Hi. I've had a TCH account for a couple of months, but I haven't gotten enough inspirations to put anything interesting on it. Anyway, I'm going on a trip for a few months so I figured I'd put a blog on my site so my family can see how I'm doing. I decided on Movable Type, but I'm stuck on one of the directions.

I'm reading the instructions from this page:

http://www.totalchoicehosting.com/help/id76.htm

The last bullet of step 3 states:

If you're putting mt into the cgi-bin, you'll need to create a directory called mt-static in the root of public_html folder. remove the # from the beginning of the StaticWebPath line and put, StaticWebPath /mt-static/

But in the first few steps it says to extract all the files in the public_html folder and rename the extracted folder to 'mt'. Is it more secure to move everything to the cgi-bin folder? If so, which files am I supposed to move? I'm not afraid of anyone hacking my site since I don't have anything important, but on the other hand, I don't wanna be a sitting duck waiting to be hacked either :) I am afraid to move beyond this step because I'm sure I will run into errors later on.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sandro

You have two options. I'll describe both and you can decide which one you want to go with.

1) Put everything *except* images, docs, styles.css and mt.js into the cgi-bin. Put the exceptions into mt-static and uncomment that StaticWebpath as described in your post.

2) Put everything in one folder wherever you want and leave it commented.

If you go with option 2 - check out These instructions for protecting your mt.cfg.

Neither one has any intrinsic advantages over the other one, as long as you make sureyou secure mt.cfg if you use option 2, they are pretty equal. =) When I ran MT I preferred option 1 as it just made more sense to me. Personal preference, really, on TCH servers. =)

Hope that helps!
