taffypaul Posted June 20, 2004 Posted June 20, 2004 I have a domain name (aberkarate.co.uk) registered with easily.co.uk and up till now it's been pointing to a "virtual server" on the easily's own servers. Not having had much luck with their email support (ie. asking specific direct questions but only getting vague answers) I thought that perhaps one of you folks could help me. I've uploaded my website to TCH (http://66.36.229.134/~ubxgufct/) and now want to set my domain name to point to it. Am I likely to need to provide them with any info other than DNS info NS1.TOTALCHOICEHOSTING.COM NS2.TOTALCHOICEHOSTING.COM Their Control Panel vaguely mentions something about ANAME records for domain names - DNS admin option is now available from your domain list, where you can update your ANAME records for each of your domain names. We will provide the DNS management for your domain name, it's what we do best, you simply point your domain name to the IP address of your server. Would I need to enter my TCH IP address address (66.36.229.134)? How would I get it to point to my account (~ubxgufct)? Do I need to mess around with ANAME records at all? I ask because having done a forum search for setting up DNS folks are usually told that entering their NS1+NS2. is sufficient. I'm suspicious that Easily are just over complicating things (ok, maybe it's just me as I've never done this kind of thing before). Further down the same page in the Control Panel it has a place where I can enter DNS info I would like to transfer domain name aberkarate.co.uk to other Name Servers, but wish to keep Easily as the Nominet Tag Holder. I understand that once done and accepted, most further efforts to ensure the name is usable will be the responsibility of the destination host/ISP. The domain name will remain in the Control Panel. Please enter the destination host/ISP's Name Servers below; both name servers must be entered. If you do not know these then please contact the destination host/ISP before proceeding. Name Server 1: [ text entry box ] Name Server 2: [ text entry box ] Is this all I need to do? Sorry if this seems long winded but Easily have confused the hell out of me and their customer service is appaulling. I hope I've found the right home here with TCH. Thanks Paul Quote
TCH-Don Posted June 20, 2004 Posted June 20, 2004 Hi Paul, yes that is all you should need just add the nameservers. But just in case you have to add the Ip address, here they are NS1.TOTALCHOICEHOSTING.COM 64.246.50.105 NS2.TOTALCHOICEHOSTING.COM 65.254.32.122 And Welcome to the Family and your new home! taffypaul Posted June 20, 2004 Author Posted June 20, 2004 Awesomely quick response!!! BRAVO I'll get on with that right away. Many thanks Paul Quote
taffypaul Posted June 20, 2004 Author Posted June 20, 2004 Done it! I simply entered NS1+NS2etc into the fields and that was that. Simple :-) Currently when I type in my domain name my old website is not available and my web forwarding has stopped, I this is normal right? I guess it's just a matter of waiting.... Is there anything else I need to do, such as contact TCH or something? Just for the record I'm STILL waiting for a response from Easily! If I move my domain to another registrar should I expect any downtime? Much thanks for the help I've so far received. Sorry for being such a noob Cheers Paul Quote
TCH-Don Posted June 20, 2004 Posted June 20, 2004 You are all set! But now the hard part. It can take up to 72 hours for all the internet providers around the world to update their name servers to get the new location of your site. As to transfering a domain name, there will be no down time because your provider will have the DNS here. Just be sure that you are the contact (e-mail) for your domain (as you can change the DNS you probably are) and that the domain has finished propagating to all the name servers (72 hours) so if the contact address is at your site, the transfer request authorization from your current registar will get to you ok. Then you respond to their e-mail asking if you want to transfer away from them. And then wait a while, from a few days to weeks depending on them. Hope that helps. Quote
taffypaul Posted June 21, 2004 Author Posted June 21, 2004 Thanks a loads for taking the time and effort to help me. I can access my website through my domain name already (from here anyway) although my test email from an external webmail account hasn't arrived yet but I'm guessing that it's just a matter of time for the dust to settle. Again, thank you very much. Regards Paul Quote
TCH-Andy Posted June 21, 2004 Posted June 21, 2004 Hi Paul, Welcome to the family Propagation usually tales up to 72 hours as Don says. During that time you will sometimes see your new site, and sometimes not - this is normal. It is also normal for the email system to take a little longer to propagate than the http system. Andy Quote

I just moved over to TCH (registrar and hosting) and was a little confused why I no longer have access via my domain name (and yet was able to do all sorts of changes earlier today via my domain name -- added phpBB and phpChat). Now I know I just have a little longer to wait... also explains why my email isn't working yet... I know I'm a still very much a noob here (and to the whole domain hosting stuff -- my previous hosting experience was just web-forwarding & single email), and I know it's been said before, but: Rock Sign Thanks again!
