Hey guys,

I need some help with setting up a subdomain. I currently have a subdomain that I created. http://wowui.beyondeight.com and it works great in gettting people to the correct page. The problem I have is that when they get to my page, instead of seeing the subdomains address, they see the actual address where I kept the page (ie. http://www.beyondeight.com/WoWUI/).

Is there a way that I overlooked that will allow me to show subdomain address in the address bar instead?

First, when looking at your profile, it seems you have never been properly welcomed to the forums (even though your first post was a year ago). So without further ado,

Welcome to the forums!!

Ok. Back to business. I've never encountered the problem that you are describing. Usually when I create a subdomain, users only see the subdomain in the URL unless I have added a redirect for that subdomain.

So If I create a subdomain whatever.mydomain.tld then the users see whatever.mydomain.tld, even though the file they are viewing is actually located at www.mydomain.tld/whatever. That is the behaviour you want. You don't need to set up redirection for this to occur.

However, If I create a subdomain whatever2.mydomain.tld and then I create a redirection for that subdomain to www.mydomain.tld/whatever2, the users will not see the subdomain URL in the address bar.

So maybe you should check to make sure you haven't added redirection to your subdomain. If you have, it is easy to remove, and then the URL will show like you want it to. I just verified this with my site, and it works like I've described.

If you haven't set up redirection, post back, and maybe somebody else has an idea that will help.

Haha, thank you very much for the welcome... Ever since I used this hosting I have been really happy and never had to ask any questions, thats why I haven't been around.

I will try your advise about not using a redirect, I think I did redirect my subdomain and therefore my problem.

No worries about puctuation, I don't puctuate properly and I'm to use to reading posts that are terrible

P.S Sorry for the double post, I didn't get redirected to the forums so I refreshed and therefore the double post.

I did the same thing yesterday. Darn browser hangs! (Because in my case yesterday, it was obviously not a user-induced error! )

Maybe im not thinking straight, but I am unsure how I am supposed to set it up.

So right now I am in my CPanel page,

I click on the Subdomains Icon and it gives me a few options, create a new Subdomain, Setup Redirections, Remove Redirection and Delete subdomain.

Am I in the wrong spot? If I do not setup a redirect then how does the http://wowui.beyondeight.com Subdomain know to go to http://www.beyondeight.com/WoWUI ?

Thanks for your help.

Ah so thats where I probably went wrong. I created the folder first.

So right now would my only option would be to move all my files to the other folder, reset my DB or start all over again, right? Is there a way I can refer my subdomain to the folder I already created without using a redirect?

I currently use wordpress and Im not to clear about moving the files around. Im afriad it might mess with my settings and previous posts.

EDIT: added more details and made sure everything was in English, not gibberish

Only with a redirect which will do exactly what it's currently doing.

Copy the contents of that folder to a new folder. Delete the subdomain and recreate it and you'll have what you want.

Yes, you are in the right spot.

When you create a subdomain, Cpanel automatically creates the target folder for you. That is why Bruce said that you shouldn't add a subdomain for a folder that already exists.

If you want to work around this (because you already have content in the destination folder), you could do the following:

1. Rename the folder that currently contains your content (that will save your content, and you can copy it into the correct folder later)

2. Delete the redirection using the page you described in the above post.

3. Delete the subdomain.

4. Recreate the subdomain. This will create a folder with the same name.

5. Copy the content back into the correct folder.

This will maintain your content, and it will allow cPanel to properly set up your subdomain.

There might be an easier way to do this, but I'm sure this one will work. If somebody else has an easier way, I'm sure they will share as well.

First of all, I must say that I am impressed at the responce rate on these forums. You guys are awsome

Secondly, sorry for delayed post. You guys are just to fast at replying =D

Ok, I understand the whole concept now. Hopefully this will be my last question.

Since I am using Wordpress. By moving my contents from one folder into another, will this mean that I have to resetup the database in anyway? or will everything transfer properly by me moving all its contents?

Well I appreciate all the help you guys have given me, ill try asking on the wordpress support forums. Thanks for hte great forums and webhost. Keep it up.

I don't use wordpress, so I don't know. But from the limited working I've done with mySQL databases, I've never had to tie them to a specific folder. The database works independently from the folder that the webapp is in.

I think it will especially be fine, because you don't intend to use wordpress while it is in its temporary location. By the time you use it again, everything will be back to the way it was last time it was working properly.

I don't think you will have a problem if you do as Paul suggests. Nobody will be able to access your blog until you get it moved back into the subdomain folder is all.

And thanks Paul for offering the suggestion of renaming the current folder, removing the redirect and recreating a new subdomain with the same name. I was rushed for time when I responded and was going to suggest that.

Another thing that may be possible is open a help desk ticket and explain what you want and they may be able to make it right without all these steps.

Yay! You made my day. Glad I can help.

I think if you replace step 5 with the next two steps it will also work.

5. Delete the folder created when you create the subdomain.

6. Rename the backup folder your subdomain folder name.

This way you don't have to copy anything.

Slick. I bet that will work too. And it would be a lot easier (and faster). Good call Bruce!
