borfast Posted September 19, 2004 Posted September 19, 2004 Since this is something that affects lots of people, I thought I'd post it here. http://slashdot.org/ http://www.pcwelt.de/know-how/extras/103039/ Quote
Madmanmcp Posted September 19, 2004 Posted September 19, 2004 This is not new...file and print sharing has always been a security issue! Turn it on at your own risk. Now you can print anything you want on my printers, but I will charge a huge price if you want to collect the documents Quote
borfast Posted September 19, 2004 Author Posted September 19, 2004 Now there's a good idea! Open up your printer for the whole neighborhood and let them know about it. They can print stuff on your printer and pick it up later for a fee Anyway, about the file and printer sharing, I know it has always been a serious security issue but this is a bit worse, because even if you had your windows secured before, if you install SP2 (on top of SP1) your machine will be open wide, waiting for connections. Madmanmcp Posted September 19, 2004 Posted September 19, 2004 if you install SP2 (on top of SP1) your machine will be open wide, waiting for connections. In some cases maybe but I don't believe it would be a large number. For those folks who are on a router that uses natting, they are safe for instance. A good spot to learn about this is at grc.com and you can start reading here: h_tp://www.grc.com/su-explain.htm Quote
oompahloompah Posted October 11, 2004 Posted October 11, 2004 To be honest, even if you're not behind a router, file and printer sharing does not pose any vulnerabilities if you've not explicitly set any shares. One could share a text file with an ASCII graphics of the finger shown. Quote
