dhester Posted November 16, 2004 Posted November 16, 2004 Although not new the writing web pages, I am new to purchasing and accessing a host service. All my other work is done through my university and they have their own servers. When I logged into my ftp client the first thing I saw was a lot of unfamiliar folders, ie., email, www, private, public, etc. and a few files. My goal was to go in and begin setting up my folders that will house the web page I am developing. What I uploaded were 3 folders, one an image folder with only 4 or 5 small images, and inc folder with a one or two docs, an index.php, header.inc and one other. It seemed to take a longer time than I would have expected to get them copied over, but then I decided to delete them and that seemed to taken even longer until finally I received an error telling me "blocking call cancelled" and "retrieve of folder listing failed." What happened? What did I do? When I call up the domain in my browser I still get the parent directory/folder listing, so I'm not sure what has/is taking place up there. I deleted what I uploaded because I wasn't sure which folder, if any I was suppose to put everything in. Can someone please give me some direction and thought on what's going on? This should have been, I'm sure, a very SIMPLE task, yet on my first attempt, I've failed miserably Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted November 16, 2004 Posted November 16, 2004 (edited) First of all, welcome to your extended family What you need to do is to place all files and folders inside the public_html and (I think) replace the current index.html with index.php. Then you should be able to see your site through ****** if nothing else needs to be done since you use php. NOTE: Im not sure about the php question since I dont use php myself. As for the speed problem, it can be that lots of people that share same server with you are ftp´ing at the same time or problems with your isp etc. If it continues, please make a traceroute and tell us the result or submit a ticket to the techs and the can make sure there is no problems on the TCH end. dhester Posted November 16, 2004 Author Posted November 16, 2004 Okay...so my site then goes into the public folder and that will enable everyone to see my web pages when they go to my site? right? I did manage to finish deleting the pages I had previously put up there, so that's good.... what is the purpose of the www folder if I am to locate my web pages in the public folder? Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted November 16, 2004 Posted November 16, 2004 The "www" folder is a symbolic link to the "public_html" folder. Just load all your content to the "public_html" folder and you will be fine. Moving for organization. Quote
TCH-Don Posted November 16, 2004 Posted November 16, 2004 Welcome to the Family and your new home! You may already know this, but you can configure your ftp prpgram to automatically go into your public_html folder by seting the ftp program remote directory to public_html. We really are like family here. So if you need anything, just ask your new family! We love to help Quote
