Hi Bruce, Sorry I haven't responded before now. Frankly, things went into warp drive around here and I forgot about asking this. Could it be that it only limits the size of the inbox? Hey, now there's a thought! The person in question sends a lot of large graphics and document files, so maybe the bulk of it was in the Sent folder. If it happens again, I'll look at it from that angle. Thanks for the input

Hi everyone, I have a question about setting quotas for mail accounts in Cpanel. It was my understanding that if I set an individual mailbox with a quota, that it would start bouncing mail when that quota was reached. That's what I told one of my clients would happen in an effort to get them to watch their mailboxes and clean them out once in awhile (it's been a problem with this client). I must have been wrong though. I was just monitoring this client's disk space usage, etc. and wanted to check on how much space their mail was taking up. I was surprised to notice one account, whose quota I have set at 10 megs, was using up 72 megs of disk space. Was I wrong about the purpose of setting these quotas? What do the quotas mean and what's their purpose?

Thanks David. I'm having what seems to be a convoluted problem with my webmail. Tech support can't duplicate it from their end, but I've duplicated it on four different systems and two ISP locations here. Must be something burrowed down deep somewhere and they're trying to smoke it out.

What does it mean when you have an active help desk ticket, and the status says it's "On Hold?" That the problem is being worked on?
-
I'm on my way! Thanks for narrowing the focus on this.

Oh Crud! I guess I spoke too soon. I can send test messages to myself ie: from soandso@ domain.com - To somebodyelse@domain.com, but I can't send to anyone outside my domain. I sent the four from one of my accounts to another and they were fine. But then I tried to send to a friend, my husband (who is on another server here at TCH) and myself at an outside webmail address. All three gave me the error. Care to make another stab at it? Don't worry, you're still awesome

All Hail Bill!!! All Hail Bill!!! I just sent four from different mail accounts and they all soared like eagles. btw, was the firewall change what knocked the forums on their tookus for a few minutes? I had just posted my response to you and was trying to go back to the index, when: IPB WARNING [2] mysql_connect(): Lost connection to MySQL server during query (Line: 120 of /ips_kernel/class_db_mysql.php) There appears to be an error with the database. You can try to refresh the page by clicking here. Hello Bill, I logged in and tried to send one this morning, and got the error. The last time (only time in fact) that I successfully sent outgoing mail yesterday was about 3:30 in the afternoon. The error message I get is in my original post. If you need any other info, let me know here (don't run any IM programs because I'm a semi-Luddite).

I haven't had any problems with AVG before, although I've only been using it a couple of months. Now that I actually was able to send mail using this comp, I'm starting to wonder again. The problem seems intermittant which suggests it could be something else entirely and not the AV. Should I submit another ticket, you think? I'm fresh out of ideas.
-
Well, this is getting really strange. I just tried sending from four different accounts and they all went as nice as you please. Then all of the sudden the error started up again.
-
Okay, don't AVG on any machines here in my office so I can't test that scenario. That just seems so bizaare to me that you can't send a new message using your http://yourdomain.ext/sqmail You are logging in with your full domain email address I assume. you@yourdomin.ext <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yep, full email addy, and password. But if you think that's weird... I just went to one of my accounts to give it another try and it went like lightening. Two seconds later I tried to send another and got the error again. So now I'm totally confused.

Hi Bruce, Yes, I'm talking about sending via squirrel webmail. Okay, I didn't think you needed SMTP for webmail, but the error kept saying that and the account manager said be sure to authenticate SMTP, so I took a shot (have a bad headcold and my brain isn't exactly firing on all cylinders today) No, I'm not using Avast. It's something called AVG and is freeware that came highly recommended. I can't say for certain that this is what's causing the problem because I hadn't tried to use the mail before the update. But the update coming in coupled with the fact that I had no problem sending mail on a computer that isn't running that AV program, made me start thinking in that direction. Oh, I forgot to mention that I can foreward any existing mail with no problem, but I can only send a new message if I access the sq mail via cpanel... which is a little weird.
-
Hi all, I'm having a very weird problem with my sq mail that seems to be here on my end. I can log into my mail, read mail, delete mail, all the good stuff. But I can't SEND any mail. More specifically I can't send unless I'm logged into cpanel. From there I can do everything normally. But if I follow my sq mail shortcut and try to send anything I get the following error: ERROR: Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable Server replied: 550 server75.blahblahblah is currently not permitted to relay through this server. Perhaps you have not logged into the pop/imap server in the last 30 minutes or do not have SMTP Authentication turned on in your email client. This is webmail, not pop mail, and I haven't changed any settings. I submitted a help ticket and the techs asked for log in info for one of my accounts, which I gave them. They had no trouble at all sending mail from it. After several rounds and attempts, I decided to try using a different computer. Interestingly enough, I was able to send three messages without a hitch from the other comp. This tells me it's something on this computer and may have something to do with an antivirus update that came in this morning. So now I'm trying to find out if said AV update turned something off that it shouldn't have. I focused on the SMTP authentication suggestion first - did it somehow turn that off? I began looking for this in cpanel and had no luck, so I went to my welcome email and found email setup information: Outgoing Mail Server mail.****. Only, when I try to access this (using my real domain name, of course), I get told there's no account configured there. So, where do I access these setting so I can check on the SMTP authentication? If anyone has any other constructive ideas, I'm all ears.

Not sure what you mean by running multiple stat scripts, but I did submit a ticket and AWStats is now restored. Thanks for the advice.
-
Thanks Lisa. They must have used an earlier version when they repaired the server. I'll wait awhile to drop a ticket though. Sounds like they've been through enough lately, and it isn't that critical.
-
I was reading something in another thread about heavy bandwidth usage that made me want to look at mine (if only for the laughs). So I logged into cpanel and something looked different. Instead of the Awstats feature there's something called webalizer and the layout and info is all different. I'm on server 75, which as we all know threw a hissy fit a couple of days ago and required a major overhaul. From what I understand Bill and Co. had to reinstall everything from a backup. Could that be why the stat interface is different? It's no huge deal, I've never been proficient at understanding all of that anyway. But I was beginning to figure it out and now I'll have to be retrained!

This is something I've always done and never really thought about whether or not it was advisable. Like many others, it just seems the thing to do. With very rare exceptions, the techs here have always solved my problems within minutes and I appreciate that greatly. I especially love the times when the problem is solved before I can log into my mail to find their response. Take a bow TCH techs!

Great! Thanks Rob.

Hi all, Been MIA for a while, but I'm still alive. I want to buy a starter plan web package as a birthday gift for my husband. Trying to keep him off the streets, ya know? Problem is, I have no idea what he'd want to call the site - as far as a domain name. I'd hate to take a guess and stick him with something when, for all I know he might have a much better idea. I think it's possible to buy a plan and reserve domain name registration for later, but I thought I'd ask first. Can I do this? Also, as this would be a surprise, can I have the welcome letter sent to me, then change his contact info later? I would like to order this today or tomorrow, but not have him aware of it until his birthday on 12/25 (yes, he's a Christmas baby). Thanks for any input. D. J.

*In all fairness to TCH the ticket has only been pending since September 7th.* Well, technically. The date of my original ticket request was Friday September 3. I thought I got it in early enough that I'd catch them before closing, but I guess I missed. Because of the holiday they just didn't see it until Tuesday the 7th. It's been my experience here with tech support that things get solved within an hour - if not in minutes. I realize this is a little more detailed, but all I'm trying to find out is - should I go ahead and pay the full amount on the credit card statement, and I'll be reimbursed, or are they going to adjust the billing directly with the bank? That's what I asked on the 7th and three days later I still don't know. Really, in all fairness to me, it doesn't seem like that tough a question. Mike, thanks for the clarification on the billing. I have no idea which billing system I got. I don't even remember if I had a choice. I just entered the requested data and presto! D. J.

Thanks everyone. Bill, the ticket # is GXT-31826 I did try to pay for the full year when I signed up. The thinking was that, by ordering on the first day of a given month, I would bypass the pro-rated charge. But my card was only charged $4.58 for July. I did wonder if the $55 was for an 11 or 12 mo period, but my support ticket reply was never answered. Sorry for putting this here, but I couldn't seem to get answered using the ticket method. By the way, the account in question is only one of four that I handle here at TCH. Three others I admin for others, and now I've moved here myself. I couldn't agree more that TCH is the absolute best host going! No huge problem, and I'm not soured on TCH by a long shot. I knew this would work itself out in time, but I was just concerned about this incident mostly because with credit cards time really is money. Thank again for the input and assistance. D. J. Hi, I wouldn't bring this up here, but it's been a week and I still only have a quasi-answer to my problem. I opened my credit card statement last Friday to find three charges listed - different invoice numbers, but all from TCH and all on the same day (8-3-04). Each one was for $55 for a total of $165. Trouble is, I only ordered 1 account here on this card. I opened the account on July 1 and was charged a pro-rated amount for that month. Now this comes up. I opened a help ticket and alerted the billing dept. of the error. They got back to me and said there'd been a glitch in the billing program last month and she said she was moving the ticket to another dept. so I would be "refunded" the additional charges. What does this mean? Beats me. I asked, and have yet to get an answer. So am I supposed to pay this excessive and erroneous balance on the card secure in the knowledge that a refund of $110 is headed my way or what? I pay this card in full every month so as not to accrue interest. I certainly don't want to pay interest on charges that don't belong to me. As i said this has been up in the air for a week now - at least on my end - and my husand asked me what's up last night. On a related note: I paid a pro-rated amount for the month of July. Now I'm being billed $55 for the remainder of the year. So where does this "free month" of hosting come into play? Thanks to anyone who can prod this issue into resolution for me. D. J.

Who Is Your Favorite Registrar? Recommendations?
D. J. replied to dlevens's topic in Open Discussion
Hey again, dlevens, no it wasn't spam. It had links to different parts of the registrars site where you could find out more info, etc. I also checked with the host who registered me and they vouched for it. I agree 100%. The first place to offer shielded registration info is going to get a lot of business! Actually, I'm surprised no one has done it already, but then I don't know what would be involved. I just look on the way it's done now as a hand out to marketers and lord knows they don't need any help bugging people. Oh, I missed this last time, but - Jim, you ARE kidding about going back to Geocities, right???? Later. -
Who Is Your Favorite Registrar? Recommendations?
D. J. replied to dlevens's topic in Open Discussion
Hey everybody, well, miraculously I'm jumping into a thread while it's still active! I was stunned yesterday to get this in my mail from, I'm assuming, ICANN >Dear Domain Administrative Contact, As required by ICANN, this message is an annual reminder to help you keep the contact data associated with your domain registration up-to-date. It is vital that all data remain current. Important notifications are sent via this information and inaccurate data could result in cancellation of your valuable domain name registration. Blah, blah. Now, my first question was, if this is an "annual" mailing, why is this the first one I've ever gotten in the three years I've had a domain name? Secondly, this irritates me because for those three years I've had no trouble using my current (soon to be old) host's address and phone number. This was done at the host's suggestion by the way. See, way back when I first signed with that company, they had a buggie email client. One day, I sent a single message to an online store asking if they would be interested in stocking my book. Next morning, I open my mail to find a tersely worded message back saying "stop sending this mail." Well, I thought they were mixing me up with someone else or just being nasty. But NO! The minute I went offline, my phone rang. It was the owner of the store wanting to talk to whoever was in charge. Seems at that point, he'd gotten forty-five repeats of the same message and they were coming in every ten minutes. After I calmed him down and convinced him I wasn't a spammer, I went in search of why this was happening. That's when I learned about the "buggy" mail client. I also wanted to know how this guy had gotten my phone number. Silly me, I had no idea the info I'd given when I registered the domain was going to become "public record." And, if I may say so, that it does is complete b.s. Talk about giving the telemarketers and junk mailers a handy tool! Well, anyway, when I told the host I didn't appreciate having my private, unlisted, phone number where the whole world could see it, they suggested using their info instead. That way, if someone needed to contact me, they would just give them my email addy. Now I get this from ominous sounding missive and I'm right back in the same boat. So I gave them a P. O. Box and zip code - which the USPS assures me is sufficient to recieve mail there - and I'm told Nope! Not Good Enough! We need a city and state. This really irked me. I thought possibly, because that host now knows I'm cancelling my account and moving my site here to TCH, they were trying to put the squeeze on me for more money somehow (my registration was through them and has a year left on it). So I came here to see what I could learn about this "annual" mailing and I learn it's legit (grumble). Obviously my only option is going to be - pay to keep my info private. I have no idea how much they charge, but how much does TCH charge for a silent listing? If the difference is as marked as the price of hosting is, I'll swallow the year's registration I've already paid for and transfer the domain registration here too. -
Hi Guys! And thanks for the response. Okay, on this lady's site, I have a graphic icon that says "sign my guestbook." Is this where I add the code at the bottom of the "simple guestbook" page? (I'm assuming that). Then I upload the new page (or just edit the html file in cpanel). Warning - Next I'll get into "view my guestbook."
