I'm new to working with .htaccess and I was wondering if anyone knows how many usernames and passwords can be stored in a .htpasswd file before perfomance is affected (if at all). Would 1000 username/passwords be too many, for instance?

I wouldn't think 1000 users would effect the perfmance considerably, but using .htaccess for the 1000 users would make things rather difficult for you to manage. I'd reccomend finding a PHP script from hotscripts.com.
