queenpictoria Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 Good Morning, I need to know the procedure to change my password to my domain. My email account has been breeched via an eBay vandal. My account was taken over, and they have used my account to send fake emails to previous bidders promising them Second Chance offers. When the person unwittingly responds, one man was fleeced for nearly $1000.00 dollars. The crooks are very convincing. I have changed my password for eBay, and they suggest I change my password for my domain. I know how to change the passwords for my email boxes, but I think they're suggesting more stringent measures. Can anybody point the way??? My sincere appreciation! queenpictoria Quote

TCH-Tim Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 I'm sorry, I gave you instructions for resetting a lost password. If you know your password, you can just log into cPanel at your-domain.com/cpanel and click "Change Password." It should be the third item in the top row. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 To change your email account passwords, log into cPanel and select Email. Select Manage Accounts. You will see Change Pass links to the right of each email address you have set up. To change your domain password you need to select Change Password under Site Management. Quote

If I change the domain password, do I need to change the passwords for the email boxes? In other words, is the domain password enough to protect the email boxes? Thanks again, queenpictoria Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 Was your site hacked or was you email account compromised? They are both separate. To be safe I would change them all. Quote
queenpictoria Posted May 3, 2006 Author Posted May 3, 2006 Was your site hacked or was you email account compromised? They are both separate. To be safe I would change them all. The site was not hacked to my knowledge. There is some association with eBay since they use an email I have on TCH as part of my ID and communication with them. I didn't know someone could get into the email by subverting the domain security. I assumed that if they couldn't get into the domain, they'd be locked out of the emails as well. Thanks. I'll change them as well. Regards, queenpictoria Quote
TCH-Tim Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 Do you know if your account was actually hijacked or if they just spoofed your email address? Meaning, did they actually log in to your accout and send emails from your domain, or did they just have your email address in the "From" or "Reply To" fields? Quote
queenpictoria Posted May 3, 2006 Author Posted May 3, 2006 Do you know if your account was actually hijacked or if they just spoofed your email address? Meaning, did they actually log in to your accout and send emails from your domain, or did they just have your email address in the "From" or "Reply To" fields? Hi Tim, Thank you for your continued interest. Our eBay account was "hijacked" to the extent that the culprit got in and sent fake emails to a bidder. It was a fake "second chance" opportunity that is sometimes offered when the winning bidder fails to pay. The bidder thought it was me and made a purchase. The bidder was new and had not learned to not answer emails regarding eBay that were not also in the box provided on eBay itself. Needless to say, the bidder was ripped off. To the extent that the culprit got into the account, they might have also got into other private information, including private email. Of course, I don't log the passwords for TCH anywhere on eBay, but there was some concern there could be some other breech. That is why I am just changing passwords. I figured it best to check before I changed everything. I don't really know how anybody could get the keys to the domain unless I was on an insecure WiFi service, in which case I don't log onto secure sights. Anyway, thanks for all your support. You guys are so great! queenpictoria Quote
stevevan Posted May 4, 2006 Posted May 4, 2006 As an added security measure, you should make sure to use a combination of at least 8 or more letters, numbers, and other characters. I know it can be a pain, but it will make things harder for hackers. Remember though...nothing is foolproof. If a hacker really wants in, they will eventually find a way. Wish they'd put their talents to better use! Quote
TCH-Tim Posted May 4, 2006 Posted May 4, 2006 First, I put on my tinfoil hat. Then I use a Random Password Generator to create a long and complicated password which I store in KeePass on an encrypted USB drive that is either attached to my computer or in my pocket. A backup copy of my KeePass database is on an encrypted DVD in the house safe. Quote
