  1. I have an old site hosted here, the domain name is going to expire this summer, and I'm not going to continue the site. I'm going to cancel my hosting service and remove the files from the host, but I would like the e-mail to remain active until the domain expires. Is it possible to send and receive e-mail even though I don't have a host? Can someone suggest how I can make this work -- that is, if it can work? Thanks, Michael
  2. Thanks, Bruce. That makes sense. Easier than I thought it would be! Cheers, Michael
  3. I don't know how to describe this succinctly, and I can't really google it, so I hope I've come to the right place. I'm trying to find out the difference between using http://sub.domain.com and http://www.domain.com/sub.html. How do you create a page or a section on your web server with the former and are there any benefits to doing so? I've seen this for years and have never understood the syntax. Hope I'm not too vague. Ask and I'll be happy to splain some more. Can anyone shed any light on this for me? Thanks, Michael
  4. I need some advice. I have been using character entities for my special characters (eacute, ccedil, mdash) for a long time. It's easy to remember the characters that way. But recently, I noticed one of my pages displaying very odd characters, not the ones I had coded. It seems that sometime after I had uploaded the page, the characters in the file on the server were replaced by other characters. So I replaced the character entities with numeric entries (#233, #231, #8212), and it seems to have solved the problem. But my question is why this happened at all? Does it have to do with the document's encoding? I haven't ever paid attention to content types before; I always used the default of what the web design program was giving me. So, it's not critical, I'm just trying to understand whether the character entities are really OK to use on the page. Hope this makes sense. I appreciate any help or guidance, Michael
  5. Great! That answered everything. Thank you for that.
  6. Hi, I'm relatively new to TCH, and I love it here. I'm curious, though, about some of the files that I see in my directory. I have a postinfo.html file and a number of _vti_* folders, as well. Can someone tell me what these are? Will I need them for something specific? Can I delete them without causing damage to my sites? I hope this question is in the correct forum. Thanks for any help, Michael
  7. Thanks again! You guys rock!
  8. Thank you both for your quick responses. I think I'll just sign up for another hosting package. They're so reasonable, why not? One question about that, however: how long after I purchase the domain can I set up the hosting package? Do I have to wait for the new domain name to propagate through the Internet before I can host it somewhere? Cheers, Michael
  9. I have an existing domain and account with TCH. I am planning to create a separate domain name for a completely different venture. Because I have tons of free space on my existing account, is it possible to have both domains reside on the same hosting account? I don't want either one of the domains to reference the other. They are completely independent. The new domain will not be parked on the existing domain. Just curious, and I would appreciate any help at all. Thanks, Michael
