I am trying to upload html and image files, but unless I set the permissions to 777, cpanel tells me I am not authorized to open the folders. So I changed the permissions to 777, uploaded my files, then changed the permissions back to 444. cpanel then changes them to 440 (invisible to the world). I can see the files (i.e. the site works) only with the permissions set to 777 (open to the world for modification), which I don't want to do. Am I wrong to want to set the files to be read by everyone and written by no one? Is there a setting that works?
