gabbarsingh Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 hello, i am looking for a hosting service almost entirely for the purpose of setting up a message board community. i see invision is one of the included board options with your service. my questions: 1. is this included with every plan? are there limits on board usage depending on plan? 2. is there any difference between the level of customization, control, and security over the invision module available through your plan and what might be possible if i were to install the program myself if you didn't offer it? in other words, is the version of invision available through your plans limited in any way or is it the full-featured software? 3. is each customer's invision install and backend (databases etc.) separate and unique? thanks! LisaJill Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 The one-click install is the latest free version that is available. There was something about the licensing here a few months ago and someone else may be able to give you more information about that. I'm not sure what the paid version has over the free version. But the one-click free version wouldn't be different than if you installed the free version yourself. It's available with all plans - the only limitations are, of course, the bandwidth and storage available for your account. It'd be on one of your own sql databases of which you can setup an unlimited number on any of our plans. =) The one click install simply creates the database/files etc for you - you can still ftp in and do whatever customization you please, or use the admin utility. Just as if you had installed it. As far as the licensing issues and differences someone else here may be more familiar with that. =) Quote

LisaJill Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 (edited) The way I understand it is that there *was* a free version and that is what iis installed with the one-click install. There is no longer a free version, so if you wanted to upgrade past the one on cpanel - there would be a cost involved and you would have to do the upgrade without the benefit of the one-click. phpbb on the other hand is totally free and is also offered as a one-click install; and there are, of course, many other forum packages available via hotscripts.com that may be free. =) Does that help to clarify things? Oh, as far as I know - the free one that installs has no ads, I'm not sure what is added in the latest versions either. =) Edited July 20, 2004 by TCH-Lisa Quote
gabbarsingh Posted July 20, 2004 Author Posted July 20, 2004 lisa, thanks for taking so much time. i am beginning to see some light at the end of this tunnel. what might get me there real quick: do you know what version of invision power boards is installed with the one-click option? is it the same version we're using right now? LisaJill Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 I believe it is 1.2, gab - but I'll give her a quick install and check it. The credits at the bottom of this say 1.3 final... give me a moment so I can confirm =) Quote
LisaJill Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 Okey, http://www.lisa-jill.com/forums/ is where I installed it - as you can see it's version 1.2; so that was the latest version that IPB offered free of charge. =) Quote
TCH-Don Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 You can still download the latest free version 1.3 called the trial version if you want. It comes with no support from them and must have their credits at the bottom of the page. (Powered by Invision Power Board) click the link at the bottom of this page for http://www.invisionboard.com/ on the right click on Download and Pricing On the download page you will see a link for [ Free Trial Version Information ] this will take you to a link to the page with Download Our Latest Release of IPB click on Download Invision Power Board 1.3 (Final) This will take you to a page with IPB full release downloads Invision Power Board 2.0.0 (PF 1) This is the first officially supported release of IPB 2.0.0. Invision Power Board 1.3.1 (Final) Click on the 1.3.1 link to go to yet another page IPB Public Pre-Release Downloads You have chosen to download a full IPB release 1.3.1 (Final) click on the I have read, understood and accepted this license and you can finally download the trial version There is no mention of a trial duration Phew long road to get the free trail but worth it. If you have installed a forum before this will be easy. if not unzip to your computer and click on the readme.html and folow their instructions. Quote
gabbarsingh Posted July 20, 2004 Author Posted July 20, 2004 thanks don and lisa! i'm not sure what the differences are between v1.2 and v1.3 and if there's enough there to justify the extra pain of not just going with the one-click install if i were to go with tch. just to be clear though, there's no issues with uploading 1.3 to my account if that's what i wanted to use? would there be any assistance available in the process? (i'm very much a novice when it comes to these things). Quote
LisaJill Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 there is no problem with it - and indeed, there is almost certainly (though I have NOT confirmed this) a clear and easy upgrade path if you want to use the one click install then just upgrade the files to 1.3. You should read up on the site first. But you are certainly free to install 1.3 final on your own. If you need assistance feel free to post in the scripting section and we'll do what we can. =) Quote
TCH-Don Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 There is no problem with TCH as to you installing version 1.3.1 You can always ask your family here if you get stuck. But if you have not installed a forum you may want to just try the cpanel install to see the differences with this TCH forum (1.3.1) We also have a few hints on customizing forum.here when you get ready to change the look of the forum. TomDB Posted January 3, 2005 Posted January 3, 2005 I've read this thread over here cause I searched the forum for anything about invisionfree. This thread goes about version 1.2 & 1.3 (of the free version). Now, I currently have an a 1.2 version on my domain & I wanted to change it to version 1.3 (free). Now, I tried to follow Don's tour to gain that free version, but no matter what I did, I can nowhere find a related link to version 1.3 free. There are other free versions, but they are limited though. Is there anyplace or anyone who's able of giving me that 1.3 free version, so I could use that one. It would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance Kind regards, Tom De Blieck Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted January 3, 2005 Posted January 3, 2005 (edited) Hi, First of all, Welcome to your extended family. The upgrade link to version 1.3 are supposed to be in your cpanel. Depending on which theme you are using it may be under different sections. If using moonsoon cpanel theme, its in addon scripts and in scripts library if using X and X2 themes. If its not under one of those sections, please submit a ticket to the help guys and they will figure out what happened. (Link on top of page). EDIT: Disregard my post about this. I missread my cpanel. Edited January 3, 2005 by TCH-Thomas Quote
TomDB Posted January 3, 2005 Posted January 3, 2005 Thx a lot Thomas for calling me welcome over here. I did what you said, but couldn't find anywhere a link to version 1.3 (there was a link to upgrade to version 1.2). So I've sent a ticket. Anyway, still your help was very mucht appreciated... btw: happy new year Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted January 3, 2005 Posted January 3, 2005 btw: happy new year Thanks, same to you. Quote
TCH-Dick Posted January 3, 2005 Posted January 3, 2005 Version 1.3 was never available via cpanel you had to manually upgrade from 1.2 to 1.3. IPB no longer provides a free version of their software and 1.3 is no longer available for download. Quote
TCH-Don Posted January 3, 2005 Posted January 3, 2005 Welcome to the Family Tom and your new home! Its too bad IPB decided to stop the free versions. You may want to consider changing to phpBB or another like Simple Machines forum (by Yabba board creators) We really are like family here. So if you need anything, just ask your new family! We love to help Quote
