    Php Upgrades

TCH Family, We would like to announce, starting Friday, February 10th, 2017. web hosting accounts will begin upgrades to a new version of PHP. In order for smooth transitions and customer satisfaction, please be aware of the upcoming changes. This change will most likely affect your web site. Due to the widespread effect this may have on our client base, and in an effort to offer the fastest support possible, we have chosen to stagger these updates to our server farm throughout the month of February. Updates about your server will be posted in its appropriate forum thread. This can be found by navigating to the forums, and locating the thread labeled your server name. We will be offering the following versions: Apache 2.4, PHP 5.4, PHP 5.5, PHP 5.6, and PHP 7.0 After being upgraded, users will be able to access the MultiPHP editor located in their cPanel and select from the above options listed. Furthermore, we will be implementing a more advanced, and efficient MultiPHP Manager.. We hope for a fast, and productive month of these changes. If you have any questions, or concerns. Feel free to Inquire to us about them. As we want to make this a quick and painless process! The developers of PHP announced in March of 2013 that PHP 5.3 would enter its End of Life Cycle. If this may come as a surprise to you, please reference our blog and social media postings dating as far back as of May 2014. If your website runs an outdated version of any software, such as PHP 5.3, this can potentially put your web hosting account at risk. Taking this into account, we are officially ending support for PHP 5.3. If you have questions or comments, this can be discussed on our forums. Which you can find by going to the following link Thank you. View the full article

    Joomla Zero Day Exploit

The Joomla security team has fixed a highly critical zero-day bug, which allows an attacker to take full control of an affected site’s administration area. The vulnerability affects Joomla versions 1.5 to 3.4.5, it involves an object injection vulnerability via the HTTP user agent that leads to a full remote command execution. You can determine your Joomla version by logging into your administrator area, the version will be displayed either in the top right hand corner or at the bottom of your administrator panel. This is a serious vulnerability that can be easily exploited and is already in the wild. If you are using Joomla, it is essential that you upgrade to the latest version For EOL versions a patch has been provided which can be found at the link below, however we strongly recommend clients upgrade to the latest version as soon as possible. 8. Many of you recently awoke to the sudden issue of not being able to send mail. The issue you were experiencing with your email was due to the “POP before SMTP” feature being automatically disabled by a cPanel update. This feature allows you to continue to send mail for a time period after successfully receiving/checking your email. POP before SMTP is antiquated alternative method of authentication that was never officially supported nor very secure. If you are still using this method, we recommend you enable SMTP Authentication in your mail client. We have now reverted this change and enabled the POP before SMTP feature to allow users time to make changes to thier mail client. We do currently have a time frame for how long we will continue to keep this feature active, but we will announce before it is removed. View the full article

    The Unlimited Game

Web Site running slow? Maybe your unlimited hosting is not really unlimited! Choosing the right hosting company to host your business or personal web site can be a daunting task. So many Hosting companies in the market place are misrepresenting their services by offering unlimited hosting. Truth of the matter is Unlimited Hosting does not exist. It is a sales gimmick to lure customers in by offering them everything for little or nothing. In reality, everything has a limit. These unscrupulous hosts bet on the fact that the vast majority of the clients that they trick into signing up with them will in fact never use very many resources. The clients that use a lot of resources are kicked to the curb and terminated without notice. This is done by citing the Terms of Service (TOS) which spells out in very fine terms what can be used. This is a highlight from a TOS from such a company: 10.2. Enforced resource limits for shared and reseller packages: 10% CPU Usage 5% Memory Usage (or 512 MB) 50 Running Processes 15 Minute Max Execution Time 100,000 Total Inodes 500 outgoing email messages per 60 minute period (all excess messages will be discarded and not delivered) This is horrible considering the fact that when these poor clients signed up for service they were told everything was unlimited. At TotalChoice we do not place limits on our clients, because we do NOT oversell our servers. Unlimited hosts can stay in business because they depend on people not using the resources that they purchase. At TCH we want our clients to use the resources they bought and we leave it on the table for them to use at any time they need. This is why our hosting packages are very defined and the client knows what they are buying, it is their money after all. Choose wisely my friends. Happy Hosting Bill Kish View the full article
  10. When it comes to choosing hosting for your business, it is important to choose wisely. Dedicated web hosting is simply the best type of hosting you can get for your website, if you are serious about your site. It will give you the entire server as your own resources, the ability to customize nearly everything, and you will be able to handle more traffic than any type of shared and VPS hosting. Advantages: * Dedicated web hosting can handle a higher volume of page requests than shared hosting or VPS hosting. This is because all the resources are yours and your hosting will be much faster. You will have faster site load times and visitors will be able to see your website or blog without any issues. * Another big advantage of using a dedicated server is the ability to customize the security. Security is a very important part of your hosting. You will have to make the decision if you can risk being hacked by sharing a server with hundreds of other hosting accounts. Even with VPS hosting you are still sharing a server. VPS hosting will give you some custom security features, but it is not like dedicated hosting. * When a server is shared between several clients, the host cannot allow any of them to access to certain features. However, when the server is used solely by your website you will be granted much greater access allowing you more control over the server. This affords businesses much more flexibility. A dedicated server means you will have less to worry about and you will be able to make more money from your website. Dedicated server hosting may seem like a more expensive choice, but if you are looking for reliable hosting that offers all of the benefits, it is something that is well worth the investment. 11. Is a Dedicated Server the right choice for you? Considering a dedicated server? A dedicated server is just that, it’s fully dedicated to you and you alone. All resources including CPU’s, memory and hard drives are dedicated to the specific client and the client has complete control over the server. Many clients have outgrown shared hosting accounts and need to move onto dedicated server plans. A dedicated client can customize the software or choose an operating system, after all it is a dedicated server. For the client that is not tech savvy, there is also TotalChoice’s world famous Fully Managed Servers. TCH handles every aspect of your server. We start with the move of your domains and data and then into monitoring and maintaining your TCH server. We have both managed and unmanaged dedicated servers available. Another reason to consider a dedicated server is scalability. As your business grows you can add servers without the headache of worrying about space at your facility or the hiring of additional support. All these perks make a dedicated server the ideal choice! Contact us today and we will be more than happy to discuss your hosting needs and custom build a dedicated server to fit your needs. View the full article

    Php Updates

TotalChoice Hosting currently supports three separate PHP versions across all of its shared/reseller servers. The majority of these servers are running PHP 5.2, 5.3, and 5.4 with 5.3 being the default, with a small percentage running on PHP 5.3, 5.4, and 5.5. Now that PHP 5.4 is just as widely supported as PHP 5.3 and with PHP 5.5 not far behind it, we are going to start rolling out some changes. These changes are required to improve the security and maintain the high performance our of servers and customer websites. What does this mean for you as a web hosting customer at TotalChoice Hosting? We will be removing support for PHP 5.2 as of September 15, 2014, for security reasons. The end of life for PHP 5.2 occurred nearly 4 years ago and we encourage customers using it to update their scripts to meet at least PHP 5.3 standards. We intend to fully support and offer PHP 5.3 to customers through January 2015 at a minimum, at which point we will review it again, as it will only receive security updates through July 2014. That means customers will have at least 3 PHP versions at their disposal for the next 6 months, PHP 5.3.x, PHP 5.4.x and PHP 5.5.x. We will be rolling out PHP 5.4 as the default PHP handler from July 15 – Sept 15, as it is quickly becoming the new standard expected by web applications and customers alike. When the default PHP handler is changed from 5.3 to 5.4, all customers that don’t currently have a special htaccess entry, will be on PHP 5.4. We understand that this can cause issues for some customers, so we will be rolling out a new feature to your cPanel account to assist you. If you decide you don’t want PHP 5.4, you can easily change to the other PHP versions with our new PHP Select option. As support for FrontPage was dropped by Microsoft in 2006 and is no longer supported by cPanel, we will finally be discontinuing FrontPage Support on our shared servers. We have maintained this limited service as a custom module for a while now, but it is not compatible with the newer versions of Apache (http server). We recommend customers still using FrontPage to publish content with a different method, such as FTP or WebDAV. We understand that any change can bring unintended consequences and may present an inconvenience to our family of clients, however keeping servers and software up to date with current software versions is something that must be done. As always, we thank you for choosing TotalChoice and we will be posting updates as we proceed with the roll out. View the full article
  13. This is one question I get asked quite often. As everyone knows, web hosts are a dime a dozen and it appears everyone and their brother opens up a web hosting company. In the hosting trade we refer to these fly by night companies as “Summer Hosts”. Do not be fooled by these hosts. They may have a flashy cool website but it is the service that separates us from them. Here are a few good things to look out for when choosing a web hosting company :: 1. Real time Status Pages hosted in a completely separate network and data center. The status pages at TCH are just that. I am talking status pages that show server loads and bandwidth utilization. The real time TCH Status Pages can be found here. 2. Up time reports for both network and each individual server. This is something most hosts simply will not publish. Is this because they are scared or embarrassed to present the numbers. Not at TCH. We publish up-times for each server and our network. No hiding behind false promises. The TCH Up-Time pages can be found here. 3. Public Forums. A host with nothing to hide allows users to publish unedited comments and reviews on a forum. TCH was one of the first hosting companies to offer a Forum for clients and guests to freely post and review our services. Our Forums can be found here. 4. Staff Directory. A host that outsources their support to some call center in another country will never discuss their staffing or allow clients to view photos and bios of the staff. At TCH we pride ourselves in no outsourcing. Every staff member works directly for TCH and we outsource nothing! Our staffing profile page can be found here. 5. Twenty four hour support. Yes, can you really comprehend a web hosting firm that does not staff their support team on a 24/7/365 basis. It is common place for this to happen. If you think about it, one of the most expensive parts of running a web hosting company is payroll to the staff. At TCH we are fully staffed all the time , no matter when. True 24/7/365 support is available and online. You can test this statement here. 6. Network and Longevity. Does your host own all of their own equipment? Most hosts simply rent their servers from other providers. Not at TCH. We own everything from the Fiber to the Switch and right down to the server. The best part is TCH is a debt free company and we have been in the business since 1999. We are here for the long run and you can trust TCH. These are just a few things that separate the good hosting companies from the “Summer Hosts.” Happy Hosting and good luck in your search for a new web host. View the full article
  14. TotalChoice has been in the web hosting for over 14 years now. During this time we have never offered many sales on our products. Sure we would do an occasional sale but nothing like what we are going to offer for the next 30 days on our reseller plans. Has TCH gone totally insane? Well not really. To be honest, we overbuilt our infrastructure and have quite a bit of reseller server space available. Yea, we went crazy building new servers, but hey those things can happen when dealing with new technology. These must be cheapo servers, overloaded with users and hosting unlimited domains, right? No not so fast, these are the same servers we sold yesterday. In fact, lets us talk about what these servers have under the hood, shall we? Each server has 16 cores of amazingly fast AMD Opteron 3.2ghz CPU power. We use the fastest storage devices available and place all the drives into a very fast and reliable RAID 10 Raid Container. Couple this with very fast 1800Mhz ECC RAM and these servers are poised to provide our clients with the fastest, most responsive web sites on the planet. Take no prisoners here guys, these servers are the real deal. No desktop hardware that wants to grow up and be a server one day. No overselling allowed! 4,000 domains on a server? Not at TCH. We limit our reseller servers to 15 clients each. Period. This allows every reseller server plenty of overhead and space to grow. I dare you to ask any host to reveal how many accounts they place on reseller servers, I know what the answer would be. Web Hosting has become a industry of deceit and scam. Well not here at TCH. We oversell nothing and do not offer unlimited anything. Unless you count the support tickets, why yes those are offered unlimited style. Your reseller account will allow you to host as many domains as will fit within your space and bandwidth. You will have full access to a reseller version of WHM (web hosting manager). To even bolster on that, every domain that you add to your reseller account will be assigned its very own cPanel login. The TCH reseller accounts are a full blown gateway to becoming a Web Hosting Provider. In fact we even give your reseller account its own space. This is unheard in this business. TCH is proud of our history, our service levels and our hosting products. Why take a chance with these other companies that hide behind their Terms of Service when you can host with an Industry Leader. Yes. you can trust TCH today and in the future. To obtain your 50% discount on the Reseller Plans use the following coupon code at check out :: crazyeddie Please note, these coupons are for new clients only and only one coupon per new client may be used. Discount is valid as long as you keep that package and can not be applied to downgrades or upgrades. Offer expires 04/22/2014 Here is a link to our Reseller Ordering Pages. View the full article

    Web Hosting Account Suspended

You are sipping your morning coffee and enjoying your wonderful Tim Horton’s Donuts, life is wonderful. Your email client opens and you start progressing thru your emails and then you read it. “TotalChoice Hosting Abuse Department :: Suspension Notice for mydomain.com” Your life comes to a screeching halt. That donut no longer tastes so good and you fall into a fast state of shock. However, you calm down and read the email and follow the directions from the support team. Within a few moments your site is back on line and things in your stomach start to feel a little better. The above scenario is one that all web hosting clients could face one day. Let us take a few moments to go over some of the reasons why your account could be suspended by our admin team. Exceeding your storage and bandwidth limits. Frequently using up lots of server resources (CPU , Disk I/O and memory). Spam email messages being sent from your account. Hosting or linking to material that violates your Host’s Terms of Services. Attempting to gain unauthorized access to another customer’s account or files. Using your account to send out denial of service attacks. Hacking activities or hosting of material related to hacking. Unpaid invoices for web hosting. One of the most important things you can do as a web hosting customer is to keep your account up to date with the most recent releases of the software you have installed. Also, be sure to maintain your account with strong cPanel and Email Passwords. The vast majority of suspended accounts happen due to compromised 3rd party scripts, plugins and or weak passwords. A good majority of suspensions can be easily avoided if only the client would have taken the time to follow the above. There are many reasons why a host will suspend your account. One of the best things to do is make sure you keep a good email address on file with your host. Almost every host will send an email to the account holder informing of the suspension. It is always a good idea to make sure you use an off domain email address, this way your host can contact you even if your site is suspended. Many clients point their contact email to their cell phone so that they receive instant alerts from their host. This is a great idea! If your account is ever suspended, simply follow the instructions in the email you received from the support team and we will work with you to get your site back online as quickly as possible. While being suspended is dreadful it is not the end of the world. We put together this short video that explains the suspension in a video format, I hope you enjoy. View the full article

    Scam Alert :: Unlimited Hosting

In the market for a new web hosting account? If so, chances are, you will not have a hard time finding a new host for your website. In fact, you will, most likely, end up facing a plethora of choices. The largest scam in our industry is the “unlimited hosting” plans. It is time we debunk them and expose the liars in the web hosting industry. You do not need to be a rocket scientist to figure out that servers can not actually host anything unlimited. That would be like saying your iPod can store an unlimited amount of Justin Bieber songs. We all know that it simply is not possible. These web host that claim to offer unlimited bandwidth and disk space are hiding behind their Fair Use Policy and are out right liars. They are overselling. This is the act of selling hosting plans to clients and banking on the fact that the clients will not use the space and bandwidth. Furthermore, if the client starts using to much then the host can use their Fair Use Policy and kick the client to the curb. If you do your research, you will notice that each overselling web host claims to offer unlimited hosting, but only as per the terms of its ‘Fair Use Policy’ – which, by the way, is often different from the Terms of Use. Before signing up for these unlimited plans, it is critical that you look into the terms that apply to these accounts. I took some time to go out and look at some web hosts that offer unlimited plans. It is shocking to see the lies these hosts spew out to their customers. These are just a few limitations that can be found in their terms of service ; Using a shared account as a backup/storage device is not permitted. Any shared account using more than 20 gigs of disk space will be removed from our off site weekly backup. Run cron entries with intervals of less than 15 minutes The use of more than 25,000 inodes on any shared account may potentially result in a warning first, and if no action is taken future suspension. Every file (a webpage, image file, email, etc) on your account uses up 1 inode. Use 25% or more of system resources for longer then 30 seconds is prohibited. Broadcast or Streaming of Live Sporting Events is prohibited. Commercial Audio Streaming prohibited. Really? I thought this was unlimited everything. Unlimited disk space as long as I dont store to many files, or you will suspend me and stop taking backups? Due dilligence, walk lightly and choose a host that does not hide behind its false promises, lies and its Terms of Service or Fair Use Policy. Determine what you will be using and find a host that will give you your desired services for a reasonable price. We have put together a video that we hope better explains this entire Unlimited Myth and hope you enjoy watching it. View the full article
  17. One of the most frequent questions that is asked is what separates TotalChoice from all the other hosting companies in the marketplace. This is something that I have been thinking allot about lately. TCH is family owned and operated.Web Hosting has become a commodity. Most of the hosting companies you have read about or seen advertised are owned by large companies. In fact one large company, with a smooth 1.5 billion US dollars in debt owns many of these hosting companies. Do you really want to be just a number? Do you really want your Web Hosting company to be floating on a billion and a half dollars in debt? TCH is a 100% debt free company. We are cash based and always have been. TCH treats everyone like family, in fact my cell phone number is available and I personally take calls from clients on a daily basis. These other big hosters can not say that. Sources can be found here and here. TCH Staff members are truly family. The staff at TCH brings many years of experience to the support department every day. Most of the team has been on staff for more than 5 years. Our General Manager will be celebrating his 10 year anniversary and the Support Manager has nearly 9 years with TCH. It is this dedicated and loyalty that separates TCH from the others. Check out our staff page located here. TCH offers faster support and turn around timesDid you know that the average turn around time from the time we receive a support request until it is solved is less than 15 minutes. This is something that we are very proud of and have always attempted to maintain. Every one knows that hosting clients will need support at some point and it is our goal to give our client the quickest and most efficient support available. TCH owns all of its Servers, Switches, Routers and has its own ARIN Allocation. Many clients do not understand the importance of your hosting company owning all its own equipment. This really boils down to choice. This is part of the reason we choose to name our company TotalChoice. Owning all of our own servers and everything in between gives us much more control over every aspect of your hosting experience. For example, if a server breaks down we are not waiting on the “data center” to go unrack the server and tell us what is wrong. Since we own and maintain the servers, we control the maintenance, reliability and most importantly we control what is done to the servers. We also control our own IP space and do no rely on upstream providers for IP address allocations. View the full article

    It's Password Time!

Advice on creating very strong passwords. Creating strong passwords is part of an essential duty of any web master. This includes passwords for your email, ftp, mysql and of course cPanel user account. It only takes one weak password and some bad guy and his brute force script and next thing you know your account has been compromised. This is enough to make a good day go south in a really fast way. Here are some good tips for choosing a strong password :: Avoid using a single dictionary word. These are easily brute forced by dictionary-based scripts. Instead try choosing multiple, unrelated, words and special characters. Avoid familiar items such as names, business names or phone numbers, etc. Use a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters and numbers, avoid replacing letters with numbers – as this is predictable for any script designed to brute force your password. Ensure your password is something memorable without being obvious. Beware of computers you cannot trust, key-loggers will bypass many forms of security Using the cPanel password generator :: If you are unable to create a password then you can always turn to the Password Generator which appears in cPanel next to password change dialogues. The passwords generated through this method will not be easy to remember, so make sure you make a note of this password in a secure method. When changing any passwords in cPanel you will be offered the chance to use the Password Generator. Using Browser plugins to create your passwords :: There are several browser plugins that will create randomly generated passwords for you and will copy the password to your clipboard, allowing fast and easy password changing. I personally use pwgen – Password Generator 0.5.1 for Firefox. You can find more information on this firefox plugin here. Thank you for taking time to read about passwords today, I am confident that rotating your passwords and keeping them strong and secure can go a long way to protect your account and the TCH servers. 19. Hello TCH Family, As part of our ongoing effort to continue offering the most reliable and cost effective hosting on the planet, we are making changes to the way that we will be communicating with our clients. One of the most requested items was to allow our clients to pick and choose what forms of communications they receive from us. Therefore, effective as of this blog post we will be maintaining several different emailing lists that will allow us to communicate to our clients. These lists will consist of news, maintenance, incidents and advisories. This will allow clients to unsubscribe from one list but not another. We have opted to move away from the fancy HTML based emails and we will be utilizing simple plain text emails to communicate. We received quite a bit of feed back from the HTML based newsletters that we were sending and all of the feedback was negative. If you are a client of TCH, your name and email address will be placed on each unique mailing list that we maintain. If you prefer not to receive updates from us please use the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email. This will of course be a one time removal request for that specific email list. Thank you for your business and we hope this helps in our efforts to better communicate with our hosting family. Happy Hosting! View the full article
  20. cPanel is the leading control panel software company period. Without exception cPanel has been setting the bar with their product for many years. TCH has been a avid supporter and has been involved with the cPanel Partner NOC program for many years. This month cPanel invited the management team of TCH to enjoy dinner and a discuss our product lines It was a most enjoyable meeting. Most notable to me was being able to finally extend a handshake to a man that I have been dealing with for over 13 years. Mario, is our account manager at cPanel has been dealing with TCH well before cPanel. After dinner cPanel presented us with a very nice plaque that will be finding a new home on our office walls. I am really pleased to be able to be part of the cPanel program for this long and look forward to many more years. Cheers to the fine folks at cPanel. View the full article
  21. Hey all, this is a write up on what, in my opinion, seems to possibly be one of the fastest drives to ever hit the consumer market. Disclaimer: The following review is my personal opinion and does not reflect TCH in any way. (Photo Credit: Samsung.com) At A Glance, The Samsung 840 Pro seems to be one of the fastest SSD’s on the consumer market, but this comes with a pretty hefty price tag. The Samsung 840 Pro in the 256 GB denomination seems to come in at around $250 ($139 for the 128 GB, and around $500 for the 512GB). This price tag may seem a bit hefty considering you may be able to pull slightly slower speeds out of cheaper drives. However, something different about this SSD compared to others is that it is the first and only SSD on the market with a 5-Year Warranty. Considering that a lot of SSD’s will die after a 4-year period this is astounding that Samsung will back their product for 5-years. The Packaging, The packaging was astounding, surprisingly it came in a yellow-bubble wrap padded envelope which is more eco-friendly. Inside the yellow-envelope came a thin small black box branded Samsung 840 Pro 256GB and inside the box came two instruction manuals, a set of stickers to put on your laptop if you please, the Samsung SSD Magician Software (Windows compatible only), and a black plastic frame holding the SSD. After A …, After a week, The first drive that was sent to me completely failed, it was dead on arrival. After contacting Newegg for the RMA they responded the same day, payed for my shipping label, and I sent it in soon after, the same day they received it they contacted me and told me that they would be replacing it and sent out a new SSD in the next day or so and it got here a week later. Even though I wish the first SSD would have been functional Newegg handled it wonderfully. The new drive works great and is extremely fast in my MacBook Pro, there seems to be no problems so far, however a few applications have been a bit glitchy after being cloned, such as the video chat client ooVoo. After A few months, The drive works great and is insanely fast! I have not had one single problem since! Performance, For 6gb/s SATA or SATA III, the promised performance is as below, however most reviewers have benchmarked the drive’s speeds above this. I, for one, can’t confirm or deny this because I currently am using a computer with SATA II which brings me speeds of around 206MB/s Write, and 268MB/s Read. Capacity 128 GB 256 GB 512 GB Model MZ-7PD128 MZ-7PD256 MZ-7PD512 Type of Drive Solid State Drive (SSD) Form Factor 2.5-inch (Reduced 7mm thickness for use with ultraportables and netbooks) For Use With Desktop and laptop PCs (including ultraportables and netbooks) and workstations Interface SATA 6Gbits/s (backwards compatible with SATA 3Gbits/s and SATA 1.5Gbits/s) Random Read Speeds 97K IOPS 100K IOPS Sequential Read/Write Speeds 530 MB/s / 390 MB/s 540 MB/s / 520 MB/s Controller 3-Core Samsung MDX Controller Type of NAND Flash 2xnm Samsung Toggle DDR 2.0 NAND Flash Memory (400Mbps) Type of Cache 256MB Samsung LPDDR2 SDRAM 512MB Samsung LPDDR2 SDRAM Included Software Samsung Magician 4.x, Samsung Smart Data Migration software Dimensions 0.28 by 2.75 by 3.94 in. (H x W x D) Warranty 5-Year Limited The Bottom Line, This drive has so far been fantastic, other than the failed drive I see little to no flaws with the Samsung 840 Pro so far. Even though the price may be quite large considering the price of SSD’s currently, this drive is worth it! With its crazy fast speeds and its industry standard breaking warranty, the Samsung 840 Pro is a promising competitor to any other SSD on the consumer market! View the full article

    Network Upgrades Restarting

Hello TCH Family, Over the past few weeks we have been working behind the scenes with our Hardware Vendors to complete acquisition of several new Core Routers. I am happy that this phase of the project is completed and the new hardware is sitting on the floor of our Troy, MI Data Center. Over the next couple days we will be starting the process of preparing the new core routers for production work. This is a detailed process and one that we will take our time with and make sure we get it right. Our core routers are all Cisco branded and the new routers are also from Cisco. So the move over to the new routers will not be a complete changeover for us. Once the new routers are up and running with our required setup, we will run a burn in period of a 336 hours (two weeks). After this is concluded we plan on sending a network upgrade notice for the weekend of September 1st, 2013. This will include the network being down for a short period while our current routers are replaced with much more robust and capable systems. I will keep everyone informed via the blog and forums about the upgrade as this is a very large infrastructure upgrade. It is a great day here at TCH! View the full article
  23. Yesterday, Samsung announced a new line of SSD’s called The Samsung 840 EVO series; The Samsung 840 EVO is a consumer high performance SSD which for the first time comes in a 1000GB option along with four other options (120GB, 250 GB, 500GB, and 750GB). Pricing and Specifications: The pricing seems to be middle of the road until you get to the 1000GB model which seems to be quite the cost saving bargain when looking at Price Per GB at just $0.65 which is considerably low when compared to other premium SSD brands. When compared to Samsung’s other consumer lines it seems to be the middle child so to speak with the 250GB Samsung 840 being priced at $175, The Samsung 840 EVO 250GB at $189.99, and the Samsung 840 Pro 256GB at about $229.99. This new range of Samsung SSD’s seem to be in the high end of performance once you get into the 500GB and above range, however, before that you do see lower performance. Whereas many technology reviewers will focus on the read and write performance it is also very important to consider the Random Read and Random Write performance because those numbers will more accurately represent the performance of everyday things such as opening large applications. Even though most will never use an SSD to its full potential it is still important to consider these facts. However, once you get to the 500GB level you do see a noticeable increase in random write speeds. Essentially, what Samsung is pushing this new EVO model because of their newer controller the Samsung MEX which has a new capability for their smaller capacity models called TurboWrite. This is great to see because in the past the write speeds on smaller capacity SSD’s has been much lower than their older brothers. For comparison, the Samsung 840 120GB is rated at 120 MB/s and the New Samsung 840 EVO 120GB is rated at 410 MB/s. SIZE PRICE PRICE PER/GB READ WRITE RANDOM READ RANDOM WRITE CACHE 120GB $109.99 $0.92 540 MB/s 410 MB/s 94K IOPS 35K IOPS 256MB 250GB $189.99 $0.76 540 MB/s 520 MB/s 97K IOPS 66K IOPS 512MB 500GB $369.99 $0.74 540 MB/s 520 MB/s 98K IOPS 90K IOPS 512MB 750GB $529.99 $0.71 540 MB/s 520 MB/s 98K IOPS 90K IOPS 512MB 1000GB $649.99 $0.65 540 MB/s 520 MB/s 98K IOPS 90K IOPS 1GB The bottom line is that this new Samsung SSD looks to be a promising middle priced high performance SSD for the consumer. However, because Samsung is using a new controller with this device we do recommend that you should wait to buy until there have been some solid reviews! Sidenote: At their SSD Summit event Samsung also announced the XS1715, an super-fast NVMe (Non-Volitile Memory Express) SSD with storage options of all the way up to 1.6 TB! The XS1715 is the first and only 2.5” sized SFF-8639 SSD using PCIe 3.0 to encourage a max sequential speed of 3 GB/s, as well as 740k IOPS. View the full article
  24. We hope everyone is staying cool during this heat wave in the US! Here’s a few tips to help keep your computer healthy during the heat. Hard drives usually operate up to 140 degrees Fahrenheit (60 Celsius) and spin between 7,000-10,000 RPM (Revolutions Per Minute). The average car engine operates around 175 degrees Fahrenheit and spins around 2,500 RPM’s. Pretty wild, huh? - Cooling – make sure you blow out the dust and animal hair from your case and fans! This will help the fan circulate air and will keep it spinning freely. - Room to breath – Make sure your computer has room to breath! Keep it as low as possible as heat rises. Also leave space between any walls and obstructions for maximum circulation. - Ventilation in the computer room – It’s always a good idea to have ventilation in the room which your computer is in. Opening windows (as long as water won’t come in) and fans help to keep it cool. - Air Conditioning – If you have access to an air conditioner and can use it, we recommend it highly. It will help cool down your computer just like it cools you down - Turn it off when not in use! If you’re not using your computer then turn it off. Not only will it keep it cool, it will also save you money. Our servers are on all the time, just use them - Set your power settings properly – Adjust your power settings for optimum conditions. After X amount of time your screen and hard disks should be turned off if not in use. That’s all for now! Feel free to comment with more tips and suggestions! View the full article
