SmashIN Posted March 20, 2003 Posted March 20, 2003 Hey say i want to open up an online store... which one would be better to choose a Dedicated Web Hosting PLan or just a Web Hosting Plan or does it really matter... And what is the difference between the 2 Thx! Quote
bethohio3 Posted March 20, 2003 Posted March 20, 2003 There are two common types of web hosting: dedicated and shared In a nutshell: Dedicated hosting means that the server (a specific computer system running software to server [deliver] web pages only hosts the pages for a single site. Shared hosting means that the server is hosting pages for multiple web sites. To explain those in more detail (if simply): Shared hosting is much more common. Assume you have an 80 GB hard drive that can hold web pages. If each website needs 8 GB, that server can host ten different websites. The machine (server) that has that 80 GB hard drive is shared. Not only is the hard drive shared, of course, but so is the CPU, RAM, bandwidth the machine can handle, etc. That's shared hosting. Dedicated hosting means that the entire system is dedicated to a single web site. The hard drive only has one web site on it. The CPU, RAM, and bandwidth are dedicated to supporting just that single web site. Semi-dedicated (as TCH does it) means that no more than 4 clients are on a single machine. Reasonably enough, dedicatd servers are much more expensive--the cost of the machine isn't spread out among as many clients. The question of "Which one do I need?" is answered "it depends". Most organizations starting out probably can do just fine with a shared hosting solution. When that stops being sufficient is when you move up to a semi-dedicated or a dedicated solution. Hope this helps. --Beth Quote
SmashIN Posted March 20, 2003 Author Posted March 20, 2003 lol yes beth does rock... thx for the info i think i know which one im going to choose cause its so damn cheap here with what i need Quote
Guest Guest Posted March 20, 2003 Posted March 20, 2003 So what's the max users per shared account? Quote
Lianna Posted March 20, 2003 Posted March 20, 2003 Multiple domain hosting on TCH is only available through the reseller, Dedicated and Semi-Dedicated plans. Is that what you mean by 'users'? That is completely dependent upon the packages (plans) that you create for your accounts. For example, say you buy the Simple Reseller plan. That gives you 550Mb space and 8Gb bandwidth. If you create only one plan to resell that comes with 68Mb space and 1Gb bandwidth, then you could effectively put 8 domains on your plan. (Don't forget that one of those is your own domain!) If you want to give your domains more room to grow then create a package with 135Mb space and 2Gb bandwidth = 4 domains total (including your own). You see how the math is working? So any combination not to exceed your plan totals is how to determine how many domains you can effectively host. You cannot oversell your plan though. If your overall plan exceeds its limits then you'll introduce problems for each of your domains. Hope that helps. Lianna Quote
Guest Guest Posted March 21, 2003 Posted March 21, 2003 no, I was wondering about the anticipated ratio of shared plans per server. Quote
Lianna Posted March 21, 2003 Posted March 21, 2003 Oh, sorry. I completely missed that. I don't have the answer to that one. HeadGuru, Spitwad or Tony can probably answer it though.... Lianna Quote
