haejin Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 Hi - I'd appreciate any advice on how I can uninstall MT from my TCH account? I've been having a difficult time finding any instructions on removing it - plenty of info on how to install, but not much on uninstalling it. Here's my situation: - I did NOT install MT into any of my cgi-bin folders. - I have not put anything into my blog yet, so I don't have any files I need to save. - I'd like to start over with a "clean slate". - After uninstalling MT, I will be installing Wordpress. Any advice is appreciated!!! Thank you!! Quote
LisaJill Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 There are a few steps to doing this. These are in no specific order. 1) remove the database that you installed MT to. You can do that from your manage mysql link in cpanel. 2) remove the directory(s) that you installed MT to. This includes wherever you put the cgi files and where you put the mt-static directory. 3) if you want to remove the archives, remove the folders that you had the archives writing to. That is all there is to it. =) Let us know if you need more help, in the meantime - going to move this to the scripting forum for organization. Quote
haejin Posted July 20, 2004 Author Posted July 20, 2004 Thanks TCH-Lisa - I have a folder that I named "mt" in my public_html directory. I can delete that one, but are there other files in other folders that I need to track down? I'm pretty unfamiliar with MT and webhosting, so I don't know if when I did the MT install, if there were additional files installed into other directories (like how Windows programs throw little files into system folders, etc). Thanks!!! Quote
LisaJill Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 haejin - did you ever "rebuild"? If you did - you should look for an archives type directory (you would have entered where that would be in the weblog setup). Otherwise, other than the database, it should not have put files anywhere. If you did rebuild there may be an index.html, archives.html, index.xml, index.rdf and rss.xml in the "base" directory that you set in weblog config. If you did not rebuild than none of that will be there. =) Hope that helps! Quote
arvind Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 Before you go on a delete spree you may just wish to take a backup of the database ! Quote
LisaJill Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 There is nothing in it to backup according to the original post... Quote
haejin Posted July 20, 2004 Author Posted July 20, 2004 Yes, TCH-Lisa's correct.....I don't have anything I need to save, since I haven't put anything into the blog yet. Thanks, T-L for the advice - I'm going to look into the tip re: rebuild you suggested. Thanks again! Quote
LisaJill Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 Oh no no no. Don't rebuild if you're getting rid of it - it'll just create extra files to get rid of. =) If you haven't rebuilt you can just delete the mt directory and database. =) Quote
haejin Posted July 20, 2004 Author Posted July 20, 2004 Hi Lisa - Don't worry, I understood that you meant I needed to look for files created from a rebuild. Anyways, it turns out I did rebuild at one point in time, and I did have the html/xml/rdf files you mentioned. I deleted those, along with the "base" mt folder. I do have a few more files left over that I'm not sure belong to MT, or are TCH "system" files? They are: .htaccess vti_inf.html atom.xml nav_commenters.gif postinfo.html styles-site.css Which of these are part of MT, and which of them should I leave alone as part of my TCH account? Thanks so much, Lisa - you've been an *incredible* help!!!! I looked all over the web for these instructions, and got them less than 5 minutes after I posted here! Quote
LisaJill Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 Ok, the vti_* stuff is for frontpage extensions. If you go into cpanel and uninstall them it'll get rid of those. if you use frontpage extensions, keep them. styles-site.css can go, it's from mt. .htaccess should stay. =) nav_commentors.gif can go. atom.xml can go. postinfo.html I have no idea about, but I don't believe it's an MT file. Not sure what it is! Can open it up and see if you can figure it out? If you rebuild there is probably an archives directory as well - that would have been setup in weblog config. You want to delete the stuff in there too. Happy to help! Quote
haejin Posted July 20, 2004 Author Posted July 20, 2004 Hi Lisa - Thanks so much again for the help! I think I'm all done, and just have to delete the SQL database now. Just FYI - I looked into the postinfo.html file, and found this: The HTML comments in this page contain the configurationinformation that allows users to edit pages in your web using the Microsoft Web Publishing Wizard or programs which use the Microsoft Web Publishing Wizard such as FrontPad using the same username and password they would use if they were authoring with Microsoft FrontPage. Please refer to the Microsoft's Internet SDK for more information on the Web Publishing Wizard APIs. This page is created in the root directory of your FrontPage web when FrontPage is installed. It contains information that allows users to edit pages in your web using the Microsoft Web Publishing Wizard or programs which use the Microsoft Web Publishing Wizard such as FrontPad using the same username and password they would use if they were authoring with Microsoft FrontPage. If you do not want to allow users to edit files on this web using tools other than Microsoft FrontPage, you can delete this file." So, it looks like Frontpage related? Anyways, I'm off to install Wordpress. Thanks!!! Quote
LisaJill Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 Yes it does - it may go away if you uninstall the extensions. Otherwise, if you don't use frontpage, you can probably safely delete it. =) Quote
