JDanniel Posted April 8, 2004 Posted April 8, 2004 Hello. I'm interested in subscribing to a web hosting plan where I can house my tutorials and documentation for public consumption on a for-pay, subscription basis. I'd like to password-protect the material, and would like to know if Total Choice Hosting supports such a thing via HTTP in any way. Briefly, here's the scenario: Let's say I have 50 files, divided up into five folders. Each file would have a URL to enable downloading, i.e.: http://www.totalchoicehosting.com/jd/folder1/tutorial1.swf http://www.totalchoicehosting.com/jd/folder3/tutorial34.chm http://www.totalchoicehosting.com/jd/folder4/tutorial47.pdf In order to access these URL's, the user would have to enter a password. Does TCH support something like this, and if so, how? Are scripts required, and if so, does TCH offer them? I currently have the files password-protected via self-extracting .EXE format, but I do want the option to password-protect the URL's in the future, if I so choose. Any feedback and advice on how to do this is welcome and sincerely appreciated. Thank you for your time and assistance. J. Danniel (please feel free to call me Jd.) Quote
TCH-Rob Posted April 8, 2004 Posted April 8, 2004 Sure can. cPanel has Web Protect that will allow you to set up such things. Piece of cake JD, I will even show you how if you need me to. Quote
JDanniel Posted August 28, 2004 Author Posted August 28, 2004 I have a question about password protecting individual pages or URL's. Cpanel has a tool to password protect directories. It's easy to use, and will be perfectly adequate for what I want to do. However, just out of curiosity: Is there a way to password-protect individual web pages, or individual URL's? Does the control panel offer such a tool? If so, where is it, and is there a tutorial available for it? Or, can someone post brief instructions on how to use it? I would prefer to password-protect specific pages, rather than entire directories. If that's not possible, then it's not a big deal--I can work with directories. Thank you very much! Jd Quote
JDanniel Posted August 28, 2004 Author Posted August 28, 2004 Rob (or anyone else interested in replying), I can't believe I forgot I posted this question. I just posted the same question elsewhere. I found an option to password-protect directories. This will work quite adequately for me. However, I did not find the Web Protect tool you mentioned. Is it something different? If it still exists as part of the control panel, then can you tell me where it is, please? And is there a tutorial for it? If so, where do I find the tutorial? Or, could you please post brief instructions on how to use it, to password-protect just individual pages or URL's? Thank you very much! Jd Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted August 28, 2004 Posted August 28, 2004 (edited) In cpanel: Look for Site management > Web protect and click it Navigate to the directory that you want to protect. Select a folder by clicking on the folder name link, or open a folder by clicking on the folder icon. Click on the tick box next to the icon. Enter the name that you want to appear in the Protected Resource Name field. This is optional and purely for the user's benefit. Click on the Save button. Generally, you now need to add at least one authorized user to enable access to the directory. Refer to Adding an authorized user for more information. Enter the user's name in the Username field, and their password in the Password field. Click on the Add New User button. Edited August 28, 2004 by Jikrantz Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted August 28, 2004 Posted August 28, 2004 cPanel does not provide a method to protect anything but a folder. If you want to protect an individual page you can either create a separate folder that you can protect and put it there. You can check www.hotscritps.com and possibly find a script that would work for you. Quote
JDanniel Posted August 28, 2004 Author Posted August 28, 2004 Look for Site management > Web protect and click it I'll be darned if I can find anything specifically designated as Site Management. I see several rows of icons, and in the second row, I see an icon named Password Protect Directories. Is this the same thing as Web Protect? Bruce, why did Rob say it is possible to protect individual URL's? Was he mistaken? Jd Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted August 28, 2004 Posted August 28, 2004 Is this the same thing as Web Protect? Yup Some accounts have different themes so where these icons are located may vary. So my answer was for the theme I thought you had. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted August 28, 2004 Posted August 28, 2004 (edited) Bruce, why did Rob say it is possible to protect individual URL's? Was he mistaken? I have never been able to protect a single page without putting it into it's own sub folder and protecting the folder. I'm sure Rob can enlighten us of how to do it differently if it is doable. OK, I went and did a Google search and I guess it is possible to only allow access to certain files to specific users by modifying the .htaccess file. This page gives a brief tutorial on how to do it. http://www.ischool.utexas.edu/technology/tutorials/webdev/passProtect/proIndivi.html Edited August 28, 2004 by TCH-Bruce Quote
JDanniel Posted August 28, 2004 Author Posted August 28, 2004 I think password protecting a directory will suffice for me, for now. Bruce, thanks for the URL. I will not be able to study it in depth or test it for a day or two, but I'm glad there's an option to try. I'll let you know if it works, or how well. Thanks again, everyone. Jd Quote
