skousen Posted August 6, 2004 Posted August 6, 2004 I want to be able to have one entire web site password protected (so that only people with the password can get into the website from the very beginning - or at the very least, can not go beyond the main page). Is there a way to do that? I've tried the cpanel's password protect, but it isn't blocking anything. Anyone have suggestions as to how to set up a password-protected site? Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted August 6, 2004 Posted August 6, 2004 (edited) Welcome to the family, skousen What I would do is create a single folder to load all the web content into and use cPanel's Web Protect feature on that folder. Then you can create an index.html page in your "public_html" folder that contains a link to access the web protected area. When you access the folder www.******/newfolder/ it will open a login box. You can add the login/password combinations using the web protect feature. Someone else may have a different way of doing it. Edited August 6, 2004 by TCH-Bruce Quote
TCH-Don Posted August 6, 2004 Posted August 6, 2004 After you went to cpanel > Password protect directories > select folder, click on the tick box next to the lock icon. add a user and a password did you exit the browser and restart the browser to clear the cache. If so what do you see when you try to visit the folder? Quote
TCH-Don Posted August 7, 2004 Posted August 7, 2004 Oh yes, Welcome to the Family skousen and your new home! If following the directions for creating a web protected folder, (see cpanel docs link at bottom left of your cpanel) then open a hlp ticket, link at top of this page. We really are like family here. So if you need anything, just ask your new family! We love to help Quote
TCH-Rob Posted August 7, 2004 Posted August 7, 2004 Welcome to the family, I suppose that one could use an .htaccess redirect to automatically send users from the index page to the password protected folder if one wanted to as well. Quote
skousen Posted August 7, 2004 Author Posted August 7, 2004 THANKS for all the info/help. As was noticed, I am new to the TCH family - but the more salient fact is, I am new to EVERYTHING regarding building a website. It's as if I am in a different country and you are all speaking a different language. I need to try and figure out what in the world you're talking about, and then I'm sure I can figure out how to follow your directions. All I've done is put information on the cutesite builder template, link a few pages, and then hit publish. It did all the work, I did very little thinking about what folder held what. But... I will work on it, ask others, and see if they can help me understand your suggestions. Again, THANKS (I really like this TCH company)! Quote

Don't be afraid to ask questions - folks here are friendly, knowledgeable and like to share what they know with others. You'll also find some humor along the way. Glad you found us, look forward to knowing you better. I'm a CSB user, too. It'll get easier, promise! Thumbs Up Quote
