Rather than having things be a mess while my DNS transfers, I decided to get the most-used portions of my site up here on TCH before switching my DNS from my old host (so my old stuff would at least still be available until I was finished). Everything's going great so far, except I'm having some problems with losing FTP connection fairly easily -- ie when I'm uploading more than maybe 10 files, I'll get timeout errors that look like this: *** CuteFTP 6.0 - build Dec 23 2004 *** STATUS:> Transferring file "/public_html/test/P5211410.jpg"... Link to file server lost. ERROR:> File error. for some of my files, which then will not transfer. Other files continue to transfer just fine. After all the other files transfer successfully, my ftp program appears to try to resume transfer (I assume, may be wrong...), at which point I get this: COMMAND:>APPE P5211500.jpgSTATUS:> Connecting FTP data socket 69.50.215.224:41997... 451 P5211500.jpg: Append/Restart not permitted, try again ERROR:> Temporary completion problem reply. ERROR:> The connection failed due to an error or timeout. 1) Verify that the destination IP address is correct. 2) Increase the connection timeout threshold under Global Settings | Connection. 3) Switch to the opposite data connection type (PASV or PORT) under Site Settings | Type tab. 4) Verify that the problem is not local by trying to connect to an alternate server. 5) If a server name was used, verify it resolves to the correct address. 6) If using a local server table for server name resolution, check to see that it doesn't resolve to an obsolete address. 7) Try pinging the address. 8) If you are using a router, verify the router is up and running (check by pinging it and then ping an address outside of the router). 9) Do a traceroute to the destination to verify all routers along the connection path are operational. 10) Verify that your subnet mask is setup properly. 11) Verify that your local software or hardware firewall is not blocking outbound connections originating from CuteFTP. 12) Verify that your anti-virus software is not at fault (try disabling it). STATUS:> Waiting 60 seconds... 451 P5211500.jpg: Append/Restart not permitted, try again ERROR:> Trashed response received. I've done 1-4. The rest either I cannot do, or don't apply to me. It's sort of annoying to have to go back and pick out the files that got an error and re-upload those, since they're interspersed throughout the queue. I had a lot of photos to upload, so it took more time than I planned on. I'm not sure if this is just because I'm using the temporary FTP connection (by IP address of the server I'm on rather than by my domain) or if it's a regular issue? Is it on my end? I didn't have this problem at all while uploading/downloading a large amount of files to/from my old server (even today). I'm using CuteFTP 6.0, if that's at all relevant, I don't have any sort of firewall running, I don't go through a proxy. Or is it user error? Thanks. Quote
ria Posted October 9, 2005 Author Posted October 9, 2005 I also notice that when I attempt to access my site by the http://**IP**/~**USERNAME** format, sometimes it gives me a "not found" error and the address bar shows the wrong server (108). Perhaps it's that the IP address rotates between the two or something? Seven years of managing websites and I'm still so clueless. I'm sorry Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted October 9, 2005 Posted October 9, 2005 Hi Amanda, I had a look at other cute ftp posts with similar problems and it looks like most of them have had routing problems. If you want, please open a ticket to the helpdesk and ask them if they can connect to your account with ftp to eliminate any problems on the TCH end. Another option would be to try another ftp program to rule out any program problems. Theone I use is Core FTP. Quote

I had really liked having a reliable FTP prog after so many years of experimenting with buggy ones, I guess that's out. Trying FileZilla for now, seems to be working. Thanks to everyone anyway.
