ace Posted June 26, 2004 Posted June 26, 2004 Has anybody had any trouble using msn messenger 6.2 through a VPN connection? If I am connected to my works network via vpn then messenger will not connect and get logged in. As soon as I terminate the VPN then I can login just fine. I am using WinXp and connect to the internet via broadband. (weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee) its fast. Thanks for your help in advance Quote
kevan_j Posted June 27, 2004 Posted June 27, 2004 What is the VPN you are using? Can you connect to MSN Mess while you are at work? If so, then there may be a restriction imposed by your sys admins on Messenger connections via VPN. Also, the VPN may be set up to not allow 'split tunnelling'. This will not allow you to connect to anything else as long as the VPN is established. It forces all your traffic over the VPN. If split tunneling were allowed, then your MSN messanger traffic should not go over the VPN. There are many issues with VPNs, almost all of which are either security restrictions or routing problems. borfast Posted June 27, 2004 Posted June 27, 2004 (edited) I don't use MSN Messenger (as far as I'm concerned, it should be banned from the internet ) but I know the protocol allows you to use port 80 instead of the default port. I can't imagine why the VPN would interfere with the messenger connection but if it has something to do with the port, try setting it to use the alternative port and see if it works.
