Php E-mail Imap_open

I'm researching the ability to write my own webmail in PHP (call me crazy). What kind of options do we have with this function? I was able to get pop3 working:

 

><?php
$mbox = imap_open ("{localhost:110/pop3}INBOX", "user_id", "password");
?>

 

This one doesn't seem to work:

 

><?php
$mbox = imap_open("{localhost:143}INBOX", "user_id", "password");
?>

 

Any ideas?
