The flickr thing sounds promising, especially since it will let me keep MT. I'm not apposed to WP, I'm just familiar with MT. I definitely don't want to maintain two different packages if I can help it. Having the family blog on WP and mine on MT could get confusing, at least for me. Thanks, and if there are more ideas, let me know!

I use MT on my blog and have for 2.5 years. Even though the rest of the world is switching to WP, I like MT. That said, MT is not for the faint of heart. It's a powerful tool and can be overwhelming. Some in my family now want to start a ;family blog' where several folks could post about what's going on adn even upload a picture or two. They want to be able to have it PW protected, so public freebie sites like blogger are out. I could doit with MT, but I wonder if it might be too much for those who are not PC or internet savvy (think Grandma). I want this to be as easy and clear as possible (again, think Grandma). Are there MT plugins that could simplify things like image uploads and entry creation? Would I be better off doing this through something else like WP or ?? I'd rather use MT since I already do and I'm familiar with it, I'm just not sure its the right tool for this.

I've tried and tried to like Firefox. As a minor computer geek & blogger I feel that I should like it, but I don't. Out of the box it's very basic, I need to go find all these plug ins to make it great. Then if you upgrade FF, the plug ins quit working. Ugh. I want to spend my time browsing, not managing my browser. Anyway, I found a better alternative, Maxthon. If you think IE is unsecure junk, you won't like it 'cause it's IE based. But, if you don't mind the IE core, it offers tabbed browsing and a ton of features built in. It's skinnable and offers a compliment of plug ins as well. One of the best features is mouse gestures. What a link opened in a new tab? Drag to the right while clikcing. What to search based on a phrase on a page? Same thing, highlight the text and drag right. the gestures aer configurable and offer many more featrues as well that I haven't yet explored. Want you tabs at the bottom where your Windows toolbar is? No problem, in FF you need a plugin. Want to translate the page? Links to babel fish and other translators are built in. The only down side that I've founs with Maxthon is that there's no Google Toolbar for it. It does have built in search toolbar that you can set to Google, Google but no toolbar. It's my exclusive browser and I dearly miss it when I'm at another PC.

[salguod eats his words - Blech] Well, I checked the 2 blogs I was referring too. I had thought they had listed they were running Spam Karma, but they did not. Maybe they are, maybe not, I can't tell. Does Spam Karma have a keyword filter? How is it configured? One of the biggest disappointments with Spamlookup in MT is that the keyword filter is blank upon installation. I've got a pretty good list now, but I get a few per month slip through. I used to run a code word image plug in that was 100% effective, but it was a slight pain for my readers so I eliminated it when I went to MT 3.2.
-
Actually, once configured, the SpamLookup plugin that comes bundled wiht MT does a very good job stopping both comment and plugin spam. Every now and then, a couple get through. Seen it happen on WP too, even with spam karma. It's a pain.

Really, that seems wierd. I thought the point of the throttling was to prevent a barage of TB spam. If it's blocked by SpamLookup, it seems that the throttling wouldn't be needed at that point. Oh well, nothing I can do about it but change my settings. Thanks.
-
I'm curious if you had any resolution on this. I just tried to to a trackback to my site from a new entry to an old and got that same error. I have not gotten any successful trackbacks on my site since I established it on TCH (2 whole days now). I have gotten many junk trackbacks, 115 as of this writing. Do junk trackbacks count toward the throttling score? If not, then my TB count is zero which would not explain why my trackback was throttled.

Nevermind. I deleted all my shtml files and rebuilt the site again and the proper permissions were set this time. I'm not sue why it didn't change the permissions on the existing files, but it seems OK now.
-
Thanks. I was headed down that path when I got your reply. I made those changes and rebuilt my site, but it did not change my archives to 664, they are still at 666. Why? The MT documentation and the comments of mt-config.cgi say that the umask settings should only be changed if I'm running MT under cgiwrap or suexec. Is that the case with TCH? If not, can I set this instead and accomplish the same thing? >HTMLPerms 0644 UploadPerms 0644
-
Turns out that ALL my files are being created with 666 permissions!

On my MT blog, I have templates set up for each side menu. I've names them 'alpha.php' for the left menu and 'gamma.php' for the right. I then use server side includes in my main and archive indexes to include those files. For some reason, after the switch to TCH, the files are being created with '666' permissions instead of '644'. This prevents them from being included properly. This was not an issue with my old host. Any ideas why this is happening?
-
Well, I know why it's not working but every time the file 'gamma.php' get's updated by my blog software, the permissions get re-set to '666' and it won't include any more. I'm going to post a question in the Movable Type section.
-
OK, I think I figured it out myself. The permissions on 'gamma' were 666 instead of 644. I'm not sure why MT output 'alpha' at 644 and 'gamma' at 666, but it seems to be fixed. Hopefully it stays fixed. Thanks for reading this, anyway.

From my error logs: >[Fri Apr 21 22:20:04 2006] [error] [client xx.xxx.xx.xxx] unable to include "/weblog/includes/gamma.php" in parsed file /home/xxxxxxxx/public_html/weblog/index.shtml [Fri Apr 21 22:20:04 2006] [error] [client xx.xxx.xx.xxx] Premature end of script headers: /home/xxxxxxxx/public_html/weblog/includes/gamma.php and >[2006-04-21 21:48:20]: error: file is writable by others: (/home/xxxxxxxx/public_html/weblog/includes/gamma.php)

OK, first of all, my site exists on two servers right now. Old host: salgUOd.net TCH: salgOUd.net (To complicate matters, the links on TCH point to the old host until I change the DNS on my main domain.) Anyway, if you compare those two pages above, you'll notice that the right side menu does not show up on the TCH page. I've checked it in IE, Maxthon and FireFox. Both menus are done with Server Side Includes. Both included files have a php extension. Both included files are in the same directory. Both include lines are the same:><!--#include virtual="/weblog/includes/alpha.php" --> and ><!--#include virtual="/weblog/includes/gamma.php" --> The file structure on the TCH server is the same as the old server. What's the problem?

Thanks guys, I was able to import my database just fine. We'll see how the rebuilding goes ...
-
Ahhh - the fog is begining to clear. Thanks a bunch.

One more thing. If I forward to another address with my old host, then I would go ahead and change the settings in my email client to look to the TCH servers, right? I would then know it's complete when mail started coming in, do I understand that correctly?
-
I do remember you telling me this before. (I feel a bit, uh, stupid with all of this.) I didn't quite understand what you meant before, but I got it now. What if you don't have another email acount? For example, my parents have email acounts with my domain. They don't have other email acounts and they live in another city. Their ISP of course would give them one, but they are not tech savvy at all, walking them through it over the phoine is challenging. I want to make it as painless as possible, for them in particular. Also, does changing the DNS move the email to the TCH server as well? I asked the IT guy here at work about this and he said no, that's the MX something. He said changing the DNS only effects web traffic, not email. If so, how do I change the MX? Is that on my other host? Thanks for your patience with my ignorance and likely asking the same question repeatedly.

Heh. That sounded like a plan, eh? Here's what I've done: Registerd with TCH w/ the mispelled domain Installed MT in my web space. I still have to import the MySQL dateabase and ??? Somehow I've got to make it so that when folks type in www.salgUOd.net they get to TCH insted of the other place. I guess tha means changing my DNS a tmy old host, that much I think I know. Now if you go to salgUOd.net you get my old web space, if you type in salgOUd.net you get to TCH. Somehow I've got to make it so that an email sent to someone@salguod.net goes throught the TCH servers instead of the old ones. How? Then I've got to change my and others email clients so that the mail comes through. When? Is the timeing important? Will mail get lost if one thing happens before another? I want to just be able use salGUOd.net when this is all done. I mean, I now go to ftp.salgUOd.net to get to my still active old host and ftp.salgOUd.net to get to TCH. I just want to be able to ignore the mis-spelled domain and kinda have it there in the background helping out the bad typists and bad spellers out there. I hope that makes more sense.
-
OK, I've managed to get myself confused. Hopefully I can explain this so it make sense. This is sort of an extension of my pre-sales question here. I'm in the process of transferring my site to TCH. I will have 2 domain names, because folks frequently mis-spell my domain. I want that misspelling to still get folks to my site, particularly for email, so I registered it with TCH when I signed up. So: I've got my original address with another host (for now) and registrar: www.salgUOd.net Now I've got my new address hosted and registered with TCH: www.salgOUd.net I've been using that new (misspelled) address to install Moveable Type and get it going. I'm ready to switch my main domain, www.salgUOd.net, to point it to TCH. I want to do this so I don't mess up my email or loose mail in the process. - In the end I want my main domain at TCH to be salgUOd.net, not salgOUd.net like it is now. - Ideally, any email addressed to someone@salgOUd.net would automatically get forwarded to someone@salgUOd.net - Ideally, any web traffic to www.salgOUd/net/some/web/page would automatically get sent to www.salgUOd/net/some/web/page What steps should I take to do so? My parents also have email addresses through my domain, and they live in another city and are not PC savvy at all. I want to make the switch for their email as painless as possible. Please be specific as this is very confusing to me. I am mechanically inclined and will tackle any car problem, but this stuff makes my head spin a bit. Thanks to TCH folks for helping me a bunch already.

Thanks a lot. You guys have all been very helpful as I do this transfer. One last question: So I should do everything that David mentions up to the import prior to opning my support ticket. In other works, all support will do is the import. Right?

Howdy, I'm in the process of movingmy MT 3.2 blog to TCH. My old host does not have cPanel, so I'm having to re-install. I've got MT installed in my TCH webspace and all my plugins installed as well. I plan on doing a MySQL dump from the old host and importing it here. Question: The fresh MT install created a default blog, which I haven't configured at all. Should I delete it prior to importing the MySQL dump? Will the import create a new blog in addition to it or will it transmortify the default blog into my blog? Or will I make a mess? Can I do the MySQL import (if so how) or should I leave that up to TCH (and if so, how) Thanks,

At download.com, WSFTP got 5 stars from the editors but only 3 from the readers (16 votes). Several readers complained of instability. Core FTP LE got 4 / 4.5 stars between editors and readers (247 votes), SmartFTP got 5/4 (200 votes). SmartFTP was downloaded 9.5 million times, Core FTP about a half a million. Yes, I'm overly analytical. I'm going to try SmartFTP. Thanks,

I used WSFTP when I first started on the web, but found that it wasn't real stable. That was 2+ years ago, however. I'm also begining to wonder it the trouble wasn't my FTP program but my host!
