I use e-mail filtering (in cPanel) in order to sent messages that have been marked as SPAM by Spam Assassin (SPAM header contains "yes") to my spam@**** address in order to assure that no "important" e-mails get discarded. Eventually I will discard the SPAM e-mails instead of sending them to my spam mailbox. I've enabled Spam Assassin and left Spam Box inactive.

Indeed a number of SPAM e-mails end up in my spam mailbox. However, still a number of e-mails that have been marked as SPAM end up in my default mailbox default@****! I've the suspicion that somehow the filtering doesn't work properly.

In an attempt to verify this I've changed the Spam Assassin settings to modify the subject of SPAM e-mails to begin with **spam** in order to simplify spotting the SPAM messages in my default mailbox. In addition I created an e-mail filter that sents messages to my spam mailbox if their subject starts with **spam**. Nevertheless, still a number of SPAM e-mails ends up in my default mailbox.

Furthermore, when I test these filters in cPanel no Filter Trace Results are shown! Therefore, I think the e-mail filtering isn't working properly. What can I do to resolve this issue?

How many are getting through? There isn't a way to block 100% of SPAM that I have been able to find. I get 4-10 SPAM messages a day using the same setup as you have. That's down from 30-40 a day in one account and 60-90 in another account.

I use K9 (http://keir.net/k9.html) on my desktop when popping email to catch the SPAM Spam Assassin doesn't catch.

Spam Assassin is catching about 90% of the incoming SPAM if I have to make a guess. Aparantly those Bayes filters have been getting better. ;)

However, my problem is not with SPAM e-mails that slip through SA, but with the filtering of the recognised SPAM e-mails. Those e-mails that have already been caught by SA as being SPAM are marked both with "Yes" in the SPAM headers and **spam** is added to the subject line.

I've configured e-mail filtering such that these e-mails should end up in my spam@**** mailbox. However, this only happens to a part of the SPAM e-mails, i.e. 40% ends in my spam@**** mailbox and 60% ends up in my default default@**** mailbox  So aparantly the e-mail filtering is not working properly. Thats why I tested the filters via cPanel, which is not working somehow...

Oh, sorry about that. I've verified that I indeed use begins with instead of contains, so I guess that doesn't solve the "mystery"
