OldTimer Posted August 13, 2005 Posted August 13, 2005 (edited) I just noticed that TCH Steve is into Ham Radio. My dad was into it for almost 40 years. So I got to thinking and went to qrz.org and looked up his call sign and sure enough it expired 2 days ago. Kind of a sad thing to see (he passed away last year) What were the chances that I would look that up so close to the expiration date? Anyhow I just see such a strong comparison between the 2 (ham radio and Internet) My dad would set for hours on end in front of his radio and now I'm doing the same thing here in front of my PC. Communicating with people from all around the world. I tried to get him involved with the internet but he said he was too old. In memory of dad and WB6WDO Or as he would say- whiskey baker six whiskey dog ocean /or/ whiskey baker six will drink often If I had a nickle for every time I heard that. Thanks for listening, just brings back a lot of good memories. Greg Edited August 13, 2005 by OldTimer Quote
stevevan Posted August 13, 2005 Posted August 13, 2005 Greg: My condolences on your father. Funny...I mainly got into ham radio because of my dad also (N9SLC) and my younger sister (KB8VEJ). Early in my Air Force career, I was big into HF with the military. Now, since I'm a self-proclaimed techno-geek, ham radio and computers are hand-in-hand for me. It's almost like a whole new world is opening up and it's exciting to see what all can be done with the two communications mediums! And as the FCC starts to relax the code requirement, I think (hopefully) Ham Radio will take off even more! Quote
Deverill Posted August 13, 2005 Posted August 13, 2005 Relax the code requirement? What!!! It'll be just like those darn CB-ers. I have met many wonderful friends because of being a ham. I just wish things were different so I could be involved again. Down in Key West the 2m/440 conversations are almost non-existant and my HF Rig blew up (transmits when the key is up - kinda hard to communicate when the radio's backwards). Anyway, you are right that they are related. There's a little kid in most of us that are ham/computer geeks that wants to take the toaster apart to see how it works. I also believe there is an inherent need to communicate with others built in to us. Put that together along with the cool technology of the day and you get us. Condolences about your father... TCH-Don Posted August 13, 2005 Posted August 13, 2005 Greg, sorry about your Dad. I got into ham radio in high school. We converted old tank transmitters to two meters. Built our receivers from kits and had a great time. Yes now that you mention it, its was a lot like the internet and a forum like this. K8UOB retired. Quote
stevevan Posted August 13, 2005 Posted August 13, 2005 Relax the code requirement? What!!! It'll be just like those darn CB-ers. Not quite...you'll still have to take a test. And surprisingly, in a poll done by the ARRL of responses to the FCC's proposal, an overwhelming majority are in favor of this. According to what I've been reading, there are many countries who don't have a code requirement now. But the debate goes on! I would think we'll hear something official by year's end. (Then I know what my wife can get me for Christmas...a nice HF rig! ) Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted August 13, 2005 Posted August 13, 2005 Greg, sorry about your Dad's passing. I've never gotten into ham radio but the Hamvention is held here in Dayton, Ohio. People from all over the world turn out for that. Quote
