Hello.

I want to Password Protect some of the files in my public_html file.

I set a password according to the CPanel->Password Protect Directories path.

So, now, how do I check to tell the file is protected.

I was told this is one way to protect private material from being indexed by webcrawlers.

Any tutorials? I've just become some kind of tutorial junky lately! :) :(

Thanks,

Close your browser, restart the browser, then try browsing to a page in the protected directory. If you're prompted to enter a username and password, it's protected. If you're not prompted, it's not.

I have a question about this same topic of password protecting web directories. I think I inadvertantly protected (restricted access) to my main website!

When I go to www.sophiasystems.com a pop up comes up asking for a password. In Cpanel I explored the area called Site Management-Web Protect and then looked at both my public_html folder and my index page to check if I had restricted access to it for some crazy reason but cannot see anything odd. Please advise.....

Thanks, Cheryl

There may be something in your .htaccess file causing the box to appear.

If you did password protect the folder and then removed it it may not have removed it properly. If you can't edit the .htaccess file yourself you can open a help desk ticket and they will help you. Link at top of page.

thanks I will try that. Also, is there any tutorial that explains the permissions box, specifically the permission numbers? I want to learn and feel confident that I am giving the appropriate permissions to any directory. thanks. cheryl
