quinbus Posted November 1, 2004 Posted November 1, 2004 I'm currently experiencing problems remotely checking TCH domain e-mail via my desktop e-mail program (Outlook). I keeping getting errors that mail.crystalcleanwindows.com isn't reachable. This has always been a sort of kludgey thing--sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Lately it's more often not working. Has something changed? McDjr Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted November 1, 2004 Posted November 1, 2004 (edited) The only problem I have heard of before is is that some isp´s are closing the port (25 I believe) for sending email. If you have problems receiving (as in connecting to webmail or downloading via pop), it might be a routing issue with your isp. You can submit a ticket to the techs to have them check so everything works from TCH end. Also moving for organization. Edited November 1, 2004 by TCH-Thomas Quote
Virtual Imager Posted November 1, 2004 Posted November 1, 2004 So what do we do if they've closed port 25? I can't send email through my domain, only through my isp.... Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted November 1, 2004 Posted November 1, 2004 For sending: you can either try port 25 or port 26 might work too I believe. Or I think you will have to use your isp. I have this problem myself and I have only the isp-option to use. For receiving, I simply never heard of a problem with that, so I can´t help much with that. Except that if does work sometimes and sometimes not, it sounds like more of a problem with the isp than TCH to me. Quote

If 26 is also blocked you can either use web mail or your current ISP for outgoing. I personally use my ISP for outgoing with the return being my domain account. Simple to set up in an email client. You can run a trace route by opening an MS-Dos promt and then enter the following: tracert www.yourdomain.ext Quote

I do too, but my isp won't let me send files larger than 1 meg so I'd like to send through my own domain. I'll try port 26. Do you think lengthening the timeout perios will enable me to send larger files through my isp? I haven't tried that. Quote
Madmanmcp Posted November 1, 2004 Posted November 1, 2004 So what do we do if they've closed port 25? I can't send email through my domain, only through my isp.... Ok, lets see if I can explain what Thomas has mentioned. ISP's in an attempt to cut back on spam have been "closing" port 25 from being used as a "relay" for email. That means it checks the email and if it does not originate from the ISP it will not work. We'll use me as an example. I basically use 2 ISP's, I have had Prodigy since 1989 and have had my same email there since then and would like to keep it. Prodigy is now SBC/Yahoo and is a dialup service (slow) and I decided to get a faster service and since SBC could not supply me with faster service I oppted for a Cable connection which I am connected to all the time. Now I had to setup my email to receive from pop.prodigy.net and then send from smtp.cablecompany.net. The sending part is where I am affected, I cannot send from Prodigy because my internet connection says something other than Prodigy and they have port 25 blocked. How this affects you depends on your ISP and if you are doing what a few of us are doing by using multiple ISP's and crosing our email. Quote

If I need to send files larger than a megabyte I upload it to my webspace and send the recipient a link to download the file. It's much more efficient since I don't know if the person has a fast connection or dialup or whether or not they can receive large attachments. Quote
