gweilo8888 Posted July 13, 2004 Posted July 13, 2004 Dear TotalChoice I've had a look at your plans, and they seem fairly good value, plus you seem to have a good reputation. A few questions though, before I transfer my sites from my current web host (who've proven to have very poor technical support, and a very uncaring attitude). 1) Do you have any charge for hosting multiple domains on a single account? I currently only have a single domain, registered through GoDaddy.com, and have several sites using different subdomains under this. I'd like to have a few domains, one for each site, though. 2) Is there any charge to change which package I'm hosted under, should I decide I need a bigger (or smaller) package than what I initially choose? 3) Do you have any uptime or other satisfaction guarantees? 4) Would I be able to run the Gallery script from http://gallery.menalto.com/ on your hosting packages? Requires: Apache 1.x, 2.x or Zeus web server PHP 4 mod_rewrite NetPBM or ImageMagick 5) Would I be able to run phpBB 2.x forums? My sites currently have two separate phpBB installs, one with 2571 users and 40415 articles, and another with 1424 users and 25713 articles. I'd expect these forums to continue to grow steadily. 6) Would I be able to run the CyberScript EasyHost script from http://www.cyberscript.net/products/easyhost/ ? One of my sites is for owners of a particular make and model of automobile, and I want to be able to use this script to give each of my site members a small amount of web space to share pictures and HTML pages showing their cars, modifications, etc., without intervention on my part. Requires: # Web server allowing cgi-script execution # Perl 5.x.x # Access to a empty MySQL database # DBI perl module # DBD::mysql perl module # PureFTPd (optional, allows my site visitors to upload their files by FTP instead of through an HTML interface) That's all I can think of for now... I need to make a decision in the next day or two, so a quick answer would certainly be appreciated. Many thanks in advance for the help! Quote

I understand this may be proprietary info you're not willing to release, but thought I'd ask anyway. What is the average spec of your servers, and how many users share each server on average? Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted July 13, 2004 Posted July 13, 2004 (edited) Hi, I cant answer all but a few... 1) You would need a reseller package for that 3) No, not as in getting money back anyway 4) Yes 5) Yes (About phpbb) Edited July 13, 2004 by Jikrantz Quote
gweilo8888 Posted July 13, 2004 Author Posted July 13, 2004 Thanks for the help. Obviously on number 2 not expecting to be refunded if I don't use the entire package I paid for, just making sure there's no administrative or other charges for changing from one package to another. A reseller account would actually allow me to sell space I've paid for on to my site members, I presume? Not that I've actually done that before, but I might consider it. I'll wait a little bit and hopefully somebody else answer my other questions... Thanks again! Quote
LisaJill Posted July 13, 2004 Posted July 13, 2004 (edited) 1) Do you have any charge for hosting multiple domains on a single account? I currently only have a single domain, registered through GoDaddy.com, and have several sites using different subdomains under this. I'd like to have a few domains, one for each site, though. You can host multiple domains with one hosting account but they must all point to your root site and not to any subdomains. If you need to host several, distinct domains to different sites you'll need either several packages are a reseller depending on yoru preferences. 2) Is there any charge to change which package I'm hosted under, should I decide I need a bigger (or smaller) package than what I initially choose? No. 3) Do you have any uptime or other satisfaction guarantees?Only a 30 day money-back gaurantee for the first 30 days. That is limited to the first 30 days of hosting. No other gaurantees.4) Would I be able to run the Gallery script from http://gallery.menalto.com/ on your hosting packages? I run this using ImageMagick. Quite a few others do here as well... so yes. 5) Would I be able to run phpBB 2.x forums? My sites currently have two separate phpBB installs, one with 2571 users and 40415 articles, and another with 1424 users and 25713 articles. I'd expect these forums to continue to grow steadily.Yes, and there is even a one-click install for this.6) Would I be able to run the CyberScript EasyHost script from http://www.cyberscript.net/products/easyhost/ ? Technically yes - but a staffer should answer on if 'web hosting' type scripts are OK although this is not listed in 'banned scripts'. However you don't need it with a reseller packages - you get WHM and customers/whoever you're hosting for get CPanel so you may not even want that EasyHost thing. =) (edited to add in proper quoting because its nearly 4am and I forgot =) )Hope that helps! TCH-Andy Posted July 13, 2004 Posted July 13, 2004 (edited) Hi, 1) You would need a reseller account to host multiple domains on subdomains. 2) There is no charge for upgrading (you just pay the new monthly rate) 3) We do not provide a guarentee 4) The gallery script should be fine 5) phpBB is a one click install from cpanel 6) I have only had a quick look at the EasyHost script - but I think you would need a reseller account to run this. 7) The Severs are generally Dell Xeon quad processors 2.8GHz Edited July 13, 2004 by TCH-Andy Quote
gweilo8888 Posted July 13, 2004 Author Posted July 13, 2004 Thanks, Lisa. Not sure how quoting works here, so just putting my replies below: 1) I'd need the domains to point to different pages on my site, so I guess I'd need either separate accounts or a reseller account. If I signed up for separate accounts, would I later be able to combine these into a single reseller account? 6a) Where can I find the list of banned scripts, just to make sure nothing I might be likely to use is in there? 6b) Even if I got a reseller package, I would likely want to run EasyHost because I'd want my site members to be able to sign up for their small hosting space themselves without my intervention on validation of their email address by the script. The reason for that is because even if I am away for a period of weeks, I want the site to remain active, rather than becoming dormant because I wasn't there to sign up new users and let them host, which I presume would be the case with WHM. I'd also want their sites to be directories under a particular domain, with my template wrapped around their page, which I don't know if WHM can do. Thanks again for the answers, you folks are really helpful! I'll await replies from TotalChoice on whether EasyHost is allowable, and should run OK. Quote
gweilo8888 Posted July 13, 2004 Author Posted July 13, 2004 Wow, before I'd even replied I've got yet another helpful reply! Considering it is 4am, I am getting more and more impressed by the minute. I'll have a look at the details of the reseller accounts. Thanks again, will post here if I have any more questions (oh yeah, where's the list of banned scripts? Haven't seen that yet)... Many thanks again! Quote

gweilo8888 Posted July 13, 2004 Author Posted July 13, 2004 Help - I just signed up for hosting, but I may have a duplicate signup by mistake! I received the confirmation page, and saved it to my hard disk for safe keeping - but when I look at the AuthCode and TransID they're different to what they were before I saved the page... Did I make a duplicate signup, and if so how do I correct this? Quote
LisaJill Posted July 13, 2004 Posted July 13, 2004 You really need to submit a ticket (put n/a for id and password) including as many details as possible - including phone number and last 3 digits of credit card and name, etc - as much as you can to match the two. =) Also, if that script is allowed - be careful. You get a quota warning at 80% but if you're out of town for a few weeks and several people sign up - you may have some issues. Also, remember, you're responsibility for all of your resold users activity. =) Quote

Oh, and re: the script, I only intend to give out extremely small (several MB) accounts without intervention, and with a 1000 MB of disk space available on my selection of account (my site is only currently a few hundred MB, and that includes a bunch of log files I need to delete), I should be fine I think. Thanks for the warning though! Quote
gweilo8888 Posted July 13, 2004 Author Posted July 13, 2004 Well, I received my email with username and password, details for accessing cpanel, etc. a little over half an hour ago. (I'm on Server 5, by the way). Thing is - my username and password don't work thus far, and I can't access the site at the URL in the email. (404 error, no error page found either). So - how long after receiving the welcome email should it take for the site to be active? I presume passwords just have to propagate through the system or something... Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted July 13, 2004 Posted July 13, 2004 (edited) The webspace should be accessible when you receive the welcome email, but bring it up in the conversation about duplicate signups. There is a chance that the techs have temporarily disabled it to fix the duplicate signup, but that you will need to ask the tech guys. And by the way.... Welcome to your new extended and somehow crazy family. Edited July 13, 2004 by Jikrantz Quote
TCH-Andy Posted July 13, 2004 Posted July 13, 2004 Hi, The account should work immediately, but you will need to use the IP address. Propagation of the domain name takes up to 72 hours after you have set the DNS to our nameservers. Quote

Welcome to your new extended and somehow crazy family. Okeydoke, thanks. Haven't had any response to the ticket I opened as yet, but being a billing issue I'm guessing it won't get looked at until tomorrow morning (hope it'll be sooner but I'll certainly understand if not!) I'll just keep trying now and again, as I want to start my site uploading before I (finally) go to bed... Quote

Propagation of the domain name takes up to 72 hours after you have set the DNS to our nameservers. Hi Andy I'm using the IP address, but it isn't working yet (I've tried a dozen or more times, I'd guess). I've tried both the URL listed for my site http://66.36.242.244/~brngihzu/ and also logging into CPanel with the username and password I was sent, at the same IP address. No joy on either. Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted July 13, 2004 Posted July 13, 2004 Ok, you set it to go to billing. Try a new ticket to tech support and it should be solved quickly. Quote

I tried to guess what was the most likely people to deal with it, my bad. OK, I'll resubmit a ticket to tech support. Thanks again for the help! Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted July 13, 2004 Posted July 13, 2004 For fixing with duplicate signups I think billing is correct, but since you cant access the webspace, thats a tech issue, which is staffed 24/7. Quote
