I don't know if anyone else saw this, but it was mentioned on Slashdot with a better description pointing to a notice at Netcraft

Basically ICANN is changing the policy on domain transfers effective on Friday Nov. 12th, where any transfer request that hasn't been responded to withing a 5 day period is automatically approved. The best advice given is that you make sure that your contact information for your domain is updated and, if available, your domain is locked.

...and, if available, your domain is locked.

What popular/recommended registrars provide this service?

Log into your domain registar site (where you bought it)

and you will see an option to lock the domain, if it is supported by your registar.

Now no one can transfer it until you unlock it.
