I needed to convert one of my PC's back to Win XP Pro from Ubuntu Linux. Under Linux the drives were C:system, D:swap, and E:which remained NTFS and not accessed by Linux.

After reloading Win my drives are: E:(NTFS) is now C:, CD-ROM 0 is now D:, CD-ROM 1 is E: and my system - boot volume is F:. The Linux swap partition has not been formatted so it was not assigned a leter.

Under Computer Management/Disk Management I am able to relable all of the drives, except F:\ system volume. Everythings works, but that's not the point, so how do I change the drive letter F to C?

Right Click on My Computer, Click on Manage, find Disk Management, then right click on the drives you want to change and choose the change drive letter and paths, and click Change, and click on the letter drop down menu to pick new letter, click OK. Do that for each drive you want to change.

See if this does what you want. You may have to shuffle drive letters to make the drive letter C available before reassigning it.

You took a different route to get to the same place.

If I try to change the drive letter of the system volume on my computer, the following message pops up in a message box:

Windows cannot modify the drive letter of your system volume or boot volume.

I found this article at the MS Knowledge Base:

How to restore the system/boot drive letter in Windows

The article contains a number of warnings - read the article thoroughly and use extreme caution if you decide you want to try the steps described in the article.

Thats the same warning I get. Since nothing has been installed yet I'm going to try that MS Knowledge Base article. I'll let you know what happens.

Yes I realize yours and my way were basically the same...my point was you need to free up the C: drive before you reassign it. The MS article David found is probably what you need. Good luck.

Madmanmcp,

My apologies if you thought I was shooting you down. I wasn't. I was just saying that I had already done that. As for the article David found - if you have nothing else better to do someday and the day is pretty much free then go for it. DO NOT TRY IT ON YOUR PRIMARY PC. I'v been looking at the Windows boot screen for about 30 min.

I think I will reinstall again. I wish I had noticed this before all of the updates were applied. Hopefully now that everything is NTFS and not Linux the lettering will be correct.
