What exactly does the counter script provided count? Is it counting the bot hits from search engines? I'm trying to determine if there is any useful information to be gained by the counter.

Thanks,

Lou

I think it counts anything, unique visitors, bots, page reloads etc...

If speaking about the counter provided by cpanel that is.

Hi Lou,

Yes, I agree with Thomas on that - don't know about the one provided in cPanel, but some of them even count every single "hit" on the site (individual page elements, images that have been viewed etc). That's how you end up seeing what looks to be impossibly high visitor numbers on some sites that you visit (x zillion visitors since last month etc).

Much better to use one of the stats programs also included in cPanel (AWStats, Webalizer etc) as they provide you with a full breakdown of the figures and let you see what's really happening on your site.

Hope that helps :P

Thanks, I do use the awstats, but I was wondering what the value of the counter (provided in c-panel) would be. If it counts bots etc. it isn't that useful to me.

Thank you for the replies.

The cPanel counter counts how many times that script has been run. So depending on what page you add the script to will tell you how many times that page has been accessed. If someone refreshes the page the hit counter will be incremented.

Does that help explain it. Counters are so yesterday. Use the stats provided from Awstats for mor accurate information.
