TCH-Thomas Posted July 24, 2004 Posted July 24, 2004 (edited) Is there some specific rules etc that companies like Symantec have to follow when they make software that "hides" ads on webpages? Why I ask is because Norton Internet Security took the TCH Customer Webrings logo as an ad. When I had deactivated the block ads function for the site the logo showed up. borfast Posted July 24, 2004 Posted July 24, 2004 Thomas, if the image you're talking about is the one you use in your signature, then it may be because of its proportions - it seems to have the usual proportions for an online ad. Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted July 24, 2004 Author Posted July 24, 2004 It has the same proportions same as standard banner 468x60. Only thing different than most banners is that its animated. Quote
borfast Posted July 25, 2004 Posted July 25, 2004 Thomas, that's probably the source of the problem - the dimensions. I have no idea of how Norton Internet Security works but it may have an option to ignore a certain URL, filename... something like that. Or perhaps you can change the dimensions of your logo. Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted July 25, 2004 Author Posted July 25, 2004 may have an option to ignore a certain URL, filename... something like that Yup, it does. I was only curious if anyone knew if there is some rules that companies like Symantec have to follow, so we might find out which dimensions etc it usually does hide. Quote
borfast Posted July 25, 2004 Posted July 25, 2004 (edited) Oh! Sorry, Thomas, I didn't understand your question at first. Well, as far as I know, there are no such rules. The usual dimensions are the ones you mentioned and what Symantec and others do is take those usual measures into account and program their software to take them into account, I think. Deverill Posted July 25, 2004 Posted July 25, 2004 Besides, if they told everyone what they blocked then the advertisers would only change their ads making them ineffective. Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted July 25, 2004 Author Posted July 25, 2004 But how come these ad blockers dont stop all 468x60 banners if that is a dimension they should stop, if they go by dimensions that is? Quote
DarqFlare Posted July 25, 2004 Posted July 25, 2004 It's probably got some ad recognition algorithm or something... Quote
