I was looking into this before the recent flurry of excitement. My main concern hasn't been so much the vulnerability to attacks (since that wasn't big news at the time) but the statement in my (dnsreport.com) reports that: In fact, that's what started my research - the intermittent episodes of "cannot find page on server" errors for both myself and some of my site visitors (lasting from a couple of hours to a couple of days), no matter which browser was being used. I didn't realize when I chose my domain names that a .us TLD would make the sites more prone to this kind of problem because they don't have the "glue" that .com names do. I don't want to change domains at this point in the game, but knowing that my sites are among the first to be affected by too many look-up requests on the server gives me an added interest in the topic. I really don't want to change hosts. It's a headache that I don't need right now, and since my site traffic drops over the summer there haven't been any access problems lately that I know of. I'm very glad to know that open servers will soon be gone at TCH, and will hold my breath and hang on for now.

Has the open/recursive server policy been reconsidered/changed with the current cache poisoning alert? I got the same "Fail" message when checking my DNS awhile back, sent a support ticket to TCH and was told it couldn't have anything to do with my intermittant site access problems. I've learned since then that open and recursive servers can cause slow loading and even "cannot find page" errors if a page takes too long to load, which is precisely the problem with my sites. I was told to "run, not walk" if my host didn't understand why the system wasn't a good one. I didn't run, but especially with the new security risk for recursive servers, I'm planning to walk when my accounts come up for renewal next month - unless the policy's been changed. I apologize if the policy has been changed and I didn't see the accouncement.

Thanks--That does answer my question.

KW doesn't necessarily have to answer this, but the question comes from something he said over on the CSB forum when someone asked about shopping carts. The free shoppping cart at TCH is "just" the software, right? I've been thinking of using CCNow for a new site (I've never needed a shopping cart before), mostly because I can't afford to shell out the money for a merchant account. I'm assuming that TCH doesn't have a complete package like CCNow or Paypal--But after reading KW's post (saying the only reason he used CCNow for his wife's site was because he set it up before he came to TCH), I thought I'd check. --Trudy

Ah-ha! See, I never would have thought of it being on the clipboard, because to me that's only the limbo where text exists between "cut" and "paste." Thanks ! I haven't had a chance to try this yet, and probably won't until the weekend as it's a heavy week at work. (I can post here during a spare minute at the office, but can only use CSB on my home computer.) I have a couple of programs that resize pictures (including bitmaps), so I'd think at least one of them should work for this. -

Hi, Richard & Turtle-- I don't see anything happen when I hit alt+printscreen. I know from making screencaps with my DVD program that the screencapture is probably getting created and being saved somewhere, but I've looked in what I thought were the "likely places" and haven't found anything. Any hints on where it might be hiding? If there were some way I could do this through my DVD program, I'd know what do to get the capture (press the "p" key) and where the bitmap would be saved (capture folder in the DVD program). But outside the DVD program I don't know what's getting saved and where it's being stored. After you have the screen capture, the Help menu says to crop off the title bar--does that mean the top part of the computer screen, or the title on the web design? My hp "hardware" help says to use alt+printscreen to capture an image of the "currently active window" and to press only printscreen to capture the entire screen. Would that affect what's going to need to be cropped? And when the instructions say to take all text out of the borders, etc., do they mean even things such as "Home Page Title" or just text that's been specifically added? BTW, the only button I see on my keyboard that seems to be a candidate for "printscreen" is one that says "PrtScn SysRq". Is that the right one, or is there something else I should be using? Gee, and you guys thought this was simple ! Any help would be appreciated--I'm really at a loss here. Thanks. --Trudy -

Since the most recent post in this thread is a few weeks old, this may be a moot point, but just in case... I have none of the technical knowledge the other people who've given advice do. I don't know a lick of HTML. But I'm an incurable "putzer" when I get a new toy to play with, and for the last few months my most entertaining toy has been the CSB "Edit Page Layout" function. I start with a built-in CSB web design such as "white," save it as a .tld file with a new name, and play with it from there. You can change borders, fonts, text colors, background color on each page area (or use an image instead), decide what colors you want your hyperlinks to be, insert a logo you want to appear on each page... and other things that don't come to mind right now, and I'm sure many things that I haven't discovered yet (I think this will give me many happy months of putzing ). And you can make your homepage completely different from your other pages if you want, just by editing the "home page" page layout. CSB's Help menu is very, ummm... helpful, and much of what's on the Help menu is now in the user's guide that was referred to earlier. I think someone who's creative and has a design background could come up with a fabulous-looking website using the web design features in CSB. Here's an amazing site I go to for just about any kind of image I'm looking for (and many that I don't know I'm looking for until I see them). Their collection of backgrounds alone is worth every pop-behind ad you have to endure : http://www.pics.am/ --Trudy (And, yes, Richard, I'm still trying to figure out how to do that bitmap thingy--did I mention I don't know much tech stuff ?--so I can make some of my designs available for other CSB users to download.) -
Okay--deep breath--I got home from work and have an email from the help desk letting me know they're working on the situation. I'm not in a big hurry to have everything "fixed"--but I was in a *huge* hurry to let someone know there could be a problem, so I wouldn't come across as a "deadbeat" on my first order here ! But as long as I know the billing folks are aware of it, I'm not too worried .

I'm posting this here because it seems to be the quickest way to get help (operator was off-line; I did send an email there). You remember my questions about two accounts? Here's what's happened. Got the two domain names registered. I used the option to debit my bank account with no problems. I went through process to register for two webhosting accounts, planning to use the debit payment method again--but when I got to the payment options it wasn't there! The credit card I have registered at Paypal is no longer operative, so I went to Paypal to change my primary source to my checking account, but Paypal says it could take several days to get my account listed. I got out of the registration system, thinking I'd canceled my purchase of the two webhosting plans, but invoices for them showed up in my email. Bottom line is--when TCH tries to get payment from Paypal, it will be turned down because I don't have any source of funding available. I went to support options, thinking I could phone something at TCH immediately and get the transaction stopped, but the operator was off line. Help! Can I cancel the webhosting sign-up? Is there any way I can pay with direct bank account debit as I did for the domain names? I don't want to turn up as a "non-payer" at TCH!! Thanks!! (I'm running off to the office now--won't be able to access my home email, but I will be able to get to this page.) --tg

Thanks for the responses. I qualify in any and all ways for a .us . I asked about that one because a domain name I was thinking of using isn't available with .com, but is available with .us. --tg

Well, this is a different topic, but since you asked... This is a new experience for me, because I've always used free webhosting. That means, of course, I've never had a domain name. Do I sign up for a webhosting plan first, then register a domain name (I'd do so through the TCH site)? Or the other way around? Or does anybody care ? I know this is probably a really stupid question, but I'm sure I could come up with even more stupid ones without any problem at all (I did try to find an answer before asking here, but my questions are probably ones no one else needs to ask .) Oh, yeah, here's an even more stupid one! (I know you were hoping .) What does the .us designation mean? I'm guessing it's us as in U.S.A., but I've never seen it used before. Thanks for your help. --tg

I'd like to ask that same question from the "other end"--I don't currently have any websites at TCH (I registered for this forum so I could ask this question.) -- I'm thinking of moving two websites to TCH and would need two different accounts for them. Are there any tips to help the process run smoothly? Is it better to sign up for both accounts at once, or to move one website to TCH, then wait a month or two before moving the other one? What's less likely to cause problems?
