  1. I found two great how to articles for setting up Spam Assassin and Mail Scanner and wanted to share with this forum. It would be a great addon if we can get this at TCH. HOWTO: Upgrade layer1 MailScanner SpamAssassin Rules Emporium Dennis
  2. Mike, In my post I specifically addressed that concern. Everytime when it was slow for me I was told the server load was less than 10%. There is no need to get defensive. I am only trying to ask other people if they have experienced this issue. I am not the idiot user who complains about random slowness. I am specifically talking about cases where it litterally hangs while I count up to 20 seconds. It seems to be related to the login process. I also have odd hours for most people and had the issue happen at 3am a few times, and after checking the server stats it showed one user connected. Your example would work for most cases of people complaining about general slow downs and trust me, I have worked in IT for 7 years now so I know about the "hey its slow, what gives?" BS you see from end users. Also I spent a lot of time testing this using different computers and different internet connections to try and eliminate "the problem lies between the keyboard and chair" type of thing. Also since running the stand alone install of squirrelmail on the same server, which load on the server would also affect me, I have not had any hangs at all processing the login. I am also running close to 20 plugins so the install is not a light install. I do apologize for the blanket statement that something MUST be wrong with your install, but to just assume nothing is wrong at all on your end seems equally unjustified. I am not able to determine why it hangs for so long logging in, so I attempted to find other users on the same server who might have had the same experience. Server 74 seems to be fairly new and not many users seem to be connected to it when I check the status, so either there are not many users using the sqmail on port 80 for this server or I am just crazy and the issue lies somewhere on my side. In either case, my stand alone install is working great right now, so I will give this concern up. Although if you were really curious I could create you a mailbox on my account for sh**s and giggles. Maybe you could login a few times now and then just to see if it happens once. By the way I never mentioned the process hangs on http://www.levens.com/sqmail/src/redirect.php And just for your info, while writing this I attempted a login and was able to flip back between browsers like 10 times while I was attempting to write down the exact url above by reading the status bar of internet explorer. This time it took 28 seconds to login. So again I need to clarify that at this point I am only searching for possible reasons and take back the assumption I made that there is an issue with the install on your end. I can PM you an account and login for testing. Right now things are fast as I finish this email. I wonder if it is only the first login after not being logged in for long period of time, because once it logs in, I have always been able to log out and log back in fast. Well enough babbling for now. I hope we are good Mike, cause I love this place and love the support you guys provide and I do not want to burn my bridges. Dennis
  3. There would most likely be a difference in speed, but I am talking about it hanging for a good 20 seconds before logging in. This does not seem to happen for most of the people here but so far I have not found anyone else on server 74. I would say about 1 out of 3 or maybe 1 out of 4 tries I would hang for about 15 to 20 seconds before it would login. Then the other 2 or 3 times it would log in fast. So I know even with the extra security checks that it is capable of a fairly quick login. Why it hangs 25 to 30% of the time loging and sometimes on a refresh is a mystery. So far I have been on my stand alone install for about 5 days and it logs in quickly every time. This leads me to believe there is something wrong with the serverwide install of sqmail on server 74. If possible maybe you can use server 74 for a week or so and see if you experience the same thing. Dennis
  4. Has anyone installed a standalone squirrelmail and gotten one of the two quota plugins to work? I have been fighting with this for a few days now and cannot get my quota to display on my squirrelmail install. Dennis
  5. I think it is a config issue on server 74. I decided to install my own copy of squirrelmail on the same server 74 and it is extremely fast. I think they will be upgrading sqmail soon on the servers so hopefully that will fix it up. Dennis
  6. Trying to revive this post. I am in the process of trying to figure out how to install a quota plugin for squirrelmail to solve this exact issue. I have no luck so far. I do not know enough about linux and where my quota file resides to get the pluggin working. I found two pluggins that do the job out on squirrelmail.org but so far cannot get either to work. If anyone can assist it would be gretaly appreciated. Dennis
  7. Has anyone used this plugin on squirrelmail? I am curious how this works. Does it filter the mail as it comes in? Or does a client need to be open for the filtering to happen. I am looking for a way to filter mail before I even open my client, thus avoiding setting up filters for each email client I use. Dennis
  8. most of my slowdowns are loggin in. I am on server 74 Dennis
  9. I wanted to check with other SquirrelMail users who use the www.yourdomainhere.com/sqmail on port 80. Every now and then I get major slowdowns trying to login. About 1 in every 3 times I login I have to wait 15 to 20 seconds before I login. The main page at sqmail seems to load fast but as soon as I click login, I wait and wait sometimes for 20 seconds. Then there are times that as soon as I click login I login in about 2 seconds. It does not appear to be server load as I submitted a helpdesk ticket and at the time the server load was less than 5%. And of course the person on the helpdesk logged in to my acocunt in 2 seconds when he tried so they said there was no issues. But for me this happens way to often (like I said approximately 1 in every 3 times) and I cannot recreate the problem. It happens at different times of the day and I use more than 3 different computers to check my squirrelmail (work, home, laptop) and have experienced this issue on all 3. So I ruled out my internet connection and the local computer. I don't know enough about the backend of squirrelmail but maybe someone can think of some things for helpdesk to look into? maybe php issues? or some backend process that happens when you click login? Dennis
  10. I was trying to install 1.4.3a squirrelmail on my domain but cannot seem to get it working. Currently I get this error when logging in: Error opening ../data/default_pref Could not create initial preference file! /home/mxgiiyh/.sqmaildata/ should be writable by user nobody Please contact your system administrator and report this error. I have never done this before and have only setup a few things in config.php I am not sure how to run the perl help script so am trying to do it all through ftp. I have a feeling my permissions are wrong. I am trying to point my data folder to the .sqmaildata on my ftp root. What I would really like to do is get my own setup of squirrelmail working but pointing to the same inbox and folders as the one hosted by TCH on port 80. Dennis
  11. I decided to do a test so I setup both a forwarder and a filter for the same email address. In every test the filter reads first. I set up a forward to go to one account and a filter to go to another account and when ever I send an email to the test account the filter always read it first and sent the email there. Just in case anyone wanted to know And if you ever forget which one reads first just remember the Alphabet, Fi for filter comes before fo for forward. Dennis
  12. Andy, When you get a chance can you take a look at my ticket that I submitted to helpdesk? It is GWP-24071 Aromal is tell me that authentication is not used for smtp outbound, and that I should download with pop first and then smtp will work. I disagree. I want authentication to work, because when I dont use it, it sends my email through my local ISP smtp which I want to avoid. Also I don't want to use POP as I prefer IMAP. Dennis
  13. ok works for me. Just found it odd that I could not figure out the difference between the two, always makes me assume I am missing something or some function. I wonder if there is a difference in processing time, like filters hit before forwarders or vice versa. Anyone have the time for a test? Maybe I can find some time later and figure that out. Dennis
  14. hmm, not sure what you are doing wrong. But I just tried it again and it worked perfectly. I set amazon@**** to forward to a mailbox and amazon@**** is not a valid address and I do not have it in my forwarders. I removed the filter and got the same result setting it up as a filter. I assume you set it to contains and not EXACT? sometimes the email address is contained in " " or <> so exact wont work. But use a filter contains on the to field. I know it works cause I just did it. Dennis
  15. Andy, The problem is back. When I try to send email I get a pop up asking me to login to mail.levens.com and even with my email address as username and password I get this error Dennis
  16. Maybe it is just too late and I am too tired to think straight, but how do you save an email that spam assassin sent to the Spam Box that was not spam? I use squirrelmail to read my email and could not find where I say this is not spam. Dennis
  17. Bruce, I believe you can filter an email that does not exist. What I meant was a filter can take the place of a forward. So lets say I temporarly want amazon.com to reach me so I tell them my email address is amazon@**** Instead of making a forward of amazon@**** forward to mymainaccount@**** I could use filtering instead and say all emails to amazon@levens.com go to mymainaccount@**** thus doing exactly the same thing as a forward. Which brings me back to my original question, what is the difference between the forwarders option and filtering since you can do everything you can do in forwarding in the filter area. Seems redundant to have both. Which is why I am doubting myself and thinking I am missing something here. Dennis
  18. I vote we delete it. No need to rehash this again. Dennis
  19. Rick you are correct. My bad, it was Bruce who said that. I owe you one now Dennis
  20. will take a look at that url, I just finished testing Box Trapper and it is working now. Not sure when it was turned on but I just tried for the first time today and it worked great. Sort of like caller ID blocking in that the sender has to verify themselves one time to be allowed through. After that they go through without needing to validate. Problem is I think hotmail and some other free email services block NDRs, or maybe it is just a reply from Box Trapper, just a guess. Dennis
  21. It wont matter if you send in lovey dovey, HTML or packaged in shinning foil, all emails with HTTP in the message body will go through just fine. It is only attachments that are being filtered. Dennis
  22. Bruce, But you can also just delete the filter in the same speed and manner as deleting a forward, no? The only difference I can see between these two is forward only allows you to forward mail based on the TO: field where as filter can do from field, subject, body etc. Dennis
  23. My helpdesk ticket was answered by Rick and he believed that Spam Assassin does not filter emails that are forwarded. But then again he also said Box Trapper was not installed on the servers at TCH, which I just verified is not true. Box Trapper is working just fine. Just teasing you rick but yes Box Trapper is installed and working. I still probably wont use it but good to know it is installed and working. So can someone verify for sure if Spam Assassin filters emails that are forwarded using the forwards feature in cpanel??? Pretty please? Dennis
  24. Hammerz, I saw your poll and voted to keep things as they are. It would have been nice if you at least included a link to this thread to avoid having to go searching for it. I am sure many have said already but it wont matter if TCH allowed all attachments to go through because most of the people receiving your email will have it stopped or filtered by their ISP. This is very common, especially if your receipient is on one of the big 5 ISPs or at work. To send URLs just copy the address into the body of the email like this Google Much easier than attaching it, and it won't get blocked. Dennis
