  1. Thanks for the info. Looks promising for TCH. Unfortunately, I don't seem to be able to make it work with my old host :-( Can't find the options described in the tutorial...
  2. I've got Spam assasin at another host, but each time I enable it, nothing seems to happen! Soo... I wonder if it WORKS right out of the box here? I really need to start shifting the filtering to happening on the server instead of on my own PC...
  3. Or if you anticipate going over regularly, you could upgrade your account to the next plan?
  4. You're so screwed! Unless you are Happy! Hosting Network, Inc., and unless they give over control over the domain to you without any trouble.
  5. Quick question: Is it possible to have moderators who won't appear to be moderators? In effect moderators who don't want to appear to be moderators to the users? EDIT: Think I answered my own question by reading this thread: http://forums.invisionpower.com/index.php?...opic=116724&hl=
  6. OK, thanks. Guess it'll be invision board then.
  7. Another issue. With Invision Power Board, is it just new topics that can be moderated, or can I hold off on individual posts in that thread being visible too?
  8. I've been surfing the net now for an hour or two, and it seems like it's currently down to either Talkshop or Invision. Invision is free on TCH? Like I don't have to pay for it?
  9. mmm, I need a board type thingy, where the posts aren't expanded (like they usually are on a blog). It should be pre-moderated, open for guests, and some members should be allowed to posts without pre-moderation. And it should be less comprehensive than the really big forum types, in that it won't power a busy forum.
  10. And again, that whole board is way overkill for my use. Maybe a blog would be better? Geeklog? On second thought, it doesn't look right either. I quite like Talkshop, even though it's VERY basic and often a pain. Something similar in PHP would be good, but with way better admin tools.
  11. I need to install a forum where posts need to be approved before they appear on the forum. This is not a high volume forum - few posts, though higher traffic. There's a pre-approval mod for phpBB, but that whole forum is overkill for my use. I also found Talkshop (cgi), and http://phorum.org/ (PHP). Can I use any of these here, or are there other good choices for me?
  12. Hmmmm.... Remember that virus that sent mails to all sorts of addys on your domain name? That was a real bummer. With catch all e-mail, I couldn't filter it out. But maybe you've got filters that would handle it some other way? I saw something about filtering attachment file types.
  13. Make sure you encode your e-mail address on your website so you won't get as much spam (nothing is foolproof, some spammers seems to collect addresses by HAND or forwards!). Formmail type scripts with the address encoded inside the script is one way. Another is something like this: http://www.dynamicdrive.com/emailriddler/ If that one isn't enough, please advise!
  14. I went through something similar a while ago when I wanted to read my e-mails through wap on my cell phone. Not yet a TCH customer, but this should work here too: I get loads of spam on one of my primary accounts that I use a forwarder on. So I needed an account that would filter spam. Tried Hotmail. The Hotmail spam filtering is done by analyzing the SMTP server connecting to their server. So that broke the filtering. Plus it doesn't work with wap except through third party services Settled on Yahoo. Their filtering isn't broken even when you forward through another server. The filtering is obviously done in some other way. I had to fish out an e-mail from ONE friend from the bulk folder, and of course plenty of mail doesn't get filtered. Apart from that it's absolutely wonderful. Wap works great too. BTW, if you want to try the same thing: wap.yahoo.com There are also different country portals, just check Google for wap yahoo. Another thing, make sure you use GPRS (only slightly newer phones) and check what you'll be paying for traffic.
  15. So in my case I need to point that domain to a one page site somewhere else? Take into consideration that this is a page that got exactly 4 visitors so far this month, 18 total last month (including spiders), and the DNS is served by some freebie DNS service.
  16. A related question: I have a domain I point to ONE page on my main site. It's there just to act as a redirect, because I haven't developed that domain, I'm just keeping it like that for safe keeping more or less and to redirect the occasional visitor. There's almost no traffic (5-10 hits a month), and most of that is bots checking if the domain is actually up (not up for someone else to snap up). The domain is directed there via one of those services that redirects DNS to anywhere you specify. Could I still do that when/if I move my site to your service? It would be inconvenient to point it somewhere else, but doable, I suppose. The line of questions in this thread leads me to ask this question, NOW rather than after the fact.
  17. As long as it hides the e-mail address inside the script, so there's NO mention of it on the form page, I'm happy. Otherwise I'll keep the other one, thank you. I'll be happy to rename it something ridiculous EDIT: Looks like it does hide the address. I'll check it out when the time comes.
  18. OK, thanks for the reply. Seems we are on at the same time, not seeing each other's latest posts before replying! Yes, you almost always get a few from the previous month on properly configured systems. As long as there are no gaps, that's fine Looks like I'll be bookmarking the forum while planning the move, before I make a final decision. Might see more of me here, whenever I think of something else to ask about! BTW, just found a really good formmail thingy: http://nms-cgi.sourceforge.net/ Looks secure to me, as long as the recipient is properly configured INSIDE the script, and it's tight enough with the options.
  19. With a big site, the excercise of moving it is a lot of stress. I've got lots of cgi scripts and other stuff that needs to be planned - what do I keep, and what do I switch around. I'd like to find out as much as possible about the new host before I actually join. I've got a few more months before it's time to move. I'd appreciate a double check like I asked for in my earlier post. If your logs are too big, you could process them with analog or another program that gives you the start and stop times.
  20. And you checked the start date/time and end time? For several consecutive month? Just checking to see that there are no gaps. Sick and tired of gaps... :-(
  21. Yes, I know that. I have cpanel at another host. The issue for me is if the archiving actually WORKS at totalchoice. It clearly doesn't at my old host. EDIT: I should note that the feature that doesn't work properly is exactly the one you provided in the screenshot. It gives me about 6 days worth of logs towards the end of the month, but not including the last day of the month. And when does it archive each month? At the end, near the end or just after the end of the month? We're talking about a domain with about 5 gigabyte of traffic. A gzipped log file for one month would be around 10-12 megabytes. I know I can download them through FTP, so that should work. AS LONG AS the archived files contain the whole month.
  22. I've heard good things about Totalchoice. But my dealbreaker (after some bad experience) is the raw access logs. I need to be able to download them after the month is over. I know it's a feature of cpanel, but I have experience with cpanel (another host) where I only get maybe a week's worth of log through raw log manager - something doesn't work. So, what can you offer me to make sure I can preserve my logs and download them when I have the time (within the next month)?
