HI, all,

Okay, okay, i know no one still uses netscape/mozilla except me. but i built my site in netscape composer years ago, and i don't have frontpage.

my problem: despite tons of TCH tech help, i still can't successfully publish a page in my new subdirectory. the settings i was given are correctly entered, but i get a "553 error: can't find that file or diretory" -- and this is just for the index.html homepage. i still have to build and upload 7 other linked pages.

yet somehow, when i type in the subdomain URL, i get a page that says HTTP:DOCS wth a list of the files i've managed to upload in the past (somehow i can no longer update or upload anything).

(if you're confused...think how i feel <g>)

seriously, folks, can anyone offer me a way to correct all this in Netscape Composer?

Many, many thanks,

joan

Hi Joan, I don't work with any fancy HTML editors that upload your content for you. But I can offer an alternative.

Can you publish to a folder on you computer? If so, you could use the file manager in cPanel to upload your pages. Or the better way to do it would be to use an FTP client to upload your content.

Maybe someone with Netscape Composer experience will come along with a solution for you.

Moving for orgnaization.

I built my site with Netscape Composer also. The newer versions seem to give me more problems than the old 4.0 or whatever I used years ago! Often, I use ftp to upload. I don't have a subdomain, so I'm not sure what the problem might be, but here are a few things to check:

When you hit the publish button, make sure that you check all the settings on both tabs. On the Publish tab, you'll probably have to set up a new site with a new name for the subdomain and make sure that new site is selected from the drop down menu. Then make sure on the Settings tab that the settings correspond to the new site. It may be that you changed the settings for the new site, but have the old site selected on the Publish tab. Just a guess.

Hi Joan :)

For others using mozilla, I can only publish to a folder if I create it first with cpanel > filemanager

or easier an ftp program

then add the folder name to the publish Site Subdirectory name

If you are using a subdomain, you still publish to the domain/folder

Joan, if you want to double check your settings this is what I use

Thanks for all the input! Alas, it's not the settings...I think I need to use cPanel or get cute.ftp or something.

is there a newbie-level step-by-step tutorial that would explain all this to me? the mozilla link is helpful, but the more i learn, the more my head swims...it would be great to have the instructions written down in one place.

giant thanks to all,

joan

Also Core FTP Lite is free and easy to use.

screen shot of setup for it.

You will find an ftp program easier to use than cpanels file manager.

with two side by side windows,

you can navagate to a folder on your site

and your computer folder in the other window,

select the files and drag them and drop in the window on your site.
