I have spent today trying to download a 429 mb rar file. After lots of waiting the file is downloaded, but not being placed in the specific folder I have told Firefox to place all downloaded files in. :D

Instead it with the help from Winrar starts to open the file, which I at the moment did not want it to do. :whip:

I have checked Firefox > Tools > Options > Downloads > File types, if there is something there that will make rar files to unpack automatically, but there isn´t. Also checked Winrars settings which seems to be ok. :D

Does anyone know what I need to do to have a rar file downloaded but not unpacked until I tell it to be? :P

The quick answer would be to right-click on the link and select "Save link as...".

Longer answer: You might check how Windows itself is set up to handle .rar files:

- Open a Windows Explorer window.

- On the menu, click 'Tools', 'Folder Options...'.

- Click the 'File Types' tab, wait for list of file extensions to fill window.

- Scroll down to 'RAR', click once on it to select it, then click 'Advanced' button.

- See if 'Confirm open after download' box is checked. I suspect it is not, and you'll probably want it check that box to change the behavior you're seeing.

- Click 'OK', then click 'OK' again.

Hope this helps...

I´ll check if the long answer works.

The "Save link as" option was not available in this case for some reason (not sure what you call it, but I´ve run in to it before, so it´s not a site-specific thing).

Thanks David. :potofgold:

Ok, I have checked this now and the 'Confirm open after download' box was already checked.

Welcome to the forums AwwYouDead

You don't say what OS you are running so I am assuming Windows. What's happening is .rar files have been associated with Firefox for some reason on your machine (or so it sounds).

Open Windows Explorer, Select Tools, then Folder Options and then File Types. Scroll until you find rar highlight it and select change. Now select the program you wish to associate with .rar files.
