How To Filter Mail To Folder At The Server Level
dlevens replied to dlevens's topic in CPanel and Site Maintenance
I read somewhere that something like procmail or something like that could sort mail into folders at the server level? BTW why is it that some of my posts, even though I always enable replies to be emailed to me, do not notify me? Fortunately I stumbled back across this post and found two replies but I did not get emails telling me you both replied. Dennis -
Bruce, Thanks for the info, I have seen that post many times as it seems everyone refers to it. But before I just go copy someone else I want to make sure I completely understand how this all works. Plus I use IMAP which gives me easy access to subscribing to the spam box folder. I found out that Box Trapper traps all emails and forces the sender to respond to a verification email before they can send email directly to you. I was told by Rick that this feature is not installed on the TCH servers. Not sure I would want to use it though as it would be such a pain the I AM A SPAMMER for people trying to reach me. Does anyone use the email filter inside squirrelmail? Or is it a waste if you are already using spam assassin? Also Spam Assassin only filters email sent to mailboxs created on your domain. For all emails that you forward out no filtering happens. I was wondering if there is a way to filter even emails you forward? And lastly for now is there any server side virus filtering that we have access to setting up in similar fashion to Spam Assassin? Dennis
-
Also can somone explain in detail the following: 1. Box Trapper 2. Spam Box If I understand correctly Spam Assassin is server side filter that will filter ALL email addresses at **** ? And then depending on my settings will either rename the subject and send the mail to the correct mailbox or if I turn on Spam Box it will deliver all SPAM to some hidden mailbox? This is where I am confused what is Spam Box? Where is it? Do I need to create a mailbox spam@**** for the spam box to work? If I wanted all SPAM to be delivered to each mailbox that it belongs to what do I do? If I have all spam delivered to one place like spam box how do I look at it? Dennis
-
Can someone please explain this better? I do not understand what they mean by "You can create a "new" e-mail account that has precisely the same settings as your e-mail account, but add: "/spam" to the end of the e-mail account user name. This will retrieve only your Spam Box mail" Dennis

How To Filter Mail To Folder At The Server Level
dlevens replied to dlevens's topic in CPanel and Site Maintenance
Mike, Email filtering allows me to specify which mailbox to put the email into but does not allow me to specify which folder inside the mailbox to put it into. For instance I want to say all emails sent to tch@**** to be direct to myname@**** but then go one step futher and say put it inside the TCH Forum folder. So far the only way to do this is to setup filters in squirrelmail and then also set up filters in thundermail, but then when I decide to switch email programs I have to setup all my filters again. HOWEVER, I just thought of a new question. What is the difference between forwarders and email filters? For instance I have one mailbox that I have all of my email forwarded to. And when I sign up a new account or go to some website that wants to know my email address I just tell them my email address is theircompanyname@****, then I go into forwarders and add a new forwarder for theircompanyname@**** to forward to myname@**** But now that I think about it, would it be better if I instead just use email filtering to do this? Dennis -
Yes you can, but there are limitations. If you sort from webmail, when you go to download via pop it only downloads the inbox, any mail sorted before hand is stuck in those folders on the server. If you sort after you download to your local client then you cannot see those email anywhere but on the local client. With IMAP I can sort on any client and still download the email on any client. This way I can have "LIVE" email sorting for emails I want to leave on the server and be able to access anywhere. I tend to have a lot of emails that require attention for a few weeks and do not like to only access them from home, and don't like them kept unsorted in the inbox while left on the server. IMAP seems to solve all these issues, keeping me organized and giving me the most flexibility. Now, if only I could sort the mail at the server level before I even open an email client. Working on that next. Dennis

Has anyone figured out a way to filter email at the server level so that you dont have to setup rules on each email client you use? I only need like 15 filters but I use webmail at work, outlook or thundermail at home and would like a way to setup the filtering at the server so I dont have to set it up on each client. Any suggestions on how to accomplish this? Dennis

Smtp - Does It Require Authentication?
dlevens replied to dlevens's topic in CPanel and Site Maintenance
Andy, It appears to be working now, maybe because they fixed mail.****? But now sending using authentication is working. What I dont understand is why it works without authentication? I removed using username and password for outgoing smtp and it still works. I assumed it was because pop had authenticated first thus allowing me in but this was not the case, as outlook always tests smtp first before pop or IMAP when using the test email check. So I rebooted thinking maybe I had authentication still on or maybe cached somehow but still it seems to work now whether I use authentication or not. The other question I had was reguarding mail.****, is there something special setup on that subdomain? since both mail.**** resolves to the same IP as **** why would it make a difference if I used mail.**** or just **** or even just the IP? Curious because when I was having most of the problems I was using just **** (before I had helpdesk repair mail.****). The last question I had was reguarding SPA, do I use Secure Password Authentication (SPA) for POP or SMTP? Dennis -
Smtp - Does It Require Authentication?
dlevens replied to dlevens's topic in CPanel and Site Maintenance
Andy, That is what I thought, but it is not working. I had the helpdesk repair mail.levens.com and that is working but smtp will not work if I have it require authentication. Port 25 is open to levens.com and I set up pop3 and smtp to mail.levens.com but no matter what settings I try for authentication for smtp it fails and asks me for my password. I am using myname@**** as the username and the password is the same as I created for the mailbox. It logs into pop with no problems but when trying to send a message it wont work. I have tried it in outlook 2003 and mozilla thundermail. Dennis -
I seem to be confusing myself trying to get outlook and thunderbird working. I am not sure if there is a difference if you use IMAP or POP, but what settings for SMTP do we need ? and does it require authentication? I read on this forum that we need to use our ISP for SMTP? But in another place I saw you can use your domain like mail.****** for both pop and smtp? First off mail.****** is not setup to resolve by default, but I did not see the point to create a subdomain just to resolve this address so I use **** for both POP and SMTP. Actually in my case I use IMAP so I use it for both IMAP And SMTP. But I also read that SMTP requires authentication but using my email address and password is not working. Port 25 is open so I know my ISP is not blocking it. Would I need to use my cpanel login id for authentication for SMTP? does not see like that would be right since I would have to give it out to everyone I make an email account for. I need some help, and once i get this all figured out I will put together a one stop shop for all questions webmail and email as there are so many sources on this forum, in your welcome email, and on some of the tutorial guides and they do not all agree or provide the same info. I cannot remember where I read on these forums that one of the 3 webmail options is no longer being developed? And TCH may remove it from the choices? It would be good to know since I am still trying to decide which of the 3 to go with. Anyone know which one it was? Dennis

Jim, I also only use one ending account email so I am still not sure how the multiple account works in IMAP. But the reason I use IMAP is I like to see my email sorted. Having one large inbox with email from family, mixed with bills, and mixed with misc is a mess to me. Since I used to use hotmail I was used to having filters move mail from bills@**** to the bills folder etc. Hotmail is not really pop or IMAP but more closely resembles IMAP over anything else. Poll - What Email Program Do You Use?
dlevens replied to dlevens's topic in CPanel and Site Maintenance
Well from the looks of things it is rare to find an all in one solution. Like most all I want is something that takes little time to manage, stops most spam, smart, handles IMAP, and allows me to check my email anywhere and see the same folder organization. And the ability to set smart filters that will put certain email in different folders so I can organize family, bills, forums etc, and lastly I want the ability to sort mail at the server so no matter where I check mail it gets sorted to the right folders. Looks like I have a long way to go to make this all work. Dennis -
wow, am I the only one who uses IMAP? Dennis
-
Another Poll, I wish we could do several polls in one post. I chose IMAP because I like the flexibility of checking from many sources and still maintaing folder structure. I wish delete function worked the same as POP though. Dennis Levens

Poll - What Email Program Do You Use?
dlevens replied to dlevens's topic in CPanel and Site Maintenance
I will go first to help get things rolling: I voted for outlook 2003 as that is my most use program today. But I am considering switching to Mozilla Thunderbird. When away from home I use horde and when behind a firewall I use mail2web I am still not happy with my current means of handling email which is why I am doing this poll and looking for other clients. I am also very new to IMAP but am considering going this route, which is another reason I may drop Outlook 2003 and go with Thunderbird. I like IMAP because I can manage email and folders from more than one client. In the past I have used hotmail for more years than I can remember and liked that I could check it anywhere, and also use Outlook and see the same folders and structure. I would then just drag email to personal folders in outlook to stay below the 2mb limit. This worked well for me. IMAP seems to give me this same situation but being new to IMAP I am frustrated with how email gets deleted. It seems all programs do it different and the limitation of IMAP may allow one email program to fool you into thinking the email was moved to the trash but when you go and check the same account from horde the email is still there but has a line through it and a second copy is in the trash. For spam I have been fortunate as I have used DNS forwarding for my domain for about 5 years so I have avoided the hotmail spam but setting filters to exclusive (only people in my contact list can reach me) and then when giving out my email only family and friends get my main email myname@**** and all otherwebsites get nameofwebsite@****, then when Amazon gives away my email and I get spam being sent to Amazon@**** I can shut it off. Lately my catch all email is picking up randomnames@**** so I will need to eventually :blackhole: that and setup each nameofwebsite@**** to forward to myname@**** OK so I was not as short and precise as I should have been Dennis Levens PS DAMN you guys are fast, I was supposed to be going first LOL -
I am new to the TCH community but have already discovered that the talent over here is far above the norm. I would like to tap into your experience and expertise to find out how people are handling email instead of letting email handle them. Please vote and let us know your preferred way to check your email. If you use two methods (like webmail when away from home and outlook when at home) then vote twice. But do not vote for a program you used to use, only programs you use now. {EDIT} It appears you can only vote once, so please add to your post what other methods you use and only choose the most used program for the pole. Also, let us know why you like they way you do things or if you are still looking for the best way, or what you are still looking for. As a side note you can let us know how you deal with spam. Please keep it short and precise. Dennis Levens

I have been using FTP for many years and in most of my experience a fast site, especially one using ProFTPD will respond almost as soon as you say connect. I have 3 other ftp accounts at different ISPs and when I click connect the login process starts right away. HOWEVER, for some reason with tch when I connect to ftp.**** the IP resolves instantly, then I go straight to Connecting, but I can usually count to almost 10 or worst case 15 seconds before the login message comes up and then my directory list shown. I would like to figure out why there is such a long pause. My internet connection is blazing fast at home with over 3mbit down and 256 up. My ping response time is consistantly below 80ms. What Is The Etc Folder In Ftp For?
dlevens replied to dlevens's topic in CPanel and Site Maintenance
I had both checks set in cpanel for anonymous ftp but when I try to login as annonymous I get error trying to set permissions. So it appears anon ftp is not working. I was connecting to ftp.**** port 21 clicked on annonymous for login settings. Still no go. No big I guess, but curious why those two settings are in cpanel under annonymous setup. Dennis -
When logged in with the main email account (your tch cpanel login id) I get to see all folders for all email accounts I have created. What I don't understand is why do I see two inboxes for each account I make? I.E. In my master folder list (seen from my main email account) I see the following - INBOX (this is my main default inbox) - Joe |--- inbox (this is joe@**** inbox) - **** |--- Joe |--- drafts |--- inbox |--- Junk E-mail |--- sent items |--- trash Why do I see two inboxes for Joe? And why does the Joe under **** have all of his folders but the Joe at the root just have an inbox? a little confused, Dennis Levens

Neomail, Horde, And Squirrelmail - Use All 3?
dlevens replied to dlevens's topic in CPanel and Site Maintenance
When I add a redirect I cannot use https, it only allows me to use http so I can only redirect to the unsecure login? Also when I redirect to www.yoursite.com:2095/horde/index.php it asks me for my username and password but when I login it takes me to the horde login screen and autofills out my the same info I just typed, so I then have to click login again. So I have two questions: 1. How do I redirect to the sercure login when the redirects cpanel page has http:// as the only choice and no https:// 2. How do I setup a redirect to log straight into horde so I do not have to click twice. I realize I am still on typing my info once for the username and password, but I am hoping to bypass clicking to login twice. Hope this makes sense, Dennis -
What Is The Etc Folder In Ftp For?
dlevens replied to dlevens's topic in CPanel and Site Maintenance
ah ok, thanks for the info. I assume they are also safe to delete? Dennis -
What are the files in this folder for? I see a few subdomain folders like somename.**** of test redirects or subdomains that I made and then deleted, but these folders are still in my etc folder. There is also some passwd files quota and shadow files. I am not sure what this folder is used for or what the files are, if someone can enlighten me I would greatly appreciate it. Dennis
