Program to fax from my computer

Anyone know a program I can use to send a fax through my computer?

I know a lot of Windows users that use Winfax.

Bruce, is that Norton Winfax? I also like that one (for Windows). I think it's the only Symantec program that I allow to run on the computers I'm responsible for

I've never heard it called Norton Winfax but yes, Symantec is who makes it.

I asked because I think I remember another program called Winfax... but maybe it's the same thing

If I remember correctly, Symantec bought WinFax from someone else in the mid to late 90's.

WinFax used to be a company on its own until Symantec gobbled them up. They had a Lite Version which was free and it came packaged with most modems on a 3 1/2" floppy (still has a few stashed away).

 

This version was limited of course but was perfect for faxing a simple document to a single number. If you wanted the bells and whistles you needed to purchase the profesional version. This was best in its class.

 

Now I believe Windows XP and ME comes with built in fax support and a stand alone program is not needed. But I have a combo scan/print/fax printer and have not tried them.

Ok, to use the Fax in XP you need a modem connected to a phone line, a document to fax and a fax number to receive it

 

I'll use MS Word as an example. Open the document in word and click on File and Print. Now in the Printer name box click the down arrow for the list of available printers and select FAX and click OK.

 

The Send Fax wizard starts and you are on your way. Fill in the information requested, I don't think its manditory but its informative for the folks receiving the fax. Once the wizard is completed the phone should dial and send your fax.

Heee heee Bob, I think if I looked through some old boxes I might find a copy of WinFax on disk too.

 

Boy this thread is bringing up old memories of WinFax Pro. Quite a few years ago one of my job tasks was to do "fax-blasting" to our clients. Que up 15,000+ fax numbers to 3 8-line fax servers... what a PITA! It would run over several days and if any of the servers stalled it was HECK trying to pick up where it left off... If any of the data entry people mis-typed a number into the database (like typing in 911 instead of 919 for the area code) the police would come calling because the server would try the number 6 times before marking it failed.
