I thought so...that's good because I run an online antiques/collectibles store. SSL always makes the customers feel safer
-
I already signed up for an account but I never really thought to ask...I coulda swore I saw it somewhere but I want ot make sure....do you support shared ssl?
-
well I've decided to give tch a go. my main focus has been on my store lately and I'm a little fed up with hostultra's lack of support. here goes nothin'....
-
don't get me wrong...I'm still weighing the pro/cons of opening an account with you guys. I'll just have to sacrifice one of my websites for the time being if I do. I'm just not sure if I want to do that.

That was actually a quite horrible answer. Bandwidth/server load, etc has nothing to do with what domain is typed in the address bar to get to the subdomain. It's that simple. And you wouldn't lose money - you'd make money since you offer a domain registration service. It makes absolutely no difference what domain name they type in the browser as long as all traffic and all files do not take up any more space than the plan they purchased allows for. www.**** hosted with a limit of 5.5 GB and 500MB is the same as www.my2nddomain.com and www.**** pointed at 2 different subdomains with a limit of 5.5 GB and 500 MB or www.sub.**** and www.**** with a limit of 5.5 GB and 500 MB it makes absolutely NO difference what is typed in the address bar. data transfer is data transfer and disk space is disk space. it appears to me that you simply dont want people to use their entire allocated transfer/disk space by having different sites within the same account that's a cock & bull answer to "why you dont allow domains--->subdomains"

Not sure if anyone is reading this post anymore, BUT.... My Site is built on osCommerce. Modified slightly on the user end and quite a bit on the back end. You can check mine out if you want...might help determine if it would be right for you. It's live so don't place any "test" orders....serious orders are always welcome though Thumbs Up

Based on all of the forums/threads started questioning the subdomain pointing issue, I can see this is going to be a major turn off for many people, including myself. My purpose, as I'm sure are many others', is to have a small business with several service "arms" and individual domain names for each appropriate site. It is not beneficial, and is actually detrimental, to have multiple accounts just so I can have multiple domains. Sure, I can get a reseller account but I'm not really a reseller at all. I just want to host a small set of sites from one location, and they do not take up nearly the amount of space allocated to even the smallest reseller account. I have a very small online store with low traffic. I don't ever intend for it to grow much more, except maybe to upgrade from the $5 plan to the $10 plan down the road, for the bandwidth moreso than the disk space. My one site is a simple informative site with a few email addresses and links and a brief overview of services I provide. The other is a VERY small osCommerce store with few products and a tiny database. I had to register two domains for the same reason TCH changed its name from *****. Target Audience. It would be very confusing, and maybe even hard to remember, to type in www.cdi-ink.com/shop (for example) to reach my online store when it's called CDI Buy!©. It's far easier to remember www.cdi-buy.com. On the other hand, it would be hard to remember www.cdi-buy.com/imaging (or some such thing) to get to CDI, Ink Imaging Services. cdi-buy doesn't sound anything like an imaging website. People tend to remember everything before the .com and leave off the rest. All that being said, I can conclude that although you have excellent customer support (from what I hear) and reliable hosting (based upon these forums and statistical analysis), not permitting domain pointing to subdomains is going to turn off a lot of potential long term clients, or as you like to call them "family members".

ok that makes sense. my current host doesn't care how many subdomains you have though as long as you keep within your bandwidth/space (otherwise they charge you for the extra as do you guys) this policy is the only thing keeping me from signing up with you right this second. everything else looks great but I just need to have the 2 sites and as I've said before they aren't big enough to be worth opening a reseller or 2 separate accounts. One is just a few html pages (I think I only have about 6 right now) and the other is my online store, neither of which generate much traffic right now - only from people I harass to look at it the other thing is that they are both MY sites, BOTH are subsidiaries of the parent company - Custom Digital Imaging, Ink. it's not like I am hosting 2 completely independent and unrelated sites. One is CDI, Ink - Photography & Imaging Services while the other is CDI Buy!© - Online Store. Separate entities in a way, yet they are linked because CDI Buy!© is a way for people to order portrait packages from CDI, Ink's Photography Sessions. It just so happens to also be a store for antiques, collectibles, etc. It was never intended to grow into that but it did so I had to give it a separate name & one that was appropriate to the items in stock. It's all still a one man (me) operation though - not some giant corporate entity.

I thought the new AUP was supposed to be more "relaxed": and seem to be contradictory and yet they were both in the exact same post by Bill. Seems to me the first rule is more on the loose side of the fence than the second since it's less specific. I don't see why you would not allow domain pointing to subdomains. It's not like the load is greater or less because you still have to stay within your bandwidth and data storage limits anyways. A server wouldnt get "bogged down" any more with one domain or 1,000 domains with different sites as long as they have the proper storage and data transfer capacties which are only limited by the plan you choose.
-
ok well that makes up my mind. I'm staying with my current host despite the occasional downtime.

so basically you're saying if I have www.cdi-ink.com hosted by you I cannot have www.cdi-buy.com hosted by you in the same account unless they point to the same place? Keep in mind my store is only an oscommerce store installation in a subfolder that happens to have its own domain name pointed to that folder. Today I registered yet another domain for my store so if I cannot use them with you guys I'll just stay where I am. I need to maintain both sites but the one doesn't take up enough space or get enough traffic to warrant getting a reseller or separate account. Thanks anyway.

go to registerfly.com and you can register a domain for $9.99 a year and use it for email only. don't mean to "redirect" customers but that's where I registered my domain and I think you can simply register one without pointing it anywhere so that if someone types it in, it will say "page not found" just like a non-registered domain

I've got another concern now as I was reading through the forums. I saw it says Currently I have www.cdi-ink.com as my main site for Photography Services and my Online Store is set at www.cdi-ink.com/shop with www.cdi-buy.com pointed to it (ie the addon domain cdi-buy.com to subdirectory shop.myusername.myhost.com) I'm concerned that this is not allowed, based upon my comprehension of the forums. Am I understanding it correctly or does that only concern multiple people using the same hosting account?

Thanks Don..I like your name too My current host is horrible...they were great at first but lately they have had random moments of being down and that affects not only my online store but my ebay listings and my email as well since I list through my store and don't use free email services anymore. Not a good thing if you ask me. I've already created backups of everything - I do this quite often - so the process of backing up and restoring isn't an issue. I'm just wondering how big of a hassle it will be to reupload my files and database to another host.
-
would it be posssible to just create backups of everything, including my database(s) and then upload them as a "restore"

I have a small business website, www.cdi-buy.com complete with an oscommerce store, databases, etc. I've spent many many weeks building it up to where it is and I don't want to lose all of those products and site design. I'm wondering how I would go about transferring it all over since you don't have Fantastico installed in your cPanel control panel.
