mtrolley Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 I'm curious as to how I could use shared SSL to secure my email setup. When I enter server102.tchmachines.com into Thunderbird as my IMAP server I get the following warning: "ls1208" is a site that uses a security certificate to encrypt data during transmission, but its certificate expired on 3/27/2006 5:23 PM. ...If I click Continue I get another warning: You have attempted to establish a connection with "server102.tchmachines.com". However, the certificate presented belongs to "ls1208". ... My goal is to be able to check my email securely, but without having to deal with these annoying dialogs every time I log in. Is this possible with the shared SSL setup? Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 It appears as though the certificate has expired. Please open a ticket with the help desk and report it and they will get it updated. As for the warnings. I just click past the warnings and go on. Quote
mtrolley Posted June 22, 2006 Author Posted June 22, 2006 I have opened a ticket. There's no way to avoid the warnings though? Why do they occur? is there a different SSL cert used for the imapd than for the web server? Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 The only way to get around the warning is to get your own SSL. Quote
TCH-Tim Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 Shared SSL certs have the server name (or similar) on them, they do not have your domain name. Your browser sees the mismatch and throws the warning. As long as you know that the cert is really coming from your server you should be okay. Your browser and/or email client should remember that you accepted the cert so you don't get the warning every time you connect. The only way not to get the warning is to purchase your own certificate as Bruce suggested. Quote
