I frequently get timeout errors when attempting to check my mail:

"Task 'XXX@chessassistance.com - Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x8004210A) : 'The operation timed out waiting for a response from the receiving (POP) server. " etc. I'm using outlook 2002. Although I've had the problem occur with TheBat! as well.

90% of the time when this happens, I've received an e-mail with an attachment. I've set the server timeout for about 5 minutes. AFAIK, it happens with every account in my domain. 10% of the time, none of the e-mails on the server have attachments, and I still have the problem. Once I delete the message(s) from the server (using webmail), everything is ok.

Also, many times, I am not able to send e-mail with attachments either. And yes, I checked the list of attachment extensions that were not allowed. This happens about 80% of the time. Same thing happens, timeout error, and there is no network traffic.

Is there any way to fix this? In the past, it has been suggested that I (a) get a new e-mail client and (:P use webmail. Neither of these solutions is palatable for me.

One factoid: I access the net through a dial-up/analog router.

About the dial-up/analog router,

is the modem a WinModem?

I read the Routers will NOT work with WinModems

Can you try by passing the router.

If it is a WinModem, have you tried an external modem?

When I used an external usb modem, all my connection problems went away.

just some thoughts.
