laburke Posted November 8, 2004 Posted November 8, 2004 I have Advanced Guestbook installed on my site, Burke Design. Right now the only way to access it is with the above link, as I have rerouted my index page guestbook link to a temporary "I'm sorry" page because of the problems. Over the past few weeks, I have been getting several entries a week from people usually with hotmail addresses, just short snippets that don't even always make sense, and it's obvious these aren't just normal entries from people who visit my site. Somebody's up to something. Now, as you can see, it's really messed up and I don't know how to fix it. I have tried to delete the offending entries but can't. I have put as many IP addresses as I can into my ban list, but that doesn't seem to be very effective. Do you have any idea what I can do to regain control of my guestbook? Thanks! Quote
MikeJ Posted November 8, 2004 Posted November 8, 2004 Advanced Guestbook 2.2 That version of the guestbook is easily hacked. You should basically backup your database, delete *ALL* of your guestbook templates, and upgrade to the newer version available in cPanel. If your entries are too far gone, you may want to consider starting with a fresh install of Guestbook. But by all means, upgrade or remove version 2.2 because they can do much more than just deface your guestbook. Quote
laburke Posted November 10, 2004 Author Posted November 10, 2004 Thank you, Mike, for answering. I will do as you suggest. I may be back with more questions, though - fair warning! Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted November 10, 2004 Posted November 10, 2004 See also this thread with some good info about this. Quote
MikeJ Posted November 10, 2004 Posted November 10, 2004 Just keep in mind that you can upgrade now through cPanel (addon scripts) so you don't have to use the method I posted in that thread to upgrade, but the other info is still accurate. Quote
laburke Posted November 14, 2004 Author Posted November 14, 2004 Thank you guys for your suggestions. I have upgraded but I still can't figure out how to get my old entries into the new guestbook. I backed up my database, installed Advanced Guestbook 2.3.1, and then went back to upload the database. It expands a file named agbook1 but I don't know how to get that back into my guestbook, sans the offending entries. I am too dense, and I don't understand the instructions in the thread Thomas referred to. If you're not too sick of this topic, could someone give me a tip? Thanks for your patience! Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted November 14, 2004 Posted November 14, 2004 (edited) I am not the best with databases, but I think the old and new db have to have same name. But I can be wrong or there might be a way to import it, so wait to someone else answers. But Im happy you made it this far. Edited November 14, 2004 by TCH-Thomas Quote
TCH-Don Posted November 14, 2004 Posted November 14, 2004 New guestbook? Did you use the upgrade link in cpanel as Mike said? or install another guestbook? If you upgraded, your data should be there. Quote
laburke Posted November 14, 2004 Author Posted November 14, 2004 I upgraded with the cPanel link, but I had named it /advancedguestbook this time instead of /guestbook like last time. So I removed the new and went back and tried to upgrade again, this time using the same name, but it keeps telling me I need to specify the directory and I can't see a place to do that. The place to the left of the box that says "upgrade to 2.3.1" is a dropdown box with nothing in it. Sorry to be such a pain. Quote
TCH-Don Posted November 15, 2004 Posted November 15, 2004 If there is nothing in the upgrade drop down then your cpanel does not know about your existing guestbook. That was my case too as I installed my own the first time. You could just create a new one just to get one working now, and try to add the old enties later. How many entries were in the old one? Quote
laburke Posted November 15, 2004 Author Posted November 15, 2004 Well, the first time I upgraded (using new name of advancedguestbook, which I guess was my mistake) there was something in the dropdown box. Now that I'm trying again, there isn't. There were only 3 or 4 entries I would need to keep. So obviously, this is not a terrible tragedy if I lose them. I would like to save them, but I won't ask anyone to go to great lengths for them! Thanks for your help. Quote
laburke Posted November 16, 2004 Author Posted November 16, 2004 Well, I haven't been able to accomplish this despite Don's valiant efforts to give me step-by-step instructions. (Thanks so much, Don, for giving of your time!) I may open a ticket just to give it one more shot, but then I'll let it go. Thanks, TCH, for being so willing to help greenhorns! Rock Sign Quote
