Foxyheart Posted March 20, 2005 Posted March 20, 2005 I have no idea what to call this so I don't know where to look. I have many sites on a 'free' hosting site and because of the excess ads on there I would like to get a domain name and combine many of those that are related. I have seen a way that some sites do it, but don't know how they do (am I making sense?) The regular site name would be http://www.blah-blah-blah.com. However instead of adding /megacolon.html at the end for related information (mainly because there are 7 pages to that megacolon site) how do I do the http://megacolon.blah-blah-blah.com? Is each name before the blah-blah-blah considered a different domain? Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted March 20, 2005 Posted March 20, 2005 Welcome to the forums Foxyheart. Those are considered subdomains and are acceptable on all shared hosting plans offered at TotalChoice. If you wanted separate domains pointing to those subdomains that is not permitted. You would require separate hosting plans for each or a reseller account. Quote
TCH-Tim Posted March 20, 2005 Posted March 20, 2005 (edited) It's called a subdomain and it would all fall under the blah-blah umbrella. And it's very easy to do in cpanel. When you set up a subdomain a folder with that name is created under your main public_html directory. So megacolon.blah.com is the same as blah.com/megacolon/. If you have trouble setting it up, let us know. edit: bruce is too fast Edited March 20, 2005 by timhodge Quote
Foxyheart Posted March 20, 2005 Author Posted March 20, 2005 Thanks, guys, you are great! (I would say awesome, but I don't know you well enough yet, lol) Definitely looking towards TCH for my domain(s). One more ?..... I have a barely-there-working windows 98 (computer is over 7 years old), when I do FTP (which I still have to learn), I have to keep everything on this computer, right? Can it all be on a cd? or does it have to be on my harddrive? Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted March 20, 2005 Posted March 20, 2005 You can keep a copy where ever you like. One thing to point out, you are responsible for your data. So backups are your responsibility. Quote
Foxyheart Posted March 20, 2005 Author Posted March 20, 2005 Gotcha, thanks. OK, now you guys are awesome Quote
Foxyheart Posted March 20, 2005 Author Posted March 20, 2005 One more thing. If I do the sub-domain thing, do I have to be sure there are no other names like that? Or will it be forever tied to the domain name so I can name it anything? Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted March 20, 2005 Posted March 20, 2005 As long you have a registered domain name (******) you can create as many subdomains you want (a.******, b.******...) as long its done under ****** And welcome to the forums Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted March 20, 2005 Posted March 20, 2005 It is tied to your domain name so anyhting would work as long as you didn't try to use the same subdomain again. Quote
Foxyheart Posted March 20, 2005 Author Posted March 20, 2005 Y E S ! ! ! This beginning to sound better and better and most of all, do-able. Thank you so very much. Quote

Pendragon Posted March 21, 2005 Posted March 21, 2005 Welcome to the forum Foxyheart!please let us know if you need anything <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Here's a somewhat related question.. I have several domain names, I'm not currently using them for anything, but I don't want them to stay 'dead' either. Is there a way I can put a page up for these domain, without having a hosting plan for each? Maybe just a page that says 'go here instead' ? Quote

You then point the domains to the dns in your welcome e-mail. you may not point them to a page, folder or subdomain unless you have a reseller account. Then when someone goes to one of the domains they will be taken to your current account domain. Quote
