  1. Yep, File Manager is the solution. I had played with File Manager before I posted my question, but apparently I never clicked the right places to see the Extract File Contents option. Knowing that File Manager was the right direction, I looked harder, and now of course it's completely obvious. In a quick test, File Manager handled my .tar and .gz files just fine. Thanks for the help! --Rik
  2. Periodically I need to upload several hundred files in a complicated hierarchy. For whatever reason, my FTP connection is not reliable. It's guaranteed to fail if I point to the root of the hierarchy and say "upload this". I can put all the files into an archive, say foo.tar. Then I can upload that and run a little php script to untar it. That works great, except that the php script runs as "nobody", so all of the untar'd files end up being owned by "nobody", not by my normal ftp account. I figure this must be a common problem. What's the solution? How do I upload an archive, unpack it, and have the files be owned by my FTP account? Thanks much, --Rik
  3. Quite sure. I'm linking to them in a bboard, like here, except at http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5101. Yes. Firefox works fine. Netscape displays the file as text. IE warns about security, displays the file as text, and hangs. As I wrote the first time, all these browsers work fine loading .wmv's from other sites. I have problems only from my own. I downloaded and installed a fresh copy of Winamp, now version 5.23, no change in behavior. I also tried disabling my firewall (ZoneAlarm), no change in behavior. In IE, I added www.janrik.net to my Trusted Zone, and then the .wmv's run OK when I just click on the link. No change to Netscape in that case. Any more ideas about what's going wrong? Thanks, --Rik
  4. I uploaded a couple of .wmv files to my site. Using IE and "Save target as", I can download them OK and they play fine. But if I point IE directly at the .wmv, it displays the content as text, complains that "This content might not be displayed properly. The file was restricted because the content doesn't match its security information. Click here for options..." Then the browser hangs -- no more response from that window. Netscape also does something weird. Firefox seems to work OK. All these browsers work OK when I point them at .wmv's on other sites. So, I'm thinking there must be something weird about my site or server configuration. Do you have any idea what the problem is? The url's are http://www.janrik.net/MiscSubj/ClickBeetle.../Microscope.wmv and http://www.janrik.net/MiscSubj/ClickBeetle...llBody_0003.wmv Thanks! --Rik
  5. I also opened a support ticket on this, back in April. The conclusion at that time was that MediaWiki required LaTeX and dvips, that LaTeX at least was not included in TotalChoiceHosting's configuration of their Red Hat Linux servers, and that "At the moment, we don't have plans to install it, of course we'll make a note of it. Being a web host, we can't cater for everyone's needs, but we do cater for the majority of users who require basic web hosting." I never did succeed in getting math support in any wiki or bulletin board at TCH. But I would still very much like to get it, so I am happy to see your interest too. (PS. Norm, check your profile. I tried to reply to your offline email, but it had an "nkrumpe..." address that got rejected as "account expired".)
  6. I did a test install of MediaWiki. Everything seems to work OK, except that I can't get math support to work. I have texvc installed in my testwiki/math, but any attempt to use math mode complains “Failed to parse (PNG conversion failed; check for correct installation of latex, dvips, gs, and convert): a = b/c”. Documentation at http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/wiki.../README?rev=1.5 says "Rasterization is done via LaTeX, dvips, and ImageMagick. These need to be installed and in the PATH: latex, dvips, convert." Does there need to be some more software installed server-side?
  7. Wow, that was quick! Thanks, TCH --- I can take it from here.
  8. You can see an example of the "Edit by" that I'm looking for, at http://www.tawbaware.com/forum2/viewtopic.php?t=759. Scroll down to my posting near the bottom of the page to see a set of them. (I was having a little trouble getting the tags right...) Thanks again!
  9. I just created my first phpbb board at TCH. Works great (nice install!) except one glitch. On other phpbb boards, I see "[Edit by <user> on <date>] " when postings have been edited. But on mine, I don't. Both boards are using subSilver template. What's going on? How do I make the "[Edit by...]" messages appear? Thanks!
