techy Posted August 8, 2004 Posted August 8, 2004 Okay this may sound like a lot of stupid questions but here goes: I installed movable type in scgi-bin and now what ip address do I tell other people to go to view my blog? or can they? I put it in the scgi-bin for more security but if other people can't view it maybe I shouldn't have put it there. Also my movable type publishing platform basically where you log in as melody nelson doesn't look like the screen shots I've seen. It looks like it's missing the graphics like the graphics aren't there like when you load your webpage and forgot to load the graphics with it or have them named wrong in the html. Any ideas why this is happening? Last but not least. if other people can view my blog in the scgi-bin how do I password protect it? I just want close friends and family to view. Like have an index page and a click to enter and then prompted for a password. that's why I asked my first question not sure how to link to my blog from the index page so others can view. So can I just put a password on the scgi-bin folder under password protect directories? okay sorry one more question do I have to create an archives folder? When I log into my movable type publishing platform and click on weblog config the bottom url mentions an archive folder but will this be created automatically? or do I need to create it and then point it in the right direction? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Quote
techy Posted August 8, 2004 Author Posted August 8, 2004 Okay I think I fixed my problem with the images, styles and documents not loading by moving them and putting them inside the static folder then I logged back in and waaalaah I could see the images etc. I created an archives folder under public_html so basically it's under www.mysite.com/public_html/archives but I'm still confused about how to direct people and movable type itself to the proper places. What url do I give people to get to my weblog? I have it under www.mysite.com/public_html/scgi-bin/blog but how to get to it? Also under the weblog config of movable type I have the following items please let me know if these are correct: Local Site Path: /home/username/public_html/scgi-bin/blog Site URL: http://mysite.com/ Local archive path: /home/username/public_html/scgi-bin/blog/archives Archive URL: http://mysite.com/archives/ But also as I stated in my last post I want to have an index page of HTML with a click to enter link and then guests get prompted with a user name and password dialog box. Please help. Quote
LisaJill Posted August 8, 2004 Posted August 8, 2004 Ok, you generally don't want people (normal visitos) to go through the scgi-bin. Only people utilizing the admin interface go there (to login and post, or whatever). Iin weblog config, core setup, you should change the output of the files - you do NOT want html files written to a cgi-bin ever as they will not be readable. You should decide where you want your archives stores (in root? in a subfolder?) and change it there. When i ran MT this is what I had: local site path: /home/username/public_html/ local site url: http://www.domain.com/ local archive path: /home/username/archives/ locatel archive url: http://www.domain.com/archives/ I forget if that trailing slash should be there or not, is the only thing - it should say on that screen. Then, to see your site, you'd send users to the local site url (in this case: www.domain.com) that you set up. Hope that helps! Quote
LisaJill Posted August 8, 2004 Posted August 8, 2004 As a note, if you don't want the blog publically viewable (you want to password protect it) I'd output the files to a subdomain and use "Web Protect" from cpanel to protect it. Then, for weblog config, you'd put this: ocal site path: /home/username/public_html/private/ local site url: http://www.domain.com/private/ local archive path: /home/username/private/archives/ locatel archive url: http://www.domain.com/private/archives/ you woudl then make your own, static html page with whatever you want a link for "enter" that points to www.domain.com/private - and set up a username and password for it. Hope that helps! Quote
techy Posted August 8, 2004 Author Posted August 8, 2004 Thanks so much Lisa for your post However I'm still not sure I have everything configured correctly. Here is a list of Folders I have under public_html. _private _vti_bin _vti_cnf _vti_log _vti_pvt _vti_txt archives cgi-bin images mt-static scgi-bin Do I need to have one with my blog name under public_html? Remember I installed all to scgi-bin. except I moved images, docs and styles ccs to the mt-static folder I want people to see a index page and then have to go to www.mysite.com/blog to get to my blog. LisaJill Posted August 8, 2004 Posted August 8, 2004 You will need to create the "blog" directory, then in my previous example (the one with "private") replace the word private with blog. Where you installed the program files does not matter as MT will putput the static, viewable files wherever you tell it to in weblog config. Does that help? Quote
techy Posted August 8, 2004 Author Posted August 8, 2004 Yes, Lisa that helps! However I'm still not sure when I go to www.mysite.com/blog all I see is the Index of /blog and parent directory and archives folders. Do I need to make a post first for something to show up? Quote
LisaJill Posted August 8, 2004 Posted August 8, 2004 You either need to make a post or hit the "rebuild all" button. =) MT is not a dynamic system (apparentoy 3.1 will have some dynamic stuff but for now it's not) it is static, therefore you need to tell it to write to those static files anytime you make any changes. techy Posted August 8, 2004 Author Posted August 8, 2004 I tried rebuilding but over in the left bottom of the screen internet explorer says error on page. Quote
LisaJill Posted August 8, 2004 Posted August 8, 2004 Are you running any popup blockers or firewalls? Things like ZoneAlarm, etc? Those will stop it from working. =/ Quote
LisaJill Posted August 8, 2004 Posted August 8, 2004 Oh! You also need to make sure that you upload mt.js to your static files directory - or you'll have a multitude of problems =) Quote
techy Posted August 8, 2004 Author Posted August 8, 2004 I have google toolbar so I enabled popups on my website and I shut down my zone alarm and moved the mt.js to my static folder and oh my gosh, oh my gosh oh my GOSH IT WORKED!!!! I am now doing a happy dance just like these guys at my computer Lisa I give you a big thanks/hug I've been trying to get this to work since 9 this morning  Also a big thanks/hug to Rick who helped me out with the first part yesterday  you guys are the greatest Thumbs Up TCH Rocks! Quote
LisaJill Posted August 8, 2004 Posted August 8, 2004 Happy you got it working. =) I believe you can probably modify google and zonealarm to be on while working with MT, just have to have an exception. But I can't help with either of those programs since I don't use 'em. =) Grats again, now you can start getting frustrated while customizing it.... *grins* Quote
