Desperate For Help!

For my boss, they want 4 mpg videos on the website (www.hytecmfg.com) and I cannot get the videos to download for anything. It says there is an error. But then it automatically closes the dialog box and stops publishing the site. I figured that I should try them one at a time since the files are so large, but it hasn't worked. My computer tech background has become useless for building this website. Even coding it in through HTML hasn't worked. Please help!

Are you saying you are having problems FTPing them up to the site or publishing with Cute Site Builder?

 

How large are the files? You should be able to FTP them to your web space and then create a link to them in your web page.

Yes, I am using Cute site builder. The videos are around 35-64 meg. Really rather large, but that is the smallest that I can make them. I tried FTPing them using the internet provider's uploading service, but the error popped up and then closed the program automatically.

Just a guess, but can it be that you are running out of space?

Nope, unlimited webspace -- according to the provider -- they just charge a bit more the larger this site grows

and explain your problem.

It also might be your ISP has an upload limit? or time out?

We have the FTP provided by Charter Digital Cable. I called there a few days ago and their techs have no idea what they are doing. I said 'FTP' and he talked to me like I was some nut-job. I don't know what to do--I seriously have tried everything I could imagine. Linking them through seperate pages. (One page per Video) Nothing seems to be working. I think that my employer's son sent me an odd file. It is only readable by windows media player and is not an average file it isn't a file I can find under video files on the computer. (Like AVI, MPEG, and such) But this says MPG, which I would assume that would be the same, but we didn't cover video files in PC Technician.

I strongly recommend you FTP directly to your website as others have suggested. You can then just insert a LINK TO URL to call up the videos. Here's a page that talks about CSB and FTP functions: http://www.samisite.com/publish/using_ftp.htm

 

There are links to some free and paid FTP programs on that page. Use one of them with the SAME SETTINGS as in CSB (samples shown in the screen prints on the pages). Sometimes that will give you a better error message than an ftp through file manager on the host. Try uploading a SMALL txt file to your site. Then manually type in the URL into your address bar to see if you can access it. Try a larger file... then if all those work, and one of the HUGE videos doesn't, you will know that the FTP is fine, but there are other limits in place.

 

CSB does have some FTP functions built-in. Ordinarily I would recommend you use an Insert > HTML (for video file) but the massive size of your file makes that impractical! That would make your CSB tlx file outrageously large.

 

If you want to check your FTP settings, here's the step by step that CSB techs recommended:

 

Try connecting to your host from the command line. If you are not familiar with how to do this then follow these steps:

 

1. Click on the Start button, and then choose Run…

In Windows NT, 2000 or XP, type in: cmd

In Windows 95, 98 or ME, type in: command

 

2. Click on OK. A command prompt will appear in a new window.

 

3. Type in the following command: ftp <insert host address here>

EXAMPLE: C:>ftp ftp.globalscape.com

 

4. Press Enter on your keyboard

 

5. You should now be prompted for a username. Type it in and press enter again.

 

6. You should now be prompted for a password. Type it in and press enter once more.

 

If all is well, then you should now be connected to the FTP site. Go ahead and type "quit" and hit Enter to exit the commandline FTP program.  Use these same settings in your CSB publishing host setup screen.

 

If you can not connect this way, one of the settings you are using is incorrect (address, username, password, etc).

Check with your web host immediately.
