panel I found something named removable devices (or something, dont know what you call it in english) where it was present, but no new drive in explorer. When I insert the player in the usb port, shouldn´t my computer detect it automatically? Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted December 31, 2004 Posted December 31, 2004 (edited) If it found a removable device it is detecting it. Can you open the removable device and see folders? Sorry Thomas, I just reread this. Did it come with drivers? Have you installed them? My wife has one and it pops up with the New Hardware Found dialog and wants to install drivers. TCH-Thomas Posted December 31, 2004 Author Posted December 31, 2004 Can you open the removable device and see folders? In that place in control panel, yes. But the mp3 player has never been used so it was blank. The big problem is that it is not showing up in explorer so I can not transfer music to it. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted December 31, 2004 Posted December 31, 2004 I was editing my answer when you posted your reply. Did the device come with drivers? Did you install them? Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted December 31, 2004 Author Posted December 31, 2004 (edited) Nope. It is supposed to work out of the box in xp. One more problem is too that it is a friends mp3 player and not mine (so I feel a little anxious messing with it). She got it as a christmas present but doesnt have a computer, so who have to help her? Me. I do though have exact same problem with a usb-pen or what you call it, so I am pretty confident it is nothing wrong with her player, it must be something in my computer not working as it should. TCH-Bruce Posted December 31, 2004 Posted December 31, 2004 Sounds like it's not auto detecting when you plug in USB devices. Quote
youneverknow Posted December 31, 2004 Posted December 31, 2004 Do you have another USB port that you can try? My system has 3 and only the two on the back of the system work and not the convienet one up front. Could you try that? youneverknow Quote
Madmanmcp Posted December 31, 2004 Posted December 31, 2004 Thomas, go into Control Panel | System and click on the Hardware tab, click on Device manager and scroll down the list till you find the USB controllers. Is there one listed for USB 2.0 Enhanced or USB 1.1? You will need USB 2.0. Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted December 31, 2004 Author Posted December 31, 2004 I had a look in both mine and Jessicas computer and it doesn´t tell if its 1.1 or 2.0. Is there any other way I can figure this out? If it happens to be that I only have 1.1, can I somehow replace those usb ports with what I need. Im asking since I plan to buy a mp3 player myself. Madmanmcp Posted December 31, 2004 Posted December 31, 2004 Yes you can purchase USB 2.0 PCI cards. Let me look around and see where it will say if you have 1.1 or 2.0. Quote
Madmanmcp Posted December 31, 2004 Posted December 31, 2004 Try downloading and running this, it will at least tell you if the USB drivers are correct. h_tp://www.download.com/USB-Evaluation-Utility/3000-2110_4-4616192.html Quote

Madmanmcp Posted December 31, 2004 Posted December 31, 2004 Ok, I was hoping it would show us something about 1.1 or 2.0. Have you gone to the web site for the MP3 player and checked for a forum or support that may help? Quote
Madmanmcp Posted December 31, 2004 Posted December 31, 2004 Try the suggestions here: h_tp://www.answerbag.com/q_view.php/3962 Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted December 31, 2004 Author Posted December 31, 2004 Ok, I checked that page and it looks like I will have to check in bios. Unfortunately it doesnt look like the chance of having 2.0 is big since it was released 2002 and I think my computer is a little older than that. I´ll check bios on next startup. Thanks again Bob Quote
Madmanmcp Posted December 31, 2004 Posted December 31, 2004 You're welcome Thomas. You can pick up a card cheap. Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted January 1, 2005 Author Posted January 1, 2005 I have checked this now and I have 1.1 while Jessica have 2.0. Now the problem is that even that she have 2.0 it does not work. Quote
